Wow, that is something really interesting to discuss next time we interview an oncologist about the therapy. This article is especially interesting to me. Thank you for helping to put this info here, Holly, you rock.
Jen, I know your heart still aches and we are all just so sorry Helga had to.leave her earthly presence.
Having the courage and in the middle of your grief, to share your experience with Helga regarding the Elias vaccine is truly in invaluable. Dog Ticker just passed after going thru the vaccine and Dog Tucker jist passed also. To me, it's quite eye opening the way each dog handled the treatment, what each person was told as far as life expectancy. potential danger (or not) . To me there seem to be a lot ot differences along some of these lines.
Please know Helga's life mattered . Thank you again for the privilege of getting to know her and for sharing her journey with us.
Hugs
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
PS. Helga, hope you don mind me posting this to Jerry on your thread. It's just that your post has been so informative, along with the others I mentioned, ....
JERRY ....Is there a way we could compile a comparison of Helga's experience, Rriley's experience and Tucker's? Do this under one thread in a way that would highlight some of the similarities they were told about the vaccine, the differences each told, the quality experienced during the treatment (or lack thereof), how long each dog lived and any similarities in their passing, etc, etc. This would be a thread where comparisons could be made on what members were told to expect
I know, probably clear as mud.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
After reading through Helga and Riley’s experiences, it does seem that there are quite a few similarities. The seemingly aggressive cancer growth within a short period of time (for Tucker it was weeks after the protocol was finished), the leg paralysis, the GI issues. Tucker, like Helga, had tumors in both his lungs and abdomen. Our best guess is that his leg paralysis was caused from the abdominal tumor pressing on his spine. We didn’t ultrasound his abdomen, because the oncologist thought it would be painful and we’d need to sedate him. We didn’t want to put him through more than he’d already had to endure. She was quite certain that the large “orange sized” mass she felt was a tumor.
I know my original post was quite lengthy, but I’d be happy to distill the pertinent information to a timeline, if that would be helpful.
Tucker fought all of this like the champion he was, as I’m sure Helga and Riley did as well. He'd endured so much in his lifetime - two TPLOs, surgery for a torn meniscus (and plate removal) on one of those legs, severe arthritis, etc. He was in great spirits until the last few days, despite having no use of his remaining back leg and severe diarrhea. I’d do anything to have him back with me, even for a day. Instead, I’ll have to hope that we can help others dealing with this terrible disease.
