I would be concerned about flying a dog cargo out of ABQ in the summer. Some airlines probably won't even do it. Its is unbearably hot and might even be dangerously so.

Beth with my beloved Tshuvah, 10 year old "TaosDog". Provisional diagnosis osteosarcoma on 6/10/10, amputation of left foreleg same day, firm diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma 6/24/10. Set free on 9/9/10. Treasured forever.

We had looked into flying my brother's dog to him when he lived in Vancouver, BC. I believe the temperature had to be below 85 degrees. [He ended up driving from Vancouver one day, and driving back the next day (it's like a 20+hr drive each way).]
I have heard Continental heats/cools their cargo area, & doesn't have a temp restriction.
I've also been told that some airlines restrict the breed of dogs that can fly.
So, the 85 degree maximum temp is the only thing I have direct experience with. The other things (Continental & breed restrictions) are just things I have heard other people say, and I don't know if they are actually true or not.
Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.
Dawn, I was just re-reading this thread and saw the recent message about maybe getting an ultrasound depending on how Baggins' xray looks. I didn't think Salazar Vet had an ultrasound, or the expertise to perform it. My dearly beloved and greatly missed lab, Yesha, had an ultrasound at Salazar about a year ago, but that was with a vet who came in from Los Alamos once or twice a month and set up shop at Salazar Vet. Shortly before he died I had to take Yesha to ABQ for another ultrasound. I know they do them at the specialty center in Santa Fe now, too. So just FYI in terms of your planning, particularly since Santa Fe is a 3 hour round-trip and ABQ, as you now know, is 5 hours. Taos is great in a lot of ways, but being so remote has some huge drawbacks...like these.

... I think I would call it the Cannonpaw Run!!!
Now that's a good one! And appropriate considering the turn around trips some of us are making. If all goes as planned, here's how it will go...
- Shelter to deliver Baggins to CO Springs (Thursday)
- Mary Malone to get him to Fort Collins (Friday)
- Jim to Drive him to Salt Lake City, UT
- Jennifer Bunker to take him to Elko, NV (Saturday)
- Dawn to bring Baggins HOME!

Best Friends’ partner Pet Airways, America’s first and only airline dedicated to pets, called up recently with a piece of interesting news. They had some room on a cross-country flight in a couple weeks and wondered if any of the animals at Best Friends could use a lift? At that point, all kinds of exciting possibilities started flying around.

Wow, thanks for the link. I will check on it right now. I called http://www.flypets.com and thought it was Pet Airways. I had heard about it on the news a while back and googled it and got Fly Pets instead and they quoted me $399.
Thanks!

Rottie Raven, osteosarcoma at 8-1/2 years old, amputation in October '09 and in February '10 due to liver mets he went back to heaven where he came from. raven.tripawds.com
Now I have Miles, rottie mix amputee from a shelter and traveled 1500 miles to find his way here through the Rescue Railroad thanks to tripawds.com. miles.tripawds.com
$299 from Denver to LA. And I'd still have to drive to LA to get him ($150 or so) and still need to get him to Denver. I think we'll stick with the plan of the Cannonpaw Run for now. But THANK YOU for the link, I will keep that one for future referal for sure.
We are still in a bind with getting Baggins (may need to get another name, open for suggestions, the shelter gave him that one) from Taos shelter to Sante Fe to link up with the first leg, which is a Bassett Rescue driving from ABQ to Colorado Springs Thursday morning. Beth has a friend that will do it, but he'll have to miss work! So, she has offered to pay for fuel to someone at the shelter, or vet, or anyone there to take him to his ride (3 hour round trip). Thanks Beth!! I also have a pilot in ABQ that may be able to find someone, or worse case scenario, fly him up if he misses his connection with the Bassett folks.
Still working on this!

Dawn, I'll drop an email to the folks at the Santa Fe Vet Cancer Care center where Tshuvah is getting treated. They are friends of ours, maybe they know someone who can help.

LMAO!! I love it! I like Hitch or Miles.
Dawn,
I wonder if you contacted Best Friends to see if they had volunteers that would help. They are located in Utah just about 150 north of Vegas. I get emails all the time for local help through their site. I wonder if they could send out a request to their people? A phone call or email wouldn't hurt. Plus, they are loaded with money from the owners and donations. I think they actually charter jets to get rescues.

OK... I have not read this thread. However, I'm willing to help. I can drive from ABQ to as far as Flagstaff or Las Cruces, possibly even Deming. If needed, I can also do from ABQ to Raton. I only live 30 miles east of ABQ and 60 miles south of Santa Fe, so would prefer to not drive from here to Taos and then back. If desperately needed, such as in the very last leg to be filled, I can do the Taos to ABQ or to Raton.

PS - Has anyone put together a list of the legs which are filled and/or who is willing to do what?
Just read a bit more of the forum. If you want me to get him in Taos so he has a ride tomorrow, I have to get on the road within the next hour to go & get him in Taos!!!!! It is a several hour drive for me.
Reply ASAP!!!! Also, I will not be able to keep him until tomorrow as I've an injured dog here. Someone in ABQ will have to hold him. Can Bassett rescue hold him?
