Maggie thanks for that great link!  I had not seen that article before and it is complete with references so I am going to print it out for my clients.

thanks everybody...I was worried that some might think this was too soon, but the house is sooo empty and I know Magic would approve.  Apparently this litter has something to do with things like On the Label (don't ask me, i don't do show dogs...or didn't)  I was thinking Off Label Whiskey...actually I like Fluffy Snickerdoodle too...(candy, cookies)

I love Mystic and Wizard...great picks, thanks for the link I shall go look.

RIght now I'm kinda leaning toward River (with Fluffy as a nickname just to bug his auntie!!) because his father's name is Phoenix...His Mother's name is Libby and I won't do the lyrics to the commercial because someone emailed those to me and I now have an earworm....

just poured an entire 64 ounces of this SCOE 10X stuff that is supposed to take out all odor no matter how old...there is one troublesome corner from an old cat....figured I'd better get all the animals smells out of here...now I have to go extract it....damn, wish regular carpet cleaning took it out.

Going to put up the crate (did I mention I have NEVER crate trained and I think this crate may be bigger than my bedroom....) to make sure Casper Conehead doesn't freak out...he has actually slept with me like a good little kitty for the last three nights (YEA YEA YEA) and now I wonder if I should have waited and kept him in the bathroom at night til the puppy was acclimated...well that may be the first of many many mistakes....

I am really truly leaning now toward waiting on the neutering...I didn't want to because I wanted to eliminate any aggression, but I'm thinking if I socialize socialize socialize I may be ok....maybe.  I have had only one dog aggressive animal and that was my higher content wolfdog...he loved the wolves he grew up with, but sounded like he would kill any other dog coming near him....I think there was a second socialization period that I totally spaced....not this time....no excuses, I'm retired.  trying to block off the attractive yummy corners of the house outside....but I'm thinking since I'm not working, if I crate him when I have to go to the store and stuff like that....maybe the house structure will be safe...maybe.

It is funny...when you haven't had a puppy for a long long time, you forget about puppies.  And the older dog becomes a saint (I'm sure Magic never ever did anything bad...yeah, right)..... 6 days and counting....

I can't wait either!  We are going to have some good belly laughs with you and a puppy!

Don't even feel bad about crate training!  Crates are like dens to dogs.  I thought Rocket would never get used to them because he'd cry when we left and I wanted to cuddle him.  But after a while he was fine.  Now, he naps in the various crates in the house.   Plus, puppies will not only tear up the house but they will chew electrical cords!  So, it's a safety measure for them as well.

Rugby  preferred to be crated when we left - he was a little scared of Comet if no one was around!  So, he'd run to his crate as soon as he saw we were leaving.

Trouble was the first dog we had ever crated - Bob always thought it was cruel.  For us it was a safety thing as well.  There was no telling what she would get in to if she wasn't watched.  There was not a sheet or blanket in my house with a corner on it.  She would take ANYTHNG off my nightstand and eat it or destroy it.  Clothes were not safe, shoes were not safe - nothing was safe.  She slept in the crate so we could sleep without worrying about her.  She was about 18 months old before we could trust her alone in the house.  Once she got there, we never had another problem with her.

Duke came to us crate trained.  He will crate himself if he feels insecure - it doesn't happen often, but it does happen.  For example, he doesn't like for me to sneeze.  If I sneeze, he goes to his crate.  One of those demons we continue to work on.  We leave the crate door open so it is always available to him.

I hightly recommend it.  Make it a positive experience.  Give him a value toy and a value treat when he goes in and make it a happy experience. Do not use it as a method to punish him.  There is a whole group of folks out there that consider putting them in a crate for a time out to be a positive experience, I'm still trying to distinguish between punishment and time out.  Evidently it has to do with your tone and body language.  They insist the dog doesn't see a time out as punishment and it only lasts long enough for them to calm down. Another topic for another day!

We have a naughty crate for Rocket!  It was used for nothing else except time-outs.  We haven't had to naughty crate him in a while so now that is where he goes to nap on his own while I'm on the computer (with it open).  At night he is crated in the bedroom with us or otherwise we'd never sleep.  He actually loves his bed crate.

We still have two more crates in the garage!  We are crate crazy!  Actually we bought soft sided crates when Comet had the knee surgeries because her gimpy paw could get caught in wire crates.

Congratulations! I think the whole idea is very sweet. I was led to Daisy and adopted her one month to the day after losing my beagle Molly. I was going to think about getting another dog for about 6 months or so. Ya, right! I was led to Daisy, just as you were led to this cutie pie. I know someone else had this same question: What is the breed? Is "adorable" a breed? laughing Should be!

Daisy, 12 years young, had left forelimb amp on 5/19/2010 due to osteosarcoma. She left her body behind and joined the other spirit tripawds on 7/16/2010.
So grateful for each day with her!

I swear to you this is the best damn site on the entire internet....it really is....not just for the nasty disease and bad stuff....just look at all the information you guys are providing me...I just got the crate out of the box and into the house, I only banged and scraped one shin, dislocated one elbow and got on the phone and called "auntie linda" (who found cutie pie fluffy) and said get the whatsits over here...I can't do directions!!!! So she is on her way....that sucker is HEAVY...but the good news is, laying on the floor it looks no bigger than the area that Magic's bed took up when I made him a bed in the bedroom...in fact it might be smaller cuz I won't have the auxillary bedding around the pad!!  My thought is to put a plastic sheeting or one of the covers from the pads UNDER the crate?  Since I'm dealing with that enzyeme thing right now, I truly don't want to deal with it anywhere else!!  Although doggie pee is much milder than kitty pee donchaknow!

Fluffy Snickerdoodle Mystic River is a malamute!!  and we'll leave the discussion of smooth coat/long coat/wooly coat what the heck to those who care!!!!

Hey, maybe Mystic River?  wasn't that a movie or something?

Off to see if I can bang up the other shin....

At the risk of dating myself again, I thought you might be thinking of Mystic Pizza, then I rememebred the Clint Eastwood film Mystic River with Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon. Good flick!

Diane, I found The The Art of Raising a Puppy to be an excellent read. It's never to soon to give a pup a loving home. If your ready that's all that matters.  Don't think bad of me but I already know that I will have another CC as well as two Karelian Bear Dogs. I have my reasons for these selections. That said, I would also love to open my home up to a couple of less fortunate pups through adoption. Why not a whole pack, right?

Excellent receommendation! We found this book very helpful when rasing Jerry. Not just for it's valuable training methodology, but for the tips the Monks of New Skete share for truly connecting with your dog.

Their second book is also worth consideration...

Diane,

Congratulations on the new puppy!! I also like Mystic River for a name... but maybe you'll just have to wait until 'Fluffy' comes home and see what fits him best. Since Casper is just a kitten, they will probably become good friends pretty quickly...

Definitely do the crate training... I've done it with all my dogs... even when we adopted Jake at 5 yrs... They all loved their crate and would go in and out of it all day. It sure came in handy when one of them got sick... At times Jake would climb into the crate with Wolfie too!

I know that you are missing Magic so much, but this will help you heal your heart... I'm so happy for you!! I'm looking forward to seeing all your posts and pictures about the adventures of Casper and 'Fluffy'!!! big-blink

Oh Diane !! He is so adorable .... I think that's great. laugh You have a wonderful heart - I think it's awesome that you are able to open it - and your home - to such beautiful animals. As you've said - you've always been an animal person - and God knows there are many animals out there who need people like you. (btw - I want to know more about this enzyme stuff you're talking about !!)

"Mystic River" aka "Snickerdoodles" aka "Fluffy" all sound like great names to me. I think he'll learn to come to your voice no matter what you call him ! (He sure is fluffy, though !!winker

"Casper" is quickly loosing ground to "Conehead" .... hmmm all this agonizing over names - and we all end up calling them something entirely different anyway.

Somehow my very dignified "Amelia" cat ended up with "Mooie" or "MooCat" because my son couldn't say "Milly" - which was already her nickname. And my grey tabby - the runt - "Chester" has been dubbed "Cheddar" or even "Ched". "Wolfie" (the long-haired white cat) has become "Fuzzybutt", or "Fuzz-bucket." So - really - I say - go for it "Fluffy" !!

Angel Jake's mom - LOVE the crate pictures of Wolfie and Jake. Too cute !

Diane, I have never had any experience with a crate, but my dad had his dog trained and she would  go on her own when she was tired, I think there is a sense of security with them when trained the right way. And about that undescended testicle,  you should only have to pay half price on the neuter!!!  Congratulations on your new buddy, I think it's great, Paws up

My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
