the Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) has launched a Canine Lifetime Health Project, focusing on identifying the genetic, nutritional and environmental risk factors for cancer and other diseases in Golden Retrievers.  Projected to last 10 to 14 years anf enroll up to 3,000 dogs, the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study will be the largest and longest observational study ever undertaken to improve the health of dogs.

the study is expected to provide valuable information for identifying prevention strategies, methods for early diagnosis and new treatments for cancer and other diseases.

This spring MAF will begin actively recruiting Golden Retriever owners who are older that 18 years and live in the contiguous US.  Dogs must be healthy, under Two (2) years old at the time of enrollment and have a three-generation pedigree.

Golden Retrievers were chosen because more than half of them die of cancer (CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT STATISTIC?????).  although the study involves only Golden Retrievers, the information collected will improve the heal of all dog breeds.

so, tripawd folks - so many of you are golden people, and many of you have young pups that might meet the study requirements... wouldn't be great to be part of something that can help us all kick cancer's butt?

I am so glad they are doing a study on Golden Retrievers.  I have 3 of these wonderful dogs.  Boomer as you know my tripawd, he is 7, Sunshine who also has had a tumor on her front paw, she is 8 and Sammy who is 6 and knock on wood tumor free so far.  It is bizarre because Boomer and Sunshine are both fixed.  Sammy on the other hand is still intact.  It will be very interesting to see what the results are in 10-14 years.  Here is to hope not just for Golden Retrievers but for all of the wonderful furry kids out there.

Goldens are actually #1 on the breed list when it comes to cancer frown   I will certainly contact them and see if our new pup Tom can enroll.  We actually selected Tom's breeder because they have impressively low cancer rates.  Several of us who lost our Goldens recently are getting new golden pups in the near future (Wrigley pops to mind), so the monkeydogs might be well represented in the study.

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011

Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011.  Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs.  If love alone could have saved you…

We will definitely enroll Wrigley (who was born this weekend!!!!!) in the program if they will have him. The stats for golden retrievers, specifically, and all dogs, in general, are eyebrow-raising. We've spent many hours wondering what we might have to prevent cancer and many more wondering what we might have done to cause it.  We would be honored to be part of a study that might come up with some answers.

Thanks for letting us know about this opportunity, Charon. It would somehow seem like some good came out of our terrible losses if Tom, Wrigley and some other monkeydogs help save our furkids of the future.

Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.

We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.

My Golden is over 2 -bummer.  I would have loved to participate.  I almost think the cancer % would be higher.  It seems almost rare to see geriatric Goldens nowadays.

On behalf of my Goldens who are too ancient or too un-pedigreed (whoever heard of a black golden, Zephyr!!!) to sign up, we thank you!!! Hopefully there will be some strides made in cutting down on the incidence of cancer within this and other dog breeds.

Great post, Charon.

When we did the Morris walk last year they said 25% of dogs will die of cancer, but I think they said 62% of Goldens will. (I know it was over 60%.) We've had two goldens in our family and lost both to cancer. I don't understand why goldens get hit so hard - they are the sweetest dogs ever.

This sounds like a great study - which will help all pups.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. That's terrific!  We should really push to get everyone in our community of  new golden pups on board!

Beth-- congratulations on Wrigley's birth-- is it too soon to share pictures?  I can't wait to see him and his adorable litter mates.  I enrolled Tom on the Morris Foundation website and they said they'll contact me if Tom qualifies for the study.  After losing Scout, we decided to include "No Regrets" in Tom's fancy name-- we want to have no regrets this time around,  and if Tom could participate in this study, we would be so very pleased.
