Meet Mikey the Tripawd

Mikey is a handsome 3 year old, 50lb male Black Mouth Cur mix. He was part of a cruelty situation in TN, and our partner rescue group followed him for 6 months reporting his owners for cruelty. He has scarring around his neck from an embedded collar. His back left foot and part of his leg are gone either by some kind of attack he experienced while chained in the yard or he was caught in his chain and freed himself. He is up to date on vaccines and neutered. He is house trained and crate trained. Mikey has come so far and is ready to look for his furever home.

His fosters have had Mikey since March 2021. Since then he has become healthy and heartworm free, mastered using his prosthetic, and has been seeing At Attention Dog Trainers so that he can be prepared to meet his new family. Mikey would be perfect for someone looking for a special dog with special needs and a special heart.

He will need experienced, patient owners (Kids 16+) and a slow transition. When meeting new people, Mikey needs a hands-off, neutral approach so he can sniff and trust at his own pace. Once he knows you, you are his buddy. Mikey knows sit, stay, and leave it. He loves car rides and going for walks. He walks very nicely on leash. While on a walk, Mikey can get excited if he sees a reactive dog; however he is getting very good at redirecting his attention to his handler. He is excited but friendly when meeting new dogs. Mikey currently lives with a large dog, a small dog, and three cats.

He likes to play with other dogs and shares his toys nicely. He gets along great with all his housemates. *Mikey needs to be separated when pet meals are prepared- he went a long time having to fight for his food, and although he can sit, stay, and wait, this situation is stressful for him. We have had great success with using a gate or door, and separating Mikey during meal prep and while he is eating. Mikey loves peanut butter. He looks forward to his favorite food each time his prosthetic is attached or removed.
