Hey all,
Our puppy oncologist just left us a message today- she went to an oncology conference recently and just found a *significantly* cheaper source for carboplatin!!! We don't know the details, maybe it's gone generic?- but basically a vial that used to be around $550 is now $180. Especially given that I need two vials per treatment, this is a humongous savings! (Particularly helpful as mom was not really sure where she was going to beg, borrow, or steal from to pay for all of my treatments, but started the process figuring she would somehow find a way...).
So... ask your vets! It seemed so difficult that the chemo treatment that seemed the most effective and "benign" was also so much more expensive, but looks like it might be possible that that gap is closing!

Thats great news. Titan has chemo tomorrow so I will ask his oncologist. Have you heard anything else about it. What conference was your vet at?

We just had consult with an oncologist to get prices on chemo. The carboplatin itself for our 134 pound St. Bernard is priced at $116.50.
With all of the other fees and bloodwork her total per session is quoted at $371.00.
This cost is less than we expected.
The carboplatin alone for 62 pound Sophie's first chemo was $1120!! Luckily, we are evidently getting credited part of that cost now that they've found this cheaper version. Maybe the cheaper version already existed in other areas of the country, and is just now coming to New England?
Heidi, I don't know what the conference was, but if when you meet with your vet tomorrow, he/she is not familiar with this, and the price is really high, I can try to find out more. How far is Titan along in the treatment process?

Titan is on carbo and adrio. They alternate the 2 drugs. We have chemo #4 today. We pay between 550-650 each time. That includes bloodwork. Titan is 118 pounds so most of the cost is the drug. Wish us luck. I would just like to get info out there for people who can't afford it or for people to see they can help their dogs if it is cheaper. Ranedrops where do you live? That sounds like a really good price.

As we are all trying to do what is asked of us to treat our pets, we are all trying to conserve costs also. Almost all of the drugs we give our pets (with the exception of most injectables) can be scripted out to you & purchased at a local pharmacy for much less.
For example, Calamity's fentanal patch gets charged to me at the speciality clinic at the rate of $122, I purchased one at CVS for $33. Her Cephalaxin was $32 at the clinic $4 at Wal-Mart. Wal Mart has a lot of the antibiotics your pet may receive for the $4 price.
I do not advocate changing anything your vet prescribes, just be aware that there are places to cut the cost without cutting the care.
I know this has very little to do with this carboplatin thread, but it is mostly making you aware of a price cut on one drug and I want you to be aware you can cut costs in other places too. My husband & I have spend around $8500 on Calamity this year, we would have spend MUCH more if I hadn't cut the costs somehow. She still has received the cadillac of care she deserved.

I live in central NJ. The oncologist we saw who quoted us that price is located in Toms River, NJ. That practice will also match the price from internet companies on prescription meds.
Our oncologist told us the same thing (we're in Boston), so we can now afford to do the chemo. What a relief that was! Hope things go well for you and your dog!

Another way you can save money is if you have a AAA membership. We cut the cost of the Tramadol by half at our CVS, and there are many other drugs for which that is true.

We're in Boston too (in JP)! Any chance your oncologist is at Angell? Sophie is almost a month post surgery and 2 weeks post first carboplatin; where is your dog in the process? What's your dog's name? We are wishing you guys all the best too!
