Some of you might remember my boy Razbeg. It’s been roughly a year since I last posted about him, so I decided it’s time for an update. I don’t write here very often, partly because English is not my first language and it’s always more laborious to write in foreign language, but I have visited here regularly, smiled when I have read about tripawds that are enjoying their lives and cried when I have learned about the pups that have passed away. My deep condolences to everyone who have lost their beloved tripawds during this year icon_cry

As a reminder, Razbeg was diagnosed with suspected osteosarcoma on September 17, 2018 and his right front leg was amputated on September 20, 2018. Due to huge open wound next to his incision site we weren’t able to start the chemo until 4 months after the surgery, but because his first biopsy result defined the tumour as fibrosarcoma, we felt that there’s no hurry. Our oncologist was not satisfied with the first biopsy result, though, so another one was made, and this time the tumour was defined as fibroblastic osteosarcoma. We did four rounds of carboplatin and then switched to metronomics (cyclophosphamide).

Razbeg is still doing well. Today is his 21st month ampuversary and he just had his 11th birthday, but he seems younger than his years. It’s not all sunshine, though, as he has lung mets The “good” news is that he’s actually had them for 19 months, but they seem to grow really slowly and don’t cause any symptoms. When I last wrote, I told his lung x-rays had been clear, but that was just making long story short. There was something in his lungs as soon as couple of months after the surgery, but it was so small and unclear that our veterinary team first thought it was most probably nothing. But when the same small, unclear spot kept showing in future x-rays as well, it was clear that there was something, but there was hope it wouldn’t be cancer, since it didn’t grow. Then, last July, after we had switched carboplatin to cyclophosphamide, the spot started to grow for the first time and all hope for it to be nothing serious was gone. In addition, last October another small spot appeared next to the existing one. Having lung mets felt like a shock, although of course I had lived in fear of them all the time. But as I said, he doesn’t have any symptoms yet and they have been growing very, very slowly.

I don’t know the current state of those mets, though, because we’ve had more pressing concerns lately. Despite of being boy, despite of eating diuretics and despite of all other precautions Razbeg got haemorrhagic cystitis from cyclophosphamide this March, after having the medicine for nine months without any problems. And unluckily we are still struggling with the stupid cystitis now, three months after it all began. It has been ups and downs, for couple of times it looked better already, and then the symptoms returned. There was even a fear of bladder cancer: an ultrasound was performed when the problem prolonged and it revealed a mass in bladder wall. Razbeg had to undergo cystoscopy to find out what the mass was, and luckily it is not cancerous. Apparently, it’s just caused by irritation. Razbeg has suspected von Willebrand disease, so maybe that’s why cystitis takes time to heal. The good thing is that the situation is much better now, and even when the cystitis was at its worst Razbeg was very perky and his usual self, so although I know it must have felt very uncomfortable, I don’t think he was in too much pain (he had and still has medication for it, too). The bad thing is that our vets didn’t want him to start using metronomics again before the situation was better, and he was about two and half months without medication for his lung mets. Now he’s having leukeran (chlorambucil). He still doesn’t have any symptoms of those mets and his lung sounds are normal, but I don’t know when we’ll be able to do the x-rays. It’s not only the cystitis that messed up everything, for some reason Razbeg finds taking x-rays very stressful and I have usually been there with him during the procedure, but now because of the corona virus I’m not allowed to go with him. On the other hand, having the x-rays done wouldn’t change anything. He is still in very good condition despite of mets and cystitis and I just have to be very thankful for that and cherish each and every day I get to spend with him.

I just wanted to share this all with you in case Razbeg's story helps others struggling with the same issues.

We hope you all happy summer!!

OH my DOG will his story help, yes indeed! WOW!

CONGRATULATIONS RAZBEG!

I am just dancing a hoppy dance right know, it's wonderful to know that he is overall, doing well and kicking cancer's butt. His story is hopeful on so many levels....among many other things Razbeg is proof that:

  • senior dogs can do well on three legs
  • big dogs can do well on three legs
  • cancer isn't a death sentence
  • cystitis sucks but it can be overcome
  • and dogs can sometimes live long with metastasis, it isn't the end of the journey!

Wow I'm just so happy and thrilled he has gotten such great care. Other dogs like Nitro have had cystitis happen to them and while it sucks, it can be treated and overcome. I'm so glad the treatments are helping.

Thank you so much for thinking of us and returning with a pupdate. Life is so crazy right now and when people take time to share here, it's guaranteed to bring hope to others. You are just as pawsome as Razbeg, thank you! sp_hearticon2

Give him extra smooches and lovin' from us!!!

Thank you, this site has helped us in so many ways sp_hearticon2 I first found tripawds.com when I was nervously waiting our vet appointment and when I already knew what the diagnosis would be, because all the sympoms matched with osteosarcoma. I was so sad in advance, but this site had given me hope, and one of the main reasons I didn't feel afraid to put my boy through the amputation and all that were the inspiring stories I had read here sp_hearticon2

This is not very good video, but it's Razbeg doing some tricks/obedience earlier this spring. It was a hot day and I hadn't shave him yet, so he was feeling quite hot and was not at his best.

This is Razbeg in one of his favourite activities, searching treats. It's from his birthday about a week ago

Welcome back and happy ampuversary, birthday and getting shaved day to Razbeg!!!

He looks great- strong and happy.

Thank you all for your lovely comments sp_hearticon2I'm glad you find his story hopeful and inspirational, as I have found so much hope and comfort from other pups stories here.

This is one more video of him calmly sleeping in his dog stroller . I bought it for him because it can be used also as bike trailer and as I love bicycling, I thought I could take him everywhere by bike. Sadly, although I tried to familiarize him with it with care and by treating him, he doesn't like it much. At the moment he doesn't want to go into the stroller anymore. Quess I need to start the training again.

I almost missed this, so good to hear from you! Razbeg looks wonderful HAPPY AMPUVERSARY!!sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2

I am glad that all in all he is thriving, you really have been tested though, unreal! Your story is so inspiring, it is a story that many should read when they are told their big old dog isn't a good candidate for amputation smiley7

I love watching him looking for treats in the yard. You would never know he is 11... he looks years younger.

Thank you so much for sharing, it really is a special treat sp_hearticon2

Awwwww he is such a good boy! Our Wyatt Ray would never stay calm like that in his stroller, he barks his head off to let everyone know he is coming.

Yeah maybe it's time for some extra treat training to get him to like it again. I sure hope so, strollers are so great for Tripawds. Keep us posted on how it's going and feel free to share more about your amazing Razbeg anytime you'd like!

So much fun looking g at those videos.  Clearly the squeaky toy is his all time favorite.   He really played with it with so much joy

And he is quite masterful at finding  his treats.  Does a methodical search with total focus.  And btw,  love his yard😎

You have done such a good job of caring for Razbeg and making sure he loves life to the fullest!  He really seemed to enjoy showing off his "tricks".  A very smart boy👍He is so hands.  I found myself mesmerized by the gentleness in his facial expressions and in his eyes.

Wow - what a handsome guy Razbeg is and what an inspirational story he has! He's not letting anything slow him down. I really like the video of him snoozing in his stroller - I can't believe he has decided he doesn't want to take mobile naps anymore. Though, nothing i'm sure some tasty treats can't fix. 🙂 Happy 21st month ampuversary and 11th birthday!

Just adding another video, because today we were having a picnic in Razbeg's favourite place, in the garden on Tuomarinkylä Manor. He loves getting there, so he always just runs all the way smiley4 The video itself is horrible, because I'm trying to use a new video editor with very bad success, but Razbeg was having a lovely day, which I wanted to share. His "brother" Myrsky appears in the video, too.
