Karen at the shelter just had him evaluated and he sounds just wonderful!

1.  Baggins weighs 75 pounds and is approximately 4 years old.  He may be crossed with a lab or shepherd.

2.  Baggins is very friendly, wags his tail and loves to go outside.

3.  He has no food aggression whatsoever.

4.  Not dog aggressive at all, in fact, he is good with other dogs and puppy's.

5.  Despite having 3 legs, Baggins loves to go for walks.  He walks happily and is not a puller at all.

6.  We did test him with a cat, he had no interest at all.  We took cat out of the crate, Baggins sniffed the cat and then the cat hissed at Baggins, when Baggins got hissed at he backed  up and sat down.  When we put her back in the cage, he sniffed her again and then had no interest.

7.  He doesn't normally mess in his kennel, but we don't know if he is housetrained or not.

8.  Sorry we don't have a video camera.  But, I can attest that he is a beautiful dog inside and out.

How sad is it that this boy overcame all that is involved with a leg amputation, only to end up being put down in a shelter?  I want to do what I can!  I need help through you all and crossposting to your other dog friends/forums to arrange a Rescue Railroad for him from Taos, NM, to Auburn, CA.  Either through AZ to Socal and up.  Or up to CO and over to Salt Lake to Reno, NV.

I still have to fill out their application and possibly have him for a vet visit for mets (although they assume an injury rather than cancer...), but I want to get this ball rolling.

Please email me directly at dawnsimas67@earthlink.net as I won't be on the forum until tomorrow.

Thanks!

For anyone wondering who Baggins is, here's a link to his original Tripawds Rescue Forum post. (Not sure why you started a new topic, but no worries, we just can't move posts to existing topics.)

We'll help in any way we can. I guess a road trip is out ofthe question? It is for us right now.

Oh, Dawn, if I could go pick him up myself and drive him to you, I so would!  I hope someone is able to help you transport him!  I wish you the best of luck!!!  He is such a beautiful dog, and it sounds like his personality is just as wonderful!

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.

I'm making inquiries among my rescue friends in Taos.  wish I was there to drive the first leg!  I'm also going to apply to Pilots N Paws once I have Dawn's airport info to see if there's a volunteer pilot able and willing to make the transport.

I'm so thrilled for Baggins, anytime a dog gets a home out of New Mexico, it is cause for celebration.

Thank you everyone!  Sorry about starting the new post, but it's more of a "I'm getting a dog and need help with transport" post, rather than "Baggins needs a home" and I wanted people to read it that could help, rather than those that know they weren't able to adopt him.  🙂

I have lots of leads, but nothing concrete, on transport from NM to CA.  There's a group called Pilots and Paws that a friend put us on.  Private pilots that fly little legs to move rescue dogs.  🙂  Also the Bulldog Network has a rescue railroad network and I've gotten tons of names and emails, so need to contact them all individually.  Even though he's not a bully, he will be Betty's little brother.  😉

I still haven't completely committed until I pay to have a vet check.  I'm waiting to find out from Beth what vet I should use there and the shelter will take him for me.  I want to know if his amputation was due to cancer or injury.  I suspect xrays would be a clue.  I'm hoping it's an injury!

Will update when I know more... But anyone in AZ, CO, UT, NV, NM, even if you can only drive him 100 miles locally, please let me know.  I will get all this info and then piece together a route.

Count us in for taking care of the first leg of the journey for Baggins. If no one is available in the middle, we could just meet you half way with him. We can either pick him up in Taos, or, we know someone who would probably be willing to bring him to Colorado Springs where we could get him. Together, we can do this! It should be fun. Can the shelter provide a crate? Keep us posted!

OMG, THANK YOU!  I think Beth can get someone maybe to get him a ways out of Taos...  So, how far in this direction can you bring him?  Are you in Colorado Springs now?

I have my little RV and I happen to have July 20-23 off to go camping in Big Sur, but...  Not enough time to go all the way and get him, but I could probably make it to Salt Lake and back, or Las Vegas depending on the route.  As you may remember with Raven, my last two excursions my truck broke down, so those routes are a bit desolate and would be scarey, but I must have faith that it will be okay!  A trip to Los Angeles area for me would be safer.  I'm looking at a map and that would be a lower route.  I have bulldog people that may be able to help in AZ to SoCal.

So, what do you think I need to cover with your help?  Check with your friends about the Taos to Colorado Springs leg and then you come to?  I'm not sure of the highway system from your area, would you come through Denver and west?

I will check on getting a foster for him until I can do my leg.  And also will check with Karen at the shelter and ask about a vari-kennel.  I'd probably have to buy one (and I have like 6 of them here!).

Thank you!

We could make it half way to CA from Taos. Rene is navigator, I just drive. So we'll let her chime in with route suggestions. But we're thinking I would just make the trip, without the trailer. Regarding what you need to cover, I just think we need to acquire a suitable crate.

I haven't gotten any bites yet from Pilots N Paws, and none of the canine rescue folks in Taos that I wrote to have responded, I'm sorry!  My best friend is in LA visiting her parents right now, and I know for sure that she will get Baggins from the shelter for whoever will be driving the first leg (how amazing, Jim and Rene, if y'all can do it).  I just have to find out when she'll be back.  Jim, if you are going to be driving from Taos, you could likely pick him up from the shelter, too, with Dawn's prior approval to the shelter personnel.

I think I have a crate in my backyard that would work if cleaned up.  Again, I'll have to locate a friend to go get it...wishing I was home to do all this myself, ugh.

Hey, I have a lead!

Okay, I spent *all day* yesterday on this.  I literally have hundreds of people sharing info.  I found a pilot that may be taking another pet from ABQ to COS (Colorado Springs) on Pilots n Paws.  It wasn't posted on that forum, but I had emailed some other pilots about combining trips with nearby cities and he forwarded to a bassett rescue that is going ABQ-COS and has room for a large dog he thinks.  No confirmed date, and Baggins still needs a vet check this week.  The shelter said they will not euthanize him and will hold on to him for me.  🙂

So, Jim, can you drive him to SLC from COS?  I will work on the SLC to SMF leg, but even if I can't find help, I can do that trip myself on a weekend...

Bless all of you and all the people that I've discovered that are out there saving these dogs (and cats and turtles and pigs...), it's just soooo heartwarming.

I can help in Vegas.  I can easily go to Barstow from St. George Utah or something.

Wouldn't I 40 be the best route?  I can go from Kingman to Barstow.  If someone from LA wouldn't mind driving to Barstow.

Cometdog, are you in Vegas?  I just got two pilots to offer to fly Taos to Vegas and Vegas to Auburn!  I would need someone to pick him up at the LAS airport and transfer him (possibly foster a night or two if they schedules don't connect exactly) to the new pilot...

Does anyone know more about this Pilot n Paws?  They just provide a service of the website so that we can all connect.  But it's almost too good to be true.  Is there a charge for these pilots?  Assuming not, they haven't said a thing and they "volunteer", I would like to "tip" them or something, I don't want to offend them though!  It's just so cool.....

My husband does some tech support for a group who does provides flights for rescues, for veterinary care, etc.  Not sure if it is the same group, but will ask.  It is an awesome service they provide.

And Dawn, I am so happy you are ready to make this step.  It will be so theraputic for you.  They never replace the one we lose, but they make the pain a little more bearable.

Added:

This is the group Bob supports.  The transports are all donated by individual pilots, and because of the charitable designation of the organization, there can be no charge for the service . The pilots are allowed to claim certain portions of the flight as a charitable contribution.  A tip would be a nice gesture, but are not required or expected.

Here is a link to their forum – there is a lot of information there
