So today I was snuggling with Chili, and I noticed that he had a spot on his elbow that was missing hair. It has the "feel" of a callous to me, and I watched him closely today and noticed that it's in the spot where he pushes himself up off the ground now that he is a tripawd. There is a small part of me, though, that wonders if maybe it is a sore spot? He hasn't been licking the area, like he tends to when he has an irritation. Thoughts? Thanks!

Chili Dawg crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 8/30/2011 & is now pain free. He was my heart dog, and I miss him every day.
Larger dogs can develop hygromas on those remaining elbows. Charon shared her plans for making Gayle's elbow pads in the Tripawds Downloads blogs. DogLeggs also makes elbow pad protection for dogs. These may help break the cycle if Chili has one growing.

yup- admin is right, Cooper developed one of those when he had first lost his leg, it was actually an open wound then, if it feels like a callous to you it is probably already toughened up. Coops hair never grew back there - and you are right it is where they push themselves up and move around. It is doubtful it is sore anymore if it feels tough.

the monkeydogs only THINK they have invaded the tripawd state
Maggie has one elbow that is bald...the non-amp side as that is the side she typically lays on. It hasn't progressed to anything further but is a tad worse the summer, I assume from laying on harder surfaces outside. I do have the DogLeggs that Admin is referring to and it does help as once it got opened up a bit and scabby.

Dante has two callous like spots on his remaining leg in the front. They don't seem to bother him, and we for the life of us can't get the goober to sleep on a bed/blanket to help prevent them - he either eats it, or piles it up and sleeps beside it. Hopefully once they no longer need to be crated everytime we leave the house and at night, they'll go away. For now, I guess we just keep an eye on them!

Consider making your own dog elbow protector pads if you want to give them a try first without the expense.

We did not get the dogglegs. It hasn't changed but when we took chili dawg in for the hematoma in his ear we had the vet look at it. He said something similar to what Coopsdad did above. We check it on it though. I don't think he will ever grow hair there again though.

Here is a post from Elgin, a large Dogue de Bordeaux who successfully fought off his hygroma with a laser therapy treatment at his vet's office: "Watch those Callouses"
