Hello all.

Im not sure where to start as my head feels like it’s continuously spinning.

On Feb 21, 2019 we got the worst news we had ever received. Our 10 year old Rottweiler has Osteosarcoma. He just turned 10 on Feb 2nd. The vet recommended an ultrasound and full body scan which we have scheduled for Feb 26th to see if the cancer has spread. If the scans come out clear we are going ahead with amputation of his front right leg.

Hes a big boy weighing in at 120lbs and I’m really concerned about how he will do without this limb.

Tank is usually a pretty happy boy but I can see his pain. We have him on pain killers and anti inflammatories and also just started a regiment of CBD oil which has made a difference.

We are so worried about him but this forum has given us the hope that just a few days ago we didn’t have. Thank you all for that.

Please say a prayer for our baby.

I’m not sure how to start my own thread. Sorry I can’t remove this either. Ugh

Okay, deep breaths.  Really!  B R E A T H E! We know this was hard to hear.  We also know you are doing EXACTLY what needs to be done to give your sweet Rottie the best quality,  PAIN FREE life possible.   You've had the kick in m the gut, you've had sleepless nights, you're  stressed beyond belief.  Yeah, we understand!!

Bravo to you for moving forward, doing your research, getting  the diagnostics done,  and plowing  through the fear!    Amputation  is mine surgery  and, after recovery,  the pain is gone!

Recovery is no picnic for a couple of weeks.  Sometimes  the bigger "mature"dogs take several days to start to get their sea legs, so no worries about that. Sloooow and easy.  And stock up on patience!  If you don't  have it, you'll develop it during recovery.

Size and age don't  matter much around here.  Just numbers.  My Happy  Hannah was 125 lb "fluffy" Byll Mastiff and handled three like a Ballerina.  Weve hsn 170 lb (plus)  Grest Danes  like Eurydice handle three like a Champ.

One of our beloved Rotties around here is Sassy and her Mom Michelle.   I'm  sure she'll chime in.  I think Sassy was around 135 lbs and handled  life on three like she always had a spare!.  She did everything  that she always did, but pain free!

Let us know what questions  you may have, okay? And remember your pup (what's his name) doesn't  care about anymore diagnosis.    Upir Rottie os living  effortlessly  from one moment to the other.  He lives in the NOW. We call that Being More Dog.

STAY CONNECTED.   QE ARE HERE WITH UOU THE WHOLE WAY!  AND WE WILL BE CHEERING  FOR YOUR ROTTIE EVERYTIME HE HAS ANOTHER VICTORY!

BREATHE....GET SOME REST....DEVOUR CHCOLATE.

Hugs

Tank, Jay and Shelly, you've come to the right place. I'm sorry for the bad news but rest assured even big dogs can do great on three! Tank is definitely not the biggest doggie we've ever had join us. If your vets think he's a good candidate, that's wonderful.

Please keep us posted, we'll be waiting for a pupdate when you can.

We are currently in the same situation as you are, only a couple weeks ahead.  Our 7 year old Rottie got the same diagnosis 2 weeks ago today but on his rear leg.  He woke up limping Sunday morning, we immediately took him to vet next day and after X Rays we got the terrible news. Thankfully his body scans came back negative for spread so as hard as it was to wrap our heads around it...we immediately moved toward amputation.

He had surgery four days ago and walked out of the hospital 24 hours later.  We are keeping him quiet and his activity very low and confined but he has made tremendous strides already.  He is about 95 pounds with an athletic build.  It's three days after surgery and he can already get up on his own and move around pretty good.  It's really quite amazing.  He's like, "Whatever... I guess I'll just hop around from now on."

He was a little wobbly the first two days so we used a harness and leash to keep him steady but today he is getting the hang of it and doesn't even need our help stabilizing himself when he's up.  He seems to want to move about more but we are forcing him to go slow and are keeping his moving sessions to just a few minutes at a time followed by hours of rest and an ice session.  He is peeing but we are still waiting for that elusive first poop.  We are cautiously optimistic and know there is still a long road ahead to recovery but so far so good.

I don't know Tank or what kind of shape he is in now but I hope our limited experience thus far helps.  I was apprehensive of posting this because things can just as easily change for the worse at any moment but reading other people's posts have helped us out.  Our advise is to just concentrate on one task at a time as you move forward.  Your next step is body scans so just focus in on that and then move forward to the next thing after that otherwise it's just too overwhelming.

My guess is Tank will handle it like a champ...after all, he is a Rottie!

HI and Welcome to the club no one wants to join.  Sassy was 128 pounds when she was diagnosed.  She came home the same day (my vet didn't have overnight care.)  She was a right rear amputee.  Got up the same day and hopped out and pottied and tried pulling the vet tech out of the parking lot.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Well today we got the dreaded phone call.  Our boy Tank’s body was filled with cancer. All major organs where covered. I truly didn’t think he was that sick. He didn’t show any signs of being sick until maybe 3 weeks ago. No accidents in the house, eating, greeting us at the door, etc. He just had a limp.

I feel that as a parent to him I should have seen something was wrong.

We made the hardest decision we have ever had to make, we put him to rest tonight at 6:36pm.

Thank you all for your kind words. They truly gave a glimmer of hope.

Shelly, Tanks mom.

Oh Shelly, I'm  so very, very sorry.  We are all cry7 with you tonight and our hearts are broken too.  Just didn't  see this coming.  While I undersand how you feel, there was NO way on this earth you could have seen this coming!!  NO WAY!!  Unfortunately,  nothing  could have been done regardless.  This piece of s××t disease is so brutal, so cunning, so cruel.  It had already  plotted its course.

I'm glad that Tank didn kmow he was sick.. I'm  glad he was able to shed his earth clothes  before that piece of crap disease  brought him pain and misery.  You gave him the gift of release  that allowed him to keep his dignity and allowed him to still have quality  time right up until his transition.

I wish I had words of comfort.  I wish I could hug you.  I wish things were different  for you.  I know Tank would not have changed  one single thing in his life as long as he could be loved by you, and as long as he could love you.  Tank knew more joy and more love than many dogs ever get to experience.❤

Stay connected with us right now of it's not too difficult,  okay?  We know the depth of your love for Tank and we know the depth of your pain right now.  We know and we want to be here by your side in any way we can to help you through these very, very tough times,  You and Tank are family.

We also want you to be aware that Tank WILL connect with you and let you know he is happy and healthy and whole and that he is always by your side.  We would love to hear more about your sweet boy when you can, okay?  And we would love to see pictures!

Surrounding  you with Tank"s slobbery kisses

My heart broke when I saw the news, I can only imagine how you and Jay are feeling right now. My deepest condolences and love are being sent to you across the miles.

We didn't even get the chance to get to know Tank, but if he didn't let on that he was so sick, one thing is clear: he was truly a warrior through and through. Never once did he let on because he was more concerned about keeping the pack solid and happy for as long as possible. Your boy always put himself first, and when it came time for you to put aside your grief and shock, you came through for him in the most loving, compassionate way any of us could. You made the most selfless call to help him transition on, and for that he will repay you a thousand times over by keeping his spirit strong in your life.

If and when you are ready, visit our Coping with Loss forum and share more about your life with him. We'll all give Tank a tribute fitting of a warrior.

Many hugs coming your way, now and always.
