Hi all!
Long time, no talk! Our local newspaper recently put out a call for pet owners who have incorporated CBD into their pets diet. We have been using it for Aspen since his amp., so I got in touch with the journalist. They came out and interviewed us, took photos, even video. We somehow became the focus of the article! I know a lot of people have asked about CBD usage in this group, so I wanted to share it all with you: https://www.sum.....kes-shape/

We do live in the great state of Colorado, where we have access to high-quality products, but I encourage everyone to do their own research. If anyone has any questions, we are happy to answer with what we know and have witnessed.

And now, for the REALLY cool news: 15 months after his Osteosarcoma diagnosis and amputation, Aspen has been deemed cancer-free! Recent x-rays show an all-clear in his lungs and his other front leg.
He is a champ and we feel so luck to have all of this "extra" time with him. 🙂

Bravo Lauren and Aspen, what a great article! And a big congrats to you both on many, many hoppy days together and many ahead too.

I especially appreciated how the article covered a totally unbiased look at CBD for pets, with all the pros and cons. Great reporting is always nice to see since it so rarely happens these days. How wonderful you and Aspen were the spotlight of such a well-written piece.

We hope that it helps Sammy feel better too!

Lauren and Aspen and Sammy! That is a truly fantastic and uplifting article! 15 Ampuversary’s... Absolutely Brilliant!!!clap

I do have some questions for you and I would certainly appreciate your opinions on them.

First off, just as a bit of info upfront... I am currently trying out a CBD oil on my senior cat who is 19 years young and he had been suffering greatly with pain and bladder malfunctions blush! We live in Beautiful British Columbia and we have an excellent dispensary somewhat close to us, that makes the CBD oil themselves and sends each batch out for analysis. They gaurantee that there is no THC in this particular oil. We are still in the trial period with him, as he has only been on it for about one month, but the improvements are incredible! I can honestly say that we have improved his quality of life considerably!

Stewie had his leg amputated in July of 2017 due to Osteosarcoma. We treated him with 6 rounds of Carboplatin. We are going to be starting Stewie on the CBD oil in another couple of weeks, his own batch. The other reason we are holding off, is because we are trying to gain information to the minute amount of THC that we are hearing is beneficial in the breaking down of the cancer cells. I see in your article, it mentions an ‘innactive’ THC component, how does that differ from the ‘active’ THC ingredient and how is it made differently?

And so if I may go ahead and ask my other questions that I am putting out there at my next meeting with our dispensary folks...

  • What is the safe amount (as in % wise) Of THC to have in a Dogs CBD oil? Does it have to be this ‘inactive’ ingredient and how does one achieve this?
  • Can a dog or cat for that matter, fatally overdose on CBD oil alone?
  • Should CBD oil alone be given as a preventative medicine?
  • I have conflicting information as to whether a minute amount of THC should be added to dogs living with Cancer. I have also heard that equal amounts of CBD and THC are important in working together as a team so to speak. At least for humans. And I have also heard that dogs shouldn’t receive THC of any sort. I have read that the THC attacks the cancer cells and breaks them down and the CBD is a cancer cell inhibitor, as well as a pain reliever. I have heard, I have heard and I have heard..... oh so much and yet so little information out there! What are your thoughts on all of this?
  • I am off to the dispensary on May 8th and was wondering if there were any more pertinent questions that you think I should ask them?

Thank you so very much for allowing me to put these questions out there and I totally understand that these would be you experiences and opinions and I would love to hear them!

Wishing you many more Ampuversary’s Aspen and May you keep that arthritis pain at bay Sammy!

Congrats Aspen on the 15 month ampuversary and also the all clear on the dreaded disease.

This was a very interesting article.  I thought about getting CBD oil and using it for Bosch's arthritis but not even sure where to start.  I don't want to do something that would hurt him more than help.  For a 12 year old Rottie he does awesome

Studies are ongoing  but nobody really knows what a safe dose of THC is for dogs and cats and there is also individual variation in sensitivity to THC.  Right now I agree to use CBD without THC and make sure the product is tested for impurities as well as for active metabolites (or actual amounts of CBDs present).  There are many sham companies out there and no regulation so buyer beware!  If one product is much cheaper than others there is probably a reason for it.

I have just added to my list of questions Dr Pam, thank you! What I like about my particular dispensary that I have found, is that they make their own product and then send it out for individual batch testing. Apparently they can tell me everything that they do and don’t have in their product. I will be sure to ask again!

i haven’t started Stewie on any product yet, but we have started Spikey on CBD oil for his arthritis pain, which we have been informed is THC free. i have updated on how Stewie and Spikey are doing in his forum...

Stewie is having a few off daze...   (post #108)

Thanks Jerry’s Pack! These are great pieces of information to keep at the forefront of one’s research! I am going to copy them over. Thank you!

I can not reiterate enough when I say that I am trying out CBD product on Spike and soon to be Stewie, under complete trial and hopefully minimal error! We are going super slow and are maintaining what we are giving Spike at this time, as it seems to be working super well for him.

Congrats Lauren & Aspen and thank you for posting that.

I had heard about CBD to keep dogs calm but not pain relief.  Tai has been exhibiting pain symptoms (she is on two medications already) and I'll look more into CBD for pain.

Great photos by the way smiley

Hi All!

I am sorry for the slow reply - It's been a busy week. 🙂
Thank you for all of your kind words and thoughtful questions! I'll do my best to give some answers.

We give Aspen a CBD tincture that also contains Inactive THC (THCa), so he does not get the psychoactive effects of the marijuana. His personality does not change, nor does his motor function, etc. This is the product we give to Aspen: Sweet Mary Jane Creature Comfort It is formulated for pets and is only available at a dispensary. 1 Bottle lasts us about a month. I was recently talking to a friend that manages a pet store about the CBD (only) options and she said that she's tried them all and she only sees an improvement in her dog's arthritis with the CBD that contains THCa. That said - everyone's chemistry is so different, so it's worth checking out all the options. I'll be honest, I don't think I'm noticing a difference for Sammy's arthritis with the CBD (only) tinctures, although we are still working up to the suggested dosage. But she's a crazy pup and it takes a lot to hold her back.

Is THC bad for dogs? I would not give a pet the human-formulated items, but Aspen has shown no side effects or ill effects from the stuff we give him. If anything, it has helped him. In the research we found, the THC is what is (possibly?) fighting cancer cells. Finding clean products (not pesticides, etc) that are regulated and tested is the key.

Petra - I think you have some great questions and I'd love to hear what the folks at the dispensary have to say! Here is some scientific info on TCHa vs THC
I'm so glad that your kitty is doing so well on the CBD!

Michelle - Where do you live? Lots of pet stores are now carrying CBD oils - they do not need to be purchased from dispensaries. You can Check out Canna Pet and Pet-Releaf online which are 2 of the bigger and solid brands

Thanks again, everyone. Do keep us posted if/when you start your fur-kids on a CBD regimen!

Thank you so much Lauren! This information is most helpful! I now have e more questions to add to my growing list! I’m glad I booked an appointment!! I will definitely be taking in this article with me, as well as a couple of others.

I will definitely tell you what they have to say and hopefully everything can start jiving for Stewie! Spikey is continuing to do well. We have found and are maintaining a comfortable dose for him. Thankfully with minimal error! I hope Sammy can start to feel some benefits soon, but as I have been told by many people, this kind of therapy is not for everypawdy right!

Stay strong Aspen, you are a role model for Stewie!

Thanks again Lauren, I look forward to updating you.

And now for a public service announcement to reiterate that we strongly urge anyone considering CBD for their pets to please please please find a veterinarian willing to work with you on it.

Buying a product from a dispensary without a veterinarian to guide us is akin to experimenting on our pets, who rely on us to protect them from harm and adverse side effects. The cannabis / CBD industry is like the wild west right now and the only people we can rely on to give us the straight truth are veterinary professionals.

And now back to regular programming 😉

Always good to ask, Jerry - for sure! However, it is my understanding that Vets can't suggest or really work with you to find the correct CBD+THCa supplement/dosage since it is a controllers substance and outside of their professional purview. That said, we did talk to our vet before we started Aspen on the tinctures and our vet said that it will not interfere with his other medications and should not harm him in anyway. They encouraged us to go for it if we thought it was in Aspen's best interest. I think there's always an element of experimentation when providing supplements or drugs to our pets since they can't directly communicate with us and we really just have to go with our gut, and watch to make sure the animal is responding the way we want them to.

Edited to add: I also think that we need to make a designation, here, between the CBD oil (i.e. hemp oil) that is widely available and is a natural product, and the controlled CBD+THCa substances that are available only at dispensaries. I also highly agree with the comment above: "You get what you pay for."

Just my $.02.

Lauren you raise a lot of good points, and this is a great discussion! I'll share my thoughts, take them for whatever they're worth.

it is my understanding that Vets can't suggest or really work with you to find the correct CBD+THCa supplement/dosage since it is a controllers substance and outside of their professional purview.

Yes, and no. We have talked to vets at the most recent Western Vet Conference, who understand that this is a hugely hot topic / request with pet parents (every one of the 4 scientific sessions about cannabis for pets was standing room only this year). Thus,  despite the current regulations, many vets are finding ways to approach the subject without getting into trouble with authorities. The vet community is facing this head-on, so it's becoming less difficult to find a holistic-minded vet who's willing to go out on a limb, like Dr. Richter in the video or Dr. Judy Morgan (who does phone consulting).

I think there's always an element of experimentation when providing supplements or drugs to our pets since they can't directly communicate with us and we really just have to go with our gut, and watch to make sure the animal is responding the way we want them to.

Totally, to a point. The best way to know what we are looking for (bad and good reactions) is to work with a vet who can guide us.

You are correct, hemp oil products are legal "over the counter" remedies, CBD/THC ones are only sold via dispensaries.

This is such an important discussion for all of us to have, I'm glad you brought it up. Thanks!

Regarding CBD oil it should not be an issue for your vet to give you some help but I would say when you are researching a product make sure you can find how many mg of CBD (active product) per ml or drop.  That is how I will determine how much to give.  I always recommend just a few brands that I have researched so I do not know every product out there! There is a wide range of suggested doses depending on what condition you are treating and severity of the problem.
