Just wanted to let you know that if you have an ex-racing greyhound with osteosarcoma and live close to Ohio, you might be able to get free chemo.
Dr Guillermo Couto is running a Greyhound Health and Wellness Program at OSU, with a special interest in osteosarcoma in racing greyhounds. Research and studies are being done to try to determine what the predisposing and contributing factors are, and why the incidence of this cancer is so very high in these dogs. In order to see as many cases as possible, he is currently offering free chemo for qualifying dogs. He is a really nice guy too, and he and his team will happily answer questions via email, and even do email consults using digital x-rays which your vet can send him with a case history.
The program consists of:
- Free consultation for Greyhound owners and veterinarians
- A website with current Greyhound health information
- A list-serv for Veterinarians for Retired Racers, and an annual scientific conference on this area
- Educational programs for Greyhound owners and veterinarians
- Free chemotherapy for retired racers with cancer
-
- If you are interested, please email them at greyosu@osu.edu
Thank you for posting this valuable information! We'll be sure to include it on Jerry's Resources page in his blog too.

I don't personally know Dr. Couto but can vouch for OSU. Emily had her amputation and chemo there. She could not have had better care. Some of you may remember that when we had to let Emily go they made us plaster casts of her pawprints and how much that meant to me. Everyone there treated Emily like the princess she knew herself to be. No wonder she thought the universe revolved around her! I would recommend OSU to anyone.
Debra
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
And Dr. Cuoto is also the person including Artemisinin in the treatment program he runs for greyhounds, so hopefully he will obtain good data on that as a form of treatment.
