The vets rang this afternoon and confirmed that Jack does indeed have Osteosarcoma so we will be making our trips to the oncologist once they are set up. He had his bloods done and his White Blood cell count is good to go. Treatment is to be 5 x Carboplatin as far as I am aware.
I have him on turmeric paste, what are people's opinions about this with Carboplatin, there seems to be various opinions?
What do I need to ensure so he remains comfortable through the next weeks?
Nobody is happy to get an OSA diagnosis confirmed. But even if you didn't have the proof with your own eyes that Jack is happier w/o that bad leg, I'm sure it helps to know for sure you made the right decision.
I can't help w/ the question about the Turmeric. But Ellie, like many other dogs, did fine w/ Carbo. We did see a dip in appetite and a dip in energy but (both about 4 days post, very regular) but she really had no other side effects. We delayed her second round because of low WBC but the onc decreased the dose so we never had the issue a second time. Since Jack is such a star patient, he'll probably sail right through it all! Let him be your guide.
Denise, Bill and Angel Ellie.
Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
I'm sorry about the diagnosis. Dumb cancer. Look out though, here comes Jack and he's gonna kick butt!
From what I've read in the Dog Cancer Survival Guide , turmeric is a good choice but it's ability to be absorbed by the bloodstream when given orally is in question. It is one of many anti-cancer herbs in Dr. Dressler's Apocaps , which is fine to give during chemotherapy. Dressler says that when given to a dog having doxorubicin treatments, there's evidence that it can protect the kidneys from damage. So, it seems like there's a "it can't hurt" but it also can't be proven to be effective when given simultaneously with chemo.
Be sure to let your oncologist know that Jack is currently taking it (along with any other supplements) and get their opinion about it. Most oncologists will want you to stop all supplements until after chemo is over, to reduce the chance of any stomach irritation.

I have a suspicion I will be told to stop everything, the orthopaedic consultant was quite dismissive when I said I had moved him off carbs to help fight the cancer
I'll know more tomorrow I hope
Yeah, that's not too unusual, sad to say. When it comes to holistic care, there are docs who say "go for it", there are docs who say "don't even think about it" and there are docs who say "as long as it does no harm." The trick is to find the one you trust who's willing to work with you on your ideas and plans. Keep us posted.

Even when it's "suspected", it's still a shock.
But it sounds like you are ready to move forward and fight this piece of crap with everything you can!! GOOD!!
Remember, NOTHING has changed in Jack's world. A "diagnosis" doesn't mean squat in Jack's world! Not squat!!
For me...and this is just me.....whether the onco "agrees" with adding a holistic approach or.not, I would do it! Of course, as long as it does no harm! Again, for me, I would rely heavily in the "Dog Cancer Survival Guide "...show the Onco what you intend to use and why. Take the book with you to document yiur choices. If the Onco resist, yeah, time to look for another one!
Let us know how it goes. We're with you and Jack all the way! Keep on rockin. ' Jack! You're doing great!
Hugs!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Interesting about the non-interest in going off carbs....more than one of my vets actually advised me against carbs, so Nitro has been grain-free for some time now. He also had no issues with carboplatin, but I don't know anything about turmeric. Like Sally, I do believe in holistic medicine....we have 2 vets, one that practices Eastern medicine and one regular vet. They compliment each other nicely. Good luck, keep up the good work Jack!
paula and nitro
Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"
"Be good, mama loves you".....run free my beautiful Warrior
Consultation booked for Monday morning, they may (!) do the chemo, really? I think a kick up their backsides will occur if they think they aren't doing it
But then again I asked about what they wanted me to do to prepare him prior to attending and am still waiting for a call back to tell me - hmmmm!
May be asking for a referral to a more specialist centre although they assure me they can do the treatment where we have been referred and have the experience to do this. We will see on Monday but I am reluctant to delay the treatment any longer for fear of it spreading
It is all so very unfair, he looks so happy and healthy I hate that this is only for an unknown period of time
I am so sorry to hear about Jack's diagnosis. We are just three weeks out from diagnosis and amputation - the margins were not "clean". When we went to see the Oncologist last week she explained that right now Anjing has the least amount of cancer in his body so right now we need to start treatment. This really made sense and after going through all of the options we opted for Carboplatin. We just finished our first dose or Carboplatin and here are a few things that we have experienced:
- Decreased appetite -- just when Anjing started eating regularly we had the Chemo treatment on Wednesday. Wednesday was fine, but since then it has been a negotiation to get him to eat. We finally have him eating his regular food once per day as long as there are 2 scrambled eggs or boiled chicken mixed in. To combat the decreased appetite the Oncologist prescribed an anti-nausea medication 2-3 times per day and Pepcid AC twice a day. While I did start the Anti-nausea right away (3x per day) I did not start the Pepcid AC until Saturday, which was a mistake. The Pepcid AC really seemed to do the trick and perked him up. I feel guilty giving him carbs - steamed rice or a slice of toast but when that is the only thing he will eat... his regular dog food is grain free .
- Lethargy - Thursday and Friday were sleepy days -- however we did take 3 short walks each day. Saturday when I finally gave him the pepcid, he was acting more like himself. Sunday we went for a short boat ride and he went with us -- that is one of his favorite things to do. He is sleeping alot but as long as he does his "normal" stuff barking at the UPS man, getting up when we come home, etc. I am happy.
- Elimination -- Pee is fine. Anjing drinks a normal amount of water, since the amp it seems it has gone up slightly. Poop is another story. While he is still on his "schedule" his stool is mostly loose and it seems like he is straining when going #2-- I am going to call Onco tomorrow and see if there is anything we can do for this.
- Supplements -- Prior to Chemo I had him on Enhansa which is a tumeric based supplement (for humans and fur-kids). Since then when he eliminates the color is a tumeric yellow which is strange. This is another question for the Onco. I did discuss K-9 Immunity with her since that seems to be widely recommended here. She said anything to boost immunity would be great. I think the trickiest thing at this point is just getting Anjing to eat and then adding supplements back as that gets more "normal". One interesting this is that prior to all of this he religiously took one Dasuquin MSM each day. Since about a week prior to the surgery he started spitting these out and I have been unable to get him to take one - even if I cut it up and hide it in his food.
Please keep in touch and post your progress. Overall I am extremely impressed with Anjings recovery and I am hoping that the Chemo will give him an extended life. Anjing is growing stronger every day. But in the mean time we are enjoying each day.
Good luck! I wish you the best with Jack.
Hugs,
Jeannie and Anjing
P.S. Wednesday was our consult, after talking with the ONCO we decided to do our first treatment that day and I am glad we did. The only prior that they told us to do was not to give him breakfast but to bring it with us so that the staff could feed him after the blood tests, etc.
Jeannie these are GREAT tips, thank you!
Judith, I know it's sooooo hard but when you think of all you're going through and feel overwhelmed, try to remember that nothing is guaranteed, with or without cancer, we never know how much time we have. So take each day as the gift that is and do your best to focus on the here and now.
If you haven't spoke with a vet oncologist, it could give you greater peace of mind if you at least talked to them before proceeding with your current vet. It sounds like you don't have a lot of confidence in them?

Thank you Jeannie that's given me some info about what I have to do
I think I did print the first list of questions off, I'll go and read the second article too
You are right it is overwhelming trying to sort it out in your head and get the right order of the questions you need answering and not getting head of yourself
None of this is helped by our old girl, Pepper, also being totally unsettled and not sleeping so keeping us awake, Jack however is being a superstar
Oh wow just read the article about who to use
We certainly feel that the referral centre are more 'in it for the money' although I guess they do care but as we aren't a regular patient we have no relationship with them. I would be so much happier to use our own vet but they are not experienced with the carboplatin. I will see how I feel on Monday, fingers crossed the medical person is more sympathetic than the surgeon was.
Glad it helped.Sometimes it's just a matter of one or two more consults before you find the right vet who clicks with you and vice versa. You'll get there.
I hope Monday brings some answers.
