Dumb question maybe. I've tried and tried to follow the instructions to customize a blog banner but when I get a picture ready and have to crop it all I end up with is a narrow little strip of Catie's eyes, etc. I've gone through the tutorial so many times I can hear that dude's voice in my head. Does anyone have some magical tips??

Hi Carmen, I think it just might be the nature of the beast. You might need to select a photo that is more panoramic in nature to begin with. But to be honest with you I don't know what I'm talking about because I'm the king of computer losers! We should start a club or something. I hope you get it working.

Thanks, Brett. I'll see if my camera can take panoramic shots. I'm not very good with the camera either.

I think a computer-loser support group is in order.  smiley

First, there are no losers here! big-grin

And it's not really a computer issue, creating the perfect banner is just a matter of understanding aspect ratio. While all the blog themes have a different size header banner image, they include the same crop function which maintains the same ratio regardless of crop size. So, tips? Not sure they're magical, but her goes...

  1. Upload a photo that is large enough to include a short wide area that you believe will fit within the banner's aspect ratio.
  2. The best way to prepare a banner exactly as you want it to appear is to create it in an image editing program prior to upload at the dimensions specified in the Header tab (970x140 for the default theme you're using).  Chance's blog header is a great example of this method:

    1. Create a new document using Photoshop, MS Paint, Gimp (free open source image software) at 72dpi with the dimensions required by your theme (See Appearance -> Header tab, if available)
    2. Open image(s) you want to include in your header banner and copy desired area.
    3. Paste images into your banner document
    4. Add color, type, any other elements and adjust as necessary.
    5. Fatten the image (if applicable) and save as JPEG.
    6. Upload via the header tab and no cropping will be required.

  3. Enlist the services of another member to create a banner image for you. (Perhaps that is a good topic for the Skillshare forum since we have moved this one here to the Tech Support forum .)

Thank you!!!

I'll give this a try and if I can't make it work (I can't afford, in more ways than one, to grind down any more teeth) I'm going to beg for someone else's assistance. big-grin

Catie, if you still have issues and need help, I would be happy to put one together for you with your photo(s).  You can PM me if you want and I can send you my email address. Best of luck!  🙂

Chance, our 9.5 year old Rottie/Shepherd mix was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in his left front shoulder.  In July of 2010, we planned to proceed with the amputation, but lung mets were discovered.  Chance reached the Rainbow Bridge October 1, 2010, just a few weeks after his 10th birthday.

While I know nothing about the original banner question, I would like to be in the club for computer losers, please.

Let's just not have any on-line meetings, okay!?

Chance's mom beat me to it!

I'd do for you too!

I have your pics! I got almost everyone's pics!   It would take a whole 5 minutes.  I do graphics every day. So, if anyone wants one, speak up.

I 2nd that motion....no on-line meetings. I find it very hard to believe that you, Lincoln's Mom, a gifted writer, philosopher, and super dog mom would want to join our most humble group of PC losers. But hey, I'm thrilled. Welcome aboard newest member! Now what?way-confused

I'd be a loser too but I was lucky enough to have a 19 year old teach me how several years ago.   He'd need $20 here and there to buy something for his car his was working on.  So, I learned by throwing a $20 spot to him every month over the course of 2 years.  Luckily, I learned what I needed to know before his needs got expensive!

I'm not kidding when I say I don't know how to run a cell phone!  I am the Sammy's mom of cell phones!
