When our Max went through amp the tramadol seemed to wire him up.  Seemed in those early days he never slept longer than 15 minutes at a time with a lot of whining.  We did try ace once but that wasn't the answer made it worse.  We had been given some Tylenol with codeine for preamp pain so we switched out the tramadol for that and gave no more ace either.  Once he was on just rimadyl and the Tylenol with codeine for pain we had a way more calm and rested dog.  Just throwing that out there because for us a switch up in the pain meds made a huge difference for us.  Of course we did check with the surgeon first to make sure the switch up was ok.  Poor Izzy.  I feel so bad for all of you.  Hopefully it will get better soon.  Crossing fingers and paws here for that to happen.  Hugs!

Unfortunately, your experience is very similar to mine with Tess' cruciate repair.  She will not be very mobile, and she will have a lot of difficulty moving herself around.   Tess just stood there several times crying the first few nights because she could not figure out how to lay down.   And then, she was up and down, couldn't really sleep well.   It was really hard - much harder in the first few nights than Otis' amp.   Bribery (heavy duty bribery) was the only way to get her outside.   But, on a positive note, staying still is the best thing for her (of course, absent appropriate potty breaks).    We were also given the sedative - I used it once, and then tossed it.   It made Tess so "drunk" that I was truly afraid she would hurt herself moving around (and it did not make her stay put, like it was supposed to, just made her move around drunk).   We were told to ice as well - very similar to the amp. procedure here.   Unfortunately, the best thing for this first week or so is to stay in the room with her so she does not feel a need to come find you.   Take her outside when you think she really needs to go.   Otherwise, let her rest.   Bring your laptop, chores, crafts, whatever right there in the room with her.   I binge watched three seasons of Defiance during Tess' recovery.   And no problem bringing her the food and water - by next week, she should be able to return to her bowl.  There will be improvement, and you will start getting sleep soon, just stay with her to keep her quiet.   And unfortunately, it is not the magic "when the staples come out" mark - you will likely need to keep her quiet for most of the next month, but you will see less pain over than time.   Hang in there!

I think the fentanyl patch is what is making tramadol a no no. It's tooooo much. Tonight, she's hacking up slime so I think maybe her pills (gabapentin) got stuck half way down. She did walk from the kitchen to her bed sp maybe she inhaled a piece of food that she was "saving for later" in her mouth. Either way, it's been raining here like nobody's business (tropical storm related, I hear) and she stepped in shit both times she went out tonight. All over her bandaged foot. The fentanyl patch. Which I'm not supposed to touch. So so SO frustrating. She literally has pooped once and stepped in it twice. One damn log.

Hey, at least the mosquitoes have made a resurgence with the rain!

Tomorrow will be better ... but I really do need some sleep tonight. Fingers crossed.

The surgeon may ask to see her sooner rather than later. I sent over photos of he incision and swelling ... I think it's fine but would rather be overly concerned than not enough. I think they will say she's ok and on track as well.

Will keep everyone updated, provided I manage to stay alert! laughing

Oh Izzy! What a smart girl to save a little bit of food for a snack later! 🙂

Yah, one state over in Virginia and it was such a heavy and hard deluge of rain it appeared to be nighttime during the day! And kudos for Izzy going outside to poop...even if she stepped in it. Bob and Nellie HATE to get their feet wet and they go on the porch when it rains! Merry Myrtle poos on the ramp and Frankie is the only one who goes in the yard!

Just to think Izzy can actually walk with that leg all "put together" like it is amazes me! She's such a trooper!!

A d glad you se t the vet some pictures for reassurance!

Hopi g for some good zzzz's for you tonight.

Lots of love!

Last night -  SO   MUCH   BETTER!

Izzy has decided that she's good and tired of laying on the same side and finally has enough power to get the ball rolling on rotating from one side to the other. So while I was up every 2 or 3 hours to help her turn over, she was SO much more peaceful. I also took the vet office's advice and gave her a supplemental Gabapentin in the dead of night.

It seems that now, Izzy's whining is her new "I gotta pee" ... she used to snap/fake bark. Not sure I can chalk allllll the whining she's done since surgery to that, but, I took her out at 8 and 1230ish last night and both times, that what that whining was about. Obviously, food/water intake is increasing now as well, so more frequent potty breaks are expected.

Heard from the surgeon's tech this morning and she advised that the doc is pleased with the looks of the incision. So glad that my amateur diagnosis was spot on. She also suggested to start alternating cold/warm compresses to help with the fluid buildup. I knew that after a few days out, I was to switch to warm, but seems that because she's got  fair amount of fluid, they want me to alternate.

I can't tell you how much better *I* feel after getting some sleep. Even interrupted sleep is better than next to none! We stayed downstairs so that I don't have to do so much carrying. Izzy's poppa only came for the weekend so it's back to just me. It really worked out fine, the couch is big and comfy enough ... especially for 2 hour naps lol

I'll be going to the office for about 6 hours today so Izzy will have to wear the cone of shame . She doesn't rest as well with it but who knows ... maybe less peaceful rest during the day will equate to sounder sleep at night?! Goals, baby!! Goals!

BTW - I'd meant to put the turd emoji in my last post but forgot this isn't messenger and typing sh*t doesn't make it appear LOL poopicon_pngOpportunity lost.

This is a really good post.   I am glad you got some sleep, and sounds like Izzy is doing much better.   If it helps, with Tess we did not have the "crash" that some dogs get at about day 5 after amputation.   She just continued to slowly improve.   Although, we did not have a fentanyl patch (and, in retrospect, her pain was probably not as well controlled as it should have been.   I just didn't know any better.)   When I first returned to work, I put Tess in a crate.   Neither of my dogs have ever been crated, and when I returned home, Tess was laying on my mattress.  The next day, I tried a lock on the crate, instead of just the latch.   When I returned, the metal crate had been ripped to shreds.  Otis obviously had a hand in this as well.   Fortunately, once I gave up on the crate, Tess would just spend the day sleeping on my mattress and no harm was done (other than to the crate).   Hopefully Izzy will spend a nice relaxing six hours sleeping while you are away.smiley

I'm glad to hear things are a bit better- it's amazing what just a little rest does for us!

Obie never crashed either after either of his surgeries. I was lucky that he tolerated the fentanyl and tramadol without getting agitated, Maggie was a wreck on tramadol.

I can't shut Obie in a crate because of his history so the vet let me make a small recovery area out of a x-pen. Obie always slept with me so I put my mattress on the floor. I still helped him up but at least in the middle of the night if he got up he couldn't really hurt himself.  I put another x-pen across the room at the foot of the bed so there was only one side he could get down and he couldn't get out of the room.

To keep him away from his incision when I wasn't home I made him some little pants and used one of those inflatable donut collars.  With his short pug nose the donut was enough.  He never bothered either incision, there were no visible sutures so maybe it didn't get itchy, but when he wasn't supervised I wanted to be sure he left it alone.

You are amazing!  I know how hard this recovery is with a little quad-pug, it's hard to imagine how hard it is with a bigger Tripawd!

It should keep getting better from here.

Uhhhhohhhh ... she's mobile! And can get to her staples with the cone on!

Izzy is doing alright but now I'm worried about her being home alone while I'm at work. YIKES! I guess I'll be shopping for doggie pants tomorrow ... bought some online and they don't fit at all. Booooo

Anyway - just a short post. Will update more later 🙂

IZZY!!! You behave yourself!!! Biting at your stitches is a BIG no no!!

Wish I had ato solution. This is scary ro think she could get to them even eith the cone on. Is there anyone at all...or maybe a couple of people...who could take "shifts" watching her?

Ohhhh Izzy! Leave the stitches alone.

We have had to double-cone Wyatt Ray after surgeries, he could do the same thing. We used a cone of shame , along with this big floppy disc. It works like a charm. See if you can find one at a vet clinic nearby.

Hopefully when you're at work all she'll do is chill and sleep. I think that's what most dogs do, we just tend to envision the worst.

Glad to hear things are otherwise progressing for Iz. This isn't an easy thing you're going through together, and we so appreciate your finding time to share the journey inbetween  your very short naps! The experience will definitely help others some day.

Keep us posted.

I made Obie's pants, I called them his jammie pants because they looked like pjs.

Anyway, Obie is pretty small so I bought some little girl tights.  I cut the crotch seam open most of the way around so he could pee and poop with them on and so the top side went over his tail. I also had to open the inner leg seams so they were not too tight. They had elastic in the waist, I added on to it to make the elastic longer and put a toggle on it. That way I could get them over his legs without it being too tight then cinch them up. I also used the elastic/toggle to attach to his harness so they would stay up.

I know I took a picture but I can't find it.  I do still have the pants so if you need I can put them on him and take a pic.  I know Obie would enjoy that!

Thanks, Karen! Actually, after a complete failure with the dog jammies on Amazon, I found some that I think will work on Drs. Foster & Smith. I will take photos once they arrive, but they actually have some made for BIG dogs. I ordered a size up because of Izzy's barrel chest, but I think these could be a godsend for so many on here - I hope they work out like I think they will.

Fatty (Izzy) is back at the vet today. She had a tough night of coughing and hacking. It's like she's got something stuck in her throat and she's lethargic ... this after being quite perky the last couple of days. Hoping it's just a sore throat from the incubation tube ... I'll be sure to post once I know more!

Can't wait to see pics of Izzy in her "jammies"! And Karen, we have to see a pic of Obie in his britches...hope you have one!

Glad you're getting Izzy's cough checked out. Soooo often there is either an irritation from the incubation or kennel cough. She could even have a tiny fever and that could make her lethargic. I would think her muscles may be sore all over again as she adjusts to trying not to bear weight in that leg. This can't be easy in either of you! You are a strong tream!

Izzy spent the day with her most favorite veterinary team and was sent home with Cerenia just in case the "throat clearing" is nausea. She's out like a light and I'll take her out to potty and have a late dinner but she seems ok for now. I'm glad the good doc wasn't overly alarmed and didn't feel like we needed to rush to xrays and antobiotics. In other good news, her incision looks good even though she can lick it with the e-collar on. *sigh* My girl.

Here she is, passed out like a champ!

And another after she switched position ... how is that comfortable?! Especially while healing from a ligament repair?!!!

Thanks or the love, everyone 🙂
