Hi,  I am new to this site.  Our greyhound boy, Brody, had his right front leg broken (splintered) last year when the gardener left the drain pipe off and Brody's foot went down into the pipe.  He had the plates and pins, started limping, went on Metacam and was finally diagnosed with bone cancer last Friday.  He had his leg amputated that day as the remaining bone was so fragile.

After his other operations he had been able to come home the next day.  However, on Saturday they noticed blood pooling by his genitals.  Supposedly this is from some of the small capillaries bleeding.  He is still at the hospital.  He looked good on Saturday and even stood and ate some food.  Yesterday he didn't get up and was crying all day.  They have moved him into ICU and take his blood every four hours to monitor coagulation and his blood count.

Has anybody else had this complication?  I think that greyhounds might be more susceptible to this bleeding. Brody is such a sweet boy; I hate to see him in pain again.  Thanks, Pat

Greyhounds are more susceptible to bleeding disorders so it is good that they moved him to the ICU.  Some dogs need a tranfusion of packed platelets or clotting factors, depending on what his counts are.

Thanks for joining the discussion Sarah, and best wishes for you and Brody. I'm glad Pam was able to answer this one since she's a vet. Sounds like Brody is in good hands. Keep us posted on his progress. The waiting is the hardest part.

I am back to the hospital.  They are going to start plasma as Brody's condition has become worse.  He now has vasculitis.  His prognosis is guarded and we will know within 24 hours if he will make it.

That's the first we've heard of Vasculitis. Thank you for the update and best wishes for Brody to pull through with flying colors.

Hi Pat -- Jack had this complication after surgery...he was supposed to come home the same day as his surgery (which I thought was a bit crazy but my vet thinks dogs recover better at home and she was just a phone call away) but she didn't like his blood levels as the day progressed.  He was up and about after surgery but had a lot of "oozing".  She wanted to continue monitoring his blood levels through the night so she could give him blood if needed...well, I called to check in at about 2:30 a.m. and he needed the blood.... he slowly perked up as the hours progressed and the blood got itself going -- he was a brand new boy about 6 hours later!  When I went to pick him up he ran out into the lobby to greet me, full of smiles!  I couldn't believe it...

Try to hang tight and give his body time to do what it needs to do....

Thanks Jacksmom.  After switching his antibiotics and getting a transfusion, Brody is better today; his condition is not so "guarded".  He has even eaten some food.  His skin in no longer leaking.  He will get another transfusion and then massages and laser treatment from the physical therapist.  Seems so weird that we were so concerned about the surgery site, and that is the only normal thing right now.

We have some information that Brody's Mom sent to us. This is a PDF document about Postoperative bleeding in retired racing greyhounds.

We also found some good information about Osteosarcoma in Greyhounds.
