Everyone recommends using a t-shirt to cover up the incision site to prevent licking by front-leg amputees, right? But our rear-legger amputee friends have always seemed to be in need of a better idea.
Today I saw this photo on the canine rehab website, Two Hands Four Paws. I think that a t-shirt setup like this might just work for rear-legged amputees just out of surgery. You could stitch up the arm on the side that isn't being used. Not very fashionable, but definitely functional!
If you try it, let us know if it works OK?

So, I guess you'd have to remove the T-shirt everytime they had to go pee and poop, right?! Well, at least it's covering the incision... Haven't seen any better ideas yet!
Angel Jake's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Didn't work for me when I tried to do the same with Gerry. Didn't stay and didn't seem worth the effort since it would have to come off every time he went out (and it was hard enough to get on). Plus he was already licking his incision around the e-collar, and if he were to keep licking with the the shirt on that wouldn't be any better. A longer e-collar was the way to go for us!
Until we could get a longer e-collar though, it sort of worked to roll up a t-shirt, tie it securely (but not too tight) around the base of his neck, so that when I put the e-collar back on, it would stay higher on his neck and not slip down so far. Seemed to work okay in a pinch.
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the potty thing! Duuuuuhhhh...
So you tried the exact same setup with Gerry eh? Bummer! I was hoping this might be an option. Well someone out there needs to craft a post-amp rear-legger jumpsuit with a fly, don't you think?

Absolutely.
And I forgot to say earlier that that white doberman is beautiful!
