I am writing this to let you know that Brody was five weeks post amp and had his first chemo treatment today. I had written in on greyt girl's topic that we were researching the best chemo because of the fear of cisplatin, which I originally wanted for Brody due to its amazing results. My sister-in-law, the vet, got in touch with Phil Bergman, the top oncologist from the AMC), and he recommended caboplatin. So that is what we went for. Our oncologist recommended four treatments, three weeks apart with blood work every week (I think this is pretty standard).
I dropped Brody at the clinic this morning around 9:00 a.m., thinking that he would get his treatment around 10:00 a.m. They asked that I not feed him, which was hard as he wakes up at 4:30 a.m. rooing for his food. I gave him a taste of chicken, did the same for his sister, and I guess it tricked them into thinking they had eaten. I expected to pick him up before noon but got a call that they had had so many emergencies that he did not get his treatment until 2:30 p.m., which meant I could not pick him up until 3:30 p.m. When I got there, the staff were tired of his rooing so were letting him run up and down the hallway. After we left the clinic and Brody relieved himself outside, he actually wanted to go back inside instead of going home. The person who wrote that the dogs think of the vet's as doggie day care isn't wrong. Brody was only allowed to eat half of his regular dinner (more chicken, brown rice, etc.) and has been sleeping on and off since then (pretty normal behavior for greyhounds). Apparently the nausea can hit any time now and up to four days post treatment, but we are hoping that he sails through this first one. Brody's mom, Pat
Awww! I want to hear him roo! Sounds adorable (but probably because I'm not the one waking up at 4:30 listening to it, hehe). We started chemo this past week as well. Jack is on Adriamycin and is symptom-free so far as well. Our oncologist gave him nausea medication and told us that we could give it to him even if he's not showing any signs, just as a sort of precaution. Keep up the awesome attitude, Brody!

Way to go Brody and Jack! Emily had her first chemo three weeks ago. No side effects at the time but he white blood cell count is low so she had to skip her second chemo Isn't it surprising how much they like going to the vet?! Emily doesn't even look back! Good luck with the treatment.
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
Thank you as always for your support. Glad to hear that Jack and Toffee are doing well and hope that Emily's blood count gets better. We are now in the a day after chemo and still no adverse effects. Brody's appetite is better than ever and he even got some cottage cheese for a snack although I can hear his tummy now and hope it is from drinking so much water after our walk (hop). It is so hot in Elk Grove, CA today that he and his sister did not get to go on a long walk this morning but they really wanted to stay outside tonight. Pat
Way to go, Brody. You teach that chemo who's boss. It is just awesome that most of them make it through with minimum side effects. If only the human victims of this disease could be so lucky.

Cheering for Brody and sincerely hope that the chemo will not get him down. Cherry's chemo started just hours after her amputation, and while she never really suffered nausea, her appetite totally vanished until the chemo was over. We are hoping that Brody will continue to respond to the chemotherapy so well.
We just passed through the Sacramento/Elk Grove area on our return from Yellowstone Sunday, and can totally relate to the heat you mention. Just have to make the outdoor activities very early or very late in the day.
Wishing the best, and looking forward to hear of Brody's progress.
