Good morning, everyone!  It's been a while so I hope everyone is doing well.

Back in July, I joined you all because my Great Pyrenees, Appa, had his rear leg removed due to Osteosarcoma.  We completed our chemo in October and a clear 1 month check.  Just last week we had our 4 month check up and good news! They still see clear Xrays.  (I was a nervous wreck for weeks all for good news.  I felt so silly.)

After we left, the clinic called and I spoke with our vet.  She had mentioned that they were starting to see signs of arthritis (which I expected in a 8 year old Pyre) but she had another motive for wanting to start him on a Non-Steriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID).  Recent studies have shown positive results for animals with cancer for slowly the spread and could possibly stop the thread of the cancer in animals with the assistance of NSAIDs.  She asked if we would be willing to try giving Appa a specific type of NSAID and assiting with that study.  Either way, the low-dose NSAID would help his arthritis so I was all for it.  After an awkward trip to the human pharmacy to pick up meds for my dog, he's got spring in his hops again.  Leading to my boyfriend's unfortunate nickname for him of "Hoppa".

So far, we have had no side effects and he's happy.  I was wondering if anyone else had tried this or even heard of these studies.  If so, have you seen positive results?  Negative?  I would love to hear thoughts or concerns you all may have.

Its wonderful to hear Appa is doing so well! YAAAAAAAAAY FOR APPA!!!!!!!!!!! "Hoppa" Appa is showing big dogs with a little "maturity" on them how to rock with three legs!!clap

What is the specific drug he is taking?

Another place you may want to post this is "Ask A Vet" and see if she has heard of this. She is very knowledgeable and up to date when it comes to this rotten disease.

Regardless, it sounds very promising AND is helping with the arthritisclap

Looking forward to more great updates AND pictures!!!

Hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Wow that is fabulous news both for the all-clear update and the study Appa will be in!

Yes, NSAIDs have been used in Metronomic Chemotherapy for many years. Researchers have found that NSAIDs contain anti-tumor properties so this anti-inflammatory has always been given alongside a chemo drug like cytoxin or leukeran.

What is the NSAID Appa will be getting? And any more details about the study? We'd love to hear more.

YAY APPA!!!!

Great news !  Well done, Appa!  I would also like to know what NSAID Appa is on, so I can give this info to Johnnie's oncologist here in Brazil.

hugs from Daniela &  Johnnie and keep on hopping.

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.
