Jake, my second dog with osteo, was scheduled for his rear leg amputation this morning. However, just prior to surgery, they discovered mets to the lungs. Amputation was determined to be not the best course of action, and now I am at a loss. We have consults with oncology and at a bracing specialist to see if supporting his leg will help prevent a pathological fracture. He can't bear weight on his leg at all today. 6 days ago he had ZERO symptoms.

Any advice? Has anyone ever braced? I am so scared he will fracture his leg and be in pain. My second dog, Ringo, had an amp and also has lung mets. I pray they both can go together when the time is right, but I don't know what to expect with a leg that has osteo and can't be amputated. Thanks. 😰

Soooo...I am really sorry, this is just so heartbreaking. What a shock after deciding to amputate.

Did they say anything about bisphosphonates or radiation therapy? How bad are the mets?

Shaking my head in total disbelief.  Just gutted to hear what's  going on with Jake while you are dealing with Ringo' s  challenges at the same time.  So bleeping sorry.

Yes, do check into braces  and, as Jerry suggested,  bisphosonates.  If you have access to a Rehab Specialist, maybe chat with them about braces also.  Ask avput acupuncture  also as a way to manage the pain.  Check into CBD also.

While fractures do happen, and sometimes out of the blue with NO limping showing up at all first.  And many, actually most dogs who have been limping off and on for months because of misdiagnosis (treating for arthritis, treating for sprain, etc), never have a fracture  before the diagnosis is figured out correctly.

As far as the mets, clearly he has no symptoms from tjpse, so that's good.  I think if you can figure out how to get the limp managed so it's  not roo painful, you should have some good quality  time  moving forward.

One more suggestion, if you have access to a Sports Doctor  Veterinarian , possible they would have suggesrions.

Every single one of us are putting forth as much pawsitive energy this community has to offer to help Ringo and Jake continue on woth good quality  life❤

Love  and hugs
