Every Tripawd has a great story to tell, and we want to share yours with the world in the newest edition of Tripawd Heroes, a collection of three-legged love stories.

Tripawd Heroes Book Sample

From now until September 19, 2011, we are accepting submissions of photos and stories from Tripawds members who want to star in this book. A limited number of pages are available to share stories so please read on for details and act now for your best chance to be included.

Inspiration Instead of Fundraising

Since love alone cannot pay to keep this community online, all proceeds from this book will go directly toward defraying the costs of keeping Tripawds online. This special project is our latest effort to avoid another annual fundraising campaign. That's right, with this project and the various other ways to help support Tripawds, we hope to never ask members for money again.

Tripawd Heroes Book Sample

Instead of endless fundraising appeals, you can get a beautiful full-color, 7" x 7" soft cover book featuring the inspawrational stories of amazing canine amputees. Act now to include yours! The books will make great gifts for veterinary offices and help keep Tripawds online. It's a win-win for everypawdy. The price has not yet been set, but since we will only receive a couple bucks from the sale of each book, no discounts will be available to those who participate.

How to be Featured

Tripawd Heroes will feature a number of inspawrational dogs who have been active participants of the Tripawds Community over the past four years. Remaining pages are available for up to 12 stories. Each dog featured will receive one page with 3 to 5 photos. Exemplary photos may warrant full-page presentation.

This Tripawds photobook will be available for ordering by mid-October. The first 12 members to submit their story will be considered for publication. Here are the details:

  • Tripawd Heroes Book Sample
Submission Deadline: Monday, September 19, midnight
  • Story length: 250 words maximum
  • Can be about Tripawds past and present, single or multi-Tripawd families*
  • Photo Requirements: 3 to 5 high quality photographs (300dpi minimum)
  • Please include name, city/state and your Tripawd's milestone dates.
  • All three legged dogs welcome! Tripawds is not just about cancer.
  • Include your Tripawds blog address, if applicable.
  • Participation is limited to Tripawds members only. (Register here.)
  • Submit stories in the body of an email to jerry with photos attached, or compress your images together (.zip or .sit) and use the Tripawds contact form.
  • Please be aware that space constraints may prevent us from including all stories, but read on for information about upcoming editions.

*Stories with more than one Tripawd will be featured on the same page.

The book is a lovely idea, however it's most unfortunate that there wasn't more thought put into both the selection process, lacking transparency, and almost more importantly, the wording of the correspondence sent only to those whose "more recent…Tripawd hero….has been selected" therefore, making "the cut" The late addition of the twelve stories is a welcome step toward objectivity.

Every canine amputee on this site has a story, is a hero in their own way, and is loved by someone who has struggled, worried and is very proud of all they have achieved, whether it was for 12 weeks, 12 months, or forever. Many of these people have contributed their time, thoughts, friendship and financial support to both the site and individual members during their time here. Neither the canine, nor human accomplishments should be diminished by what appears a subjective popularity contest, particularly when the ultimate goal is fundraising.

I hope the book represents a good cross section of Tripawds that shows the diversity of the community. Young, old, front leg, rear leg they all contribute to what makes this place so special. I look forward to a book with a compelling group of stories that will appeal to people both inside and outside the world of Tripawds.

You're right. All dogs are heroes, that's why we are publishing this book. But it's unfortunate that we can't publish all 2,854 stories belonging to every Tripawd who has ever been a part of the community. If only that were possible. And just as we can't have every member be a guest on Tripawd Talk Radio , as you once were, we can only do our best with the time and resources we have at hand.

In the meantime, this is our best attempt to publish a fun book representing a cross-section of the different types of Tripawds who come here, from Great Danes to Pugs, from dogs with cancer to those with birth defects.

I am sorry you feel this is a "popularity contest" but that was absolutely not our intent. Our only intent was to share as many stories as possible, create another resource for members that would benefit them and the greater world at large and serve as an attempt to avoid begging for money to offset the costs involved in maintaining this site.

If any member has any concerns about things that go on here at Tripawds, we hope that they will contact us directly. Our life is pretty much an open book. We are always available to listen and address any issues that someone has.

I have an idea--no clue if it's feasible but what the hey. If you get a lot of interest, how about multiple books down the road to represent different groups. More folks can participate then, and you benefit as well.

You can have the Goldens of Tripawds, the Labs of Tripawds, etc. I don't know how many Katrina dogs are here, but maybe Katrina dogs or dogs rescued from other natural disasters (worldwide). Dakota falls into a couple of categories--like many of our dogs--so he can be a res dog or a rags-to-riches rescue. Tripawds has an awful lot of rags-to-riches rescues and I think many of them are such inspirations. I see  many possibilities. Any thoughts?

Can't wait Charon & Gayle!

Shari, is is absolutely feasible, we mention that future editions will be published in the blog post. See? AND we also mention that absolutely anyone will be able to get a book customized with their dog's story.

I like your idea for theme books too, that's neat!

Jerry, I did see that you will have future editions of the book. I thought themes might be fun, because you can have the centerfolds of tripawds. Abby already started that one. I know there are more...

Centerfolds... Yes, Abby would be all over that!

I am sharpening my pencil and Abby is trying out some new beguiling poses.

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Once again, Freaky Ears, you are just jealous cuz you aren't even eligible for the book! Now, if there was a special edition for freaky eared, four-legged, red-eyed, vampire pests, THEN you could be the centerfold!

rasberry

And of course I'm popular! I'm pretty!!!! What else do you need in this great society of ours to be popular besides good looks???

Kisses,

Fabulous Abby

I didn't see the word "contest" anywhere.  Tripawds has had calendars, its had t-shirts in honor of specific tripawds, and a previous edition of Tripawd Heroes.  I don't see how this is any different or in any way disparaging to the honor of those not included this time.

Thanks for all your varied efforts to spread the word that it's better to hop on three legs than limp on four, Jim and Rene!  It gave Yoda four more high quality months of life I might have been talked out of otherwise and may very well have saved Gerry's life!!! (If another foster home for him wasn't going to turn up in time, which was possible).  I couldn't have helped them, if you and Jerry hadn't helped me to understand. big-grin

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

Videos and pics of Gerry's pawesomeness can be found at: http://gerry.tripawds.com
