Hi Guys!

Soooo Chloe will be moving in with me next Saturday! YAY!!! I have been looking for a dog house to put outside for her and was wondering what are good/bad styles for rear leg amputee?  This semester I only have to leave her out there 2 days a week because I am in class all day those days.

I went to petsmart and saw that they had 2 types of dogloos and things that look like giant traveling dog crates (see pictures below).

They all have a "lip" which concerns me since Chloe is kind of a klutz and she will probably trip over it if the opening isn't big enough for her.   I do understand that it is for water and such not to flow into the house….  And no I do not know her "height" because my parents are on travel (my brother is taking care of her), but I can try to get that information when my dad gets back tomorrow if that will help.  I did gravitate toward the large igloo, (picture #1) because the opening looked tall enough for her to hop over the lip easily.  However, I just read reviews that it leaks all the time.  The Petmate Indigo dogloo (picture #2) had much better reviews regarding the weather, however the Amazon version of that in XL is $200…

Because I am a grad student and cannot afford an expensive dog house (full time student, no job), my options are limited.  My parents have already helped purchase lots of other things for her (including her amputation), so I do not want to ask them to add to her costs by buying her an expensive dog house… but at the same time I don't want to waste my money on something so cheap that she will be miserable if it rains.  So any suggestions regarding dog house type and where to purchase? I have been looking in stores and online, but I am now more confused than ever. Any input would be great thanks!!

PS. To see what my gift card and what my parent's money helped buy for Chloe see my recent blog post: Tripawd Chloe Blog

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog

I'm so happy that Chloe will be with you soon! I have a suggestion, look in your local paper under "handyman" and see if you can get in touch with someone that can build you a doghouse.  That way, you can build it to your own specifications (small "lip" higher enterance, etc). Also, of they already do carpentry work, they may have scrap material around which can decrease the cost.  I've always been a big fan of bartering, so you might even trade a days worth of house cleaning, or a weekend of pet sitting for a Chloe house. Good luck, I'm looking forward to hearing about the big homecoming!

Hugs and sloppy Sadie kisses,

Lisa & Sadie

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.
