Sunny enjoyed 4 full months of Tripawd hoppiness!  We really enjoyed every moment we could!  He was fast and had adapted wonderfully.

Then...he went suddenly, totally blind.  And now he is having breathing issues.

Sunny was suspected to have the dreaded "Golden Retriever eye disease" Uveitis/Glaucoma, and for about 5 years the vet was watching a spot in his right eye that never changed.

Prior to his leg amputation, he had a red dot in the pupil of his left eye.  It seemed to disappear, however, 2 weeks ago, his right eye developed Uveitis very rapidly and within 24 hours Glaucoma had taken his vision.  His left eye had ultra low pressure but iris was turning red(blood filled?) so we tried to reduce inflammation with some eye drops but that eye blew up with pressure and now he's blind in BOTH eyes.  So Sunny is now a blind Tripawd.

This was very challenging at first, as he learned to trust my guidance that his ONE front foot would land somewhere safe.  He is able to get up and down the 3 steps to go potty, with assistance.  He insisted on going out to the park with us, and would even "jump" up on the truck bumper to be boosted.  He even trusted me when he had to jump out to the ground...with assistance of course.

He was adapting to blindness....THEN in the past few days his breathing has become labored...he has that HACKy cough that I hear described as a symptom of METS from the previous Osteosarcoma.  Last night, it sounded like he was drowning in lung fluid as he waled with each inhale.  I gave him some CBD oil (1000mg) and he settled.  I was sure he would pass away in the night.  Today...he seems somewhat normal.  Breathing is a little labored but no more fluid filled breaths, no more waling.    We are going to try some homeopathic cough remedies recommended here (HomeoPet cough), as well as some lung tumor and eye issue remedies from Dr. Reckeweg (UnitedRemedies.com).

I trust it will be clear when its time for Sunny to transition with or without assistance, in the meantime, he happily goes down the steps, potties and loves to go to my detached office, to continue his job on the "security team".... WE won't give up!  Please pray for Sunshine, he really is a gift to the residents at the nursing home he visits. We hope he will be able to go visit his friends there soon.

I'm so sorry that he is not doing well, poor guy. Thank goodness he is still on security detail!

Is he on any pain medication right now? This is a good time to work with a hospice vet to make sure any pain he is experiencing is being managed. Lung mets are not typically painful, but he may likely be experiencing other issues related to the cancer progression. If you'd like a recommendation for one just let me know, you can PM me your location and I can try to find one for you.

And Sunny is a gift to us too!  What a story of hope and inspawration.  Clearly he is loved and has had, and continues to have exquisite  care.  Yoir devotion is a lovely thing to behold.

My Happy Hannah eventually  had mets too.  As Jerry said, not necessarily  a painful  thing.  She just got more and more tired after minimal hops to go potty. She loved being a couch  potato, so tiring  more quickly  didn't  bother her.  She never developed  a cough.  It did become apparent eventually  though that the large met interfered  with her breathing  to the point she could not sleep comfortably  at all.  The laying down position compromised  her breathing  space too much to sleep.

Sunshine is still being Sunshine  for now and celebrate that.   Continue  to focus on the present just like  Sunshine  is doing.  Spoil with  lots of treats and snuggles!   Had to chuckle knowing that he  clearly enjoys being your Security Team Leader😎

Yes, sending prayers, pawsitove energy and lots of cheering for your amazing  Sunshine👍

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS.   Although I certainly  understand  foing the Holoatic route,  you may want to ask your regular  Vet about Prednisone.   Not a drug anyone wants our dogs to take unless a necessity,  and minimizing inflammation  around a met (which is what Pred does) can help keep Sunshine  comfort and stable.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
