Hello everyone! I am here to give an update on Sammy, who I last wrote about almost 6 months ago, just a few days post-op. The decision to amputate Sammy's front leg, at age 11, due to osteosarcoma, and not to pursue chemotherapy, was a very difficult one, and I truly appreciate all the support I found at Tripawds. We recently moved, and my husband and I both started grad school since I last posted, so I apologize for such a late update.

I am overjoyed to let you all know that Sammy is still going strong! He just had a checkup and was deemed to be in perfect health. At age 12 now, he is continuing to blow us away with how well he is doing. We did not pursue chemo, but he does have a few supplements that I can't recommend enough; turkey tail immune boosting mushroom powder, level 3 glucosamine with chondroitin, and organic bone broth with turmeric (when we can afford it! He took it religiously for the first few months, but it is now more of an every now and then treat). He also occasionally gets salmon oil or krill oil, usually mixed with glucosamine.

We moved to a rental home on a farm with 48 acres of land, and Sammy patrols his fenced acre of land and goes on hikes every weekend. The hikes are short- he averages about a quarter to a half mile, but he loves them and does excellent. I am overjoyed that he can still hike with me, chase quail, and dig up mole hills like a champ.

Here are some pics!

Awwwww I am TOTALLY smiling big over here! big-grin How wonderful to see Super Senior Sammy in all his glory. He is proof that age is just a number and we really cannot base a dog's candidacy for amputation based on that factor alone. You have a total rock star living with you! superstar And your new place sounds like a dog's paradise.

Thanks for the tips about the supplements and bone broth. He's a lucky boy to have such devoted parents making sure he stays healthy and strong.

Whatcha going to grad school for? I'm nosy!

Give Sammy a big ol smooch from me, I'm so happy to know he's doing well. Thanks for the lovely photos. Mind if I put one in the Tripawds Photo Gallery?
