OK, we think (hope) we know what's going on. Apparently there is no way posts can be removed from another member's unread topic list.

SPF Master said...

I assure you that the way new posts are marked as read and removed from the admin queues and members 'unread post list' has not changed. Only the display changed which removed the 'padding' (i.e., adding new posts that HAD been read to make up the numbers).

There is a difference (and always has been) between what we term the 'admins queue' of new posts and a users personal list of unread posts (be they a moderator or not). if a moderator chooses to use the admins queue list then another admin or moderator removing posts from that queue is global to the queue and will be reflected for all who select that view. This has always been the case.

So, with that said... if within Your Admin Options you have "Display the Admin Bar" turned off and "Display Unread Posts on Front Page" turned on, then posts will indeed disappear from that list when an admin reads them. This is the only scenario in which such can happen. hence the dashboard note for that option: "(displays admin new posts queue if enabled and not using admin bar, otherwise latest posts)"

If all else fails, clear your cache, and blame it on Monkeybutt! wink

Display Unread Posts on Front Page
A list of posts that an Admin has not yet read or moderated (admin new posts queue) or the user latest posts list can be optionally displayed on the main/front forum page where the post content can be quickly viewed. The display and location of these post lists is controlled by the admin new post queue option (global admin options), the your admin display unread posts on front page option and the forum option for new posts at top or bottom.

If the admins new post queue is disabled, this option controls displaying the user latest posts list. If the admins new post queue is enabled and the admin bar is enabled, this option also controls displaying the user latest posts list. In both cases, the forum option for new posts at top or bottom controls the location.

If the admins new post queue is enabled, but the admin bar is not enabled, then this option controls the display of the admins new queue list at the top or bottom of the forum depending upon the forum option for new posts location.

I thought I get better insight if I read the 'help' tab!   OOOOWEE WEE WEEE!

Can anyone decipher this?  (maybe Chloe's mom?)

Hello! I took 5 min to WRITE out the extremely dense text that you copy/pasted here and decided to decipher all of it in order to make sense of it. I don't think I could just look at that last bit to figure out what the heck it was saying if I didn't understand what came before it. Basically I broke each paragraph down, so you will see paragraph 1, 2, 3, which pertains to the three paragraphs in cometdog's post.

Paragraph 1:

Talks about a list of posts that:

       a. an admin has not yet read or moderated (which is listed in an area only the all-powerful admin sees)

       b.  the user sees as the "latest posts" lists (what YOU should see when you log in)

These can be optionally displayed on the main/front forum page where the content can be viewed quickly (the "unread" posts with the red markings I assume) BY THE ADMIN.  The display and locations of these posts (new, unread ones to each user) is controlled by the admin with god-like powers options:

        a. "new post" queue (controls user's viewable latest posts)

        b. the "admin display unread posts" on the front page (admin option only)

        c. the option to post new posts on the top/bottom forum page

Paragraph 2: (probably the important one)

If the admin's "new post" queue is changed (god-like power #1) or the admin bar is changed to where it is enabled or disabled, it WILL affect what the user sees as new posts. This means if it is in a certain position (does not say specifically whether enabling or disabling) it is probably the cause of the "disappearing" posts.

Paragraph 3: (the one cometdog was interested in)

If the admin's new post queue is enabled, but the admin bar is disabled, then the all powerful admin god changes his own admin "new queue" list (this can also be modified to be displayed at his preference either at the top or the bottom of the forum page). Basically this last part pertains to our tripawd god admin and not us users.

Any better?

We can always try...

A list of posts that an Admin has not yet read or moderated
(admin new posts queue) or the user latest posts list can be optionally
displayed on the main/front forum page where the post content can be
quickly viewed.

The Admin Bar shows posts neither admin has read yet. If it is not selected to display, then it's functions (mark read, quick reply, etc.) appear in the Tecent Topics with Unread Posts list area.

The display and location of these post lists is
controlled by the admin new post queue option (global admin options),
the your admin display unread posts on front page option and the forum
option for new posts at top or bottom.

We control whether or not the Admin Bar is enabled for Moderators to use, should they choose to, and they can control whether or not to display the Unread List, the location of which we control.

If the admins new post queue is disabled, this option controls
displaying the user latest posts list. If the admins new post queue is
enabled and the admin bar is enabled, this option also controls
displaying the user latest posts list. In both cases, the forum option
for new posts at top or bottom controls the location.

If we turn off the Admin Queue, then this option is only for displaying the Unread list, or not. Since the Queue is enabled, it is also used to show the Unread List, however ...

If the admins new post queue is enabled, but the admin bar is not
enabled, then this option controls the display of the admins new queue
list at the top or bottom of the forum depending upon the forum option
for new posts location.

... if a Moderator has chosen to hide the Admin Bar, the Queue will appear in the List, which we have set to display at the top of the Forums.

OH MY DAWGIDY!  I was just kidding but thanks!

That's is great, Chloe's talented mom!  I can't wait until Karen (mod pawd squad Tripug Maggie's mom) reads it!

We two are having problems with new posts in topics dropping off the new post list before we can respond to them.  So we can't keep track.   Hence, we look like the snob mod pawd squad!

Thanks admin!  It was a valiant effort, too!

There are 4 options to check. What should we check to make it work right?

My is checked with #1 and #4  (I don't want #3)

Everything is working fine for betaman with 1 and 4 checked. Perhaps the issue has something to do with all the testing and resetting of global options we've been doing the past few days. let's give this some time and see how it goes.

Do any Moderators even use the Queue? If not we'll see about just disabling it for you and see if that helps.

Hey Cometdog,

I have #1 and #4 checked as well.  I went through this last night with Mr. Admin in the chat room .  When I first logged on everything was working perfectly.  I started with 18 posts and one by one got down to 11.  Then into the chat room where it seemed after going over everything with Admin all was right with the world.  So I told him everything was fine and went back to the main forum page in another browser window.  My list of unread posts was down to 1 so 10 dropped off.  I reported to Admin in the chat room and I think I heard bad words all the way from CO.

According to the SPF experts and our exalted leader Admin man this can not possibly be happening with the settings I have.

Therefore you and I are insane and must be imagining things or can't count.

So my new plan it to try the power of positive thinking- if admin says everything is working fine I am going to believe in it with all my might.  So far it seems to be working out, although I have not been on line much today.

Each morning I will get up and before turning on the computer I will face the rising sun and chant: one post, two post, three post, four, let the tripawd forums keep accurate score!

I will report back here tomorrow on how things are working out.

That's the spirit! If problems persist, please try turning off the Admin Bar and viewing topics with unread posts from the Page View instead of the forum front page. let us know if that makes any difference and in the mean time we'll keep working with the developer to try and determine just how insane y'all may be.

As promised (or threatened) I am updating...

For most of the day everything seemed fine.  Tonight I was on and had 3 browser windows open.   I was working on Mag's blog, and in the chat room with Jerry.  When I left the main forum page there were 14 lines of recent topics with unread posts (and over 30 new posts showing in the red box in the admin bar).  When I went back there were only 2 lines with unread posts (and 0 new posts in the admin bar).

Similar situation to my post #14 above.

I'll try turning off the admin bar as suggested tomorrow.

Karen
