Just got word about this handsome pup who's been in search of his forever home for quite a while. He is being fostered by One Planet Rescue in San Jose, CA. Please see his Facebook page for all the deets!

Al is the poster dog for not judging a book by its cover. Poor Al was found tethered to a tree by a prong collar, in the middle of a heat wave. At the shelter, he was terrified and in pain, and initially did not want to allow anyone near him. Finally, his prong was removed and staff and volunteers were able to show Al that people can be kind.

Once Al started to receive daily socialization and exercise, we saw a totally different dog! He recognizes his friends and gives them a great big smile and tail wag, and will even approach strangers very gently. Al also lets his goofy side out now: he loves to roll around on the grass and catch toys, and sometimes to roll around with his toys! He especially loves stuffies and squeaky toys, and will adorably carry around his “Mrs. Claus” toy. (We’ll send it home with him!) Al also enjoys sitting on a bench near his human friends, just watching the world go by.
Al is a smart boy.

He already knows how to walk nicely on a leash, how to “sit” for a treat, and that he should potty outside! Al loves learning new things and is motivated by high-value treats, so is easy and fun to train. Like many dogs in the shelter, the kennel noise makes him nervous and prompts jumping and barking. But if you give Al just a few minutes out of his kennel, and offer a treat so he knows you want to be friends, he is eager to show you his very best behavior.

Because he was mistreated in the past, we recommend Al go to a home where all family members have dog experience or are willing to learn. He should only be trained using positive methods. Al is a favorite of our volunteers, and they would be happy to share their training tips with you!

I think I have to agree with Sally...

What a handsome dog, though. I hope he finds a good home soon!
