Tika has slid a little more down hill, once again has rallied. However, I know with each slide down, the rally back won't be as high as before.  We've come to terms with that (I think?)

I didn't realize how hard end-of-life care is on the human.  I think I did better when my grandfather developed Alzheimer's, at least he could still tell me what's wrong, even though I might not have been the person he thought he was talking to at the time.

Tika's fever came back, she was coughing pretty good also, coughing up blood sometimes, other times just mucus.  I developed bronchitis due to change of season and allergies/asthma and boy, we were a cute pair.  We'd look at each other like: "You making fun of me?"

So with the fever, she stopped eating, and then she started refusing water, my husband was out of town so I started to panic, just a little.  I met with our vet, and we decided to go off metacam and start with Prednisone, Baytril (antibiotic for the fever), and for pain, Buprenorphine.  He gave injections of all three on Friday and for the first time, Tika FOUGHT her injections and I was just gone.

So Friday night was rough, Tim got home Saturday, decided to research Buprenorphine and really, really didn't want to give her anymore. The side effects are pretty harsh.  We didn't have to start the Prednisone until Monday so we thought we'd see how things go.

Well, sure enough, the Baytril knocked down the fever and Tika bounced back (mind you, not has high as before) and we spent the weekend riding in the car and taking walks in her favorite areas (nice thing about Kansas, even where we live we can drive about 15 minutes and be in an area that they can run off leash)

So, now we are just doing Baytril and Prednisone (the Buprenorphine is for emergency use only) and the Pepcid and Sufralcate for any stomach upset.  She is eating like a pig and pretty happy, Saturday night we watched Animal Planet (it was shows about dog breeds) just for Tika, she loves watching TV.

And the power of communication: Monday, hubby and I both gave Tika prednisone, I did it after a doctor appointment, he came home early and gave her another two hours later because he didn't read my email.  (Yeah, there was a BIT of a domestic disputeMad, however when I found out I was at the grocery store, I am not allowed at that grocery store anymore Winker)

You can tell she's tired, she refused her walk today.  I did very good for once, I didn't start bawling!  I just took her back in and she laid down and Caya and I took a walk (Caya really, really needed the attention)

BTW--Prednisone and panting, you ain't freaking KIDDING! WOW!  She hasn't coughed, but WOW!  What were other side effects people were experiencing?

I am travelling next week, my husband is worried about me, but I hope Tika will be fine.  My job and coworkers have been more than patient these last several months, but I know their patience must be wearing thin. I do have an emergency plan to get my butt home if needed.

I just realized I'm rambling, it's been a rough week or so, the losses of our friends here at Tripawds and Tika's health have really hit me hard.  I also didn't want to deliver more bad news I guess, now I want to talk and yikes, thanks for listening?!?!!

I still think SUPER TIKA!  but I think she is starting to hear Tazzie and Yoda and Jerry calling to her (especially since I think Yoda is telling her about all the RABBITS!), that comforts me, I know she will be in good company and she will be looking out for all of us.

Oh, Tika says: Wyatt Ray , if you happen to get in touch with your inner wolf, do not share your kill with your pack, the two-leggers aren't very appreciative.  Stupid humans.

My thoughts to you all, I am very grateful to be part of this community. You all help keep me somewhat sane!

--Kim and Super Tika

PS--My friend and I have actually thought that her 22-year-old cat (FOR REAL) and Tika might, just might, outlive all of us.

Super Tika,

I hope that you continue to feel better with the pred and Baytril... buprenorphene isn't a great drug... but when you are in pain... it does the trick!

I hope that things will be OK when you travel next week... Make sure that hubby gets all the detailed instructions... we all know how our hubbies can be... Laugh (no offence guys!Big Blink

Luckily, my family and I have not come to this stage yet with Max.  I don't know how you (or anyone else who's gone through this) can be so strong.  Our love, thoughts and prayers are with you Kim, Tim, Tika and Caya.

You can ramble all you want about Tika — super triapwd extraordinaire.

Regarding your Prednisone side effects question, Jerry's big one was eating. It helped his appetite come back alright, in a big way!

Pred freaked my Mom and Dad out a little. I panted like crazy, ate and drank like crazy, and peed like crazy. Those were about the worst side effects I had. It's a weird drug in that it helps us feel better in some ways but in other ways just puts us into overdrive. I didn't do the buprenorphene but instead just kept on with Tramadol as needed.

Tika, you will always be our Super Girl, no matter what. A warrior princess, and one tough cookie. We've been thinking about you a lot lately. Thanks for the update.

Please don't ever feel that you can't share news with us, good or bad, we are here for you no matter what. Yes, the end of life hospice care is usually even more up and down than the amputation recovery, it's very hard. And oh gosh my Mom can envision that conflict about the Pred, she and Dad had quite a few, ahem, "words," as they dealt with the worst part of my illness. It's OK though, I forgave them, as always.

Your Mom and Dad are doing a good job, aren't they? It ain't easy, that's for sure. Give them a big lick from us OK?

Really? You mean they won't get on their hands and knees and share it with me? Well hah, forget it! I'll have to go catch one on the sly. Stay tuned. . .

I've got a lot to learn. Thanks for the advice Super Tika 🙂

Kim, Husband, and Super Tika,

What did I miss!  You mentioned rambling, but all I saw was love, love, love, and love.  There are many of us who have faced similar conditions and no matter the knowledge that we will outlive them as they enter our lives, we are never realy prepared for the time that they do leave.  You may think SUPER TIKA, but we know its SUPER TIKA for all brave battle that she continues to wage.  Zeus, Yoda, Tazzie, and Jerry will be on the other side to welcome and comfort Tika, but I know that they would rather wait as long as possible.  Tell Tika that if she sees two Standard Poodles (Bright White) that she should go over and introduce herself to Cassy and Sandy (Cassiopeia and Cassandra).  They would like to hear Super Tika's story and share their own.  They came into my life in a single basket (litter-mates) and left just months appart.  Without the belief that I will one day again join them I really could not go on.

For now, we will just continue our prayers for Super Tika and for your entire family.

Almost forgot, Tika just has to hang in there and rally. There are five of us getting ready to celebrate our one year ampuversary and it would not be the same without Tika there to help celebrate.  Unless I have some how recorded someone's date wrong:

November 11, Nova (2008)

November 19, Cherry (2008)

November 23, Max (2008)

November 26, Trouble (2008)

December 9, Tika (2008)

Tika - we all need you!!

Yeah, see the reason there are so many rabbits in Heaven, Tika, is because Yoda put them there - ouch!

No, no, I'm sure those spirit rabbits have their own private Rabbit Heaven, far, far away where they can rest in peace in fields of clover.  Our spirit pups can go haunt-chase some live bunnies instead, which will whip them into good shape to escape real, live predators.  It's a win-win.  And there won't be any clean-up for the humans either - yay!

But, Tika, you can, of course, take your time.  The rabbits, Yoda, and everybody will be there when you're ready.

And by the way, Kim, your "rambling" is always full of wit as well as lots of useful information about meds and treatments and such, so ramble away!

Yoda&Mom united: 9/5/06 …….… Yoda&Leg separated: 6/5/09……… Yoda&Leg reunited: 10/14/09 ……… ……………….………….………….……. Yoda&Mom NEVER separated! …………………….….……....….…… Though Spirit Yoda currently free-lances as a rabbit hunting instructor for tripawds nationwide

That is amazing that five tripawds are so close to the one year mark. That is remarkable. Sounds as though November is a good time to become a tripawd if you have to join the club.

Kim,

I'm sorry to hear that Tika has had another set back and glad to hear she is back up again, even if her high is not quite as high as all of us hope.  Hang in there, Super Tika.  We all need you.  Prayers for all of you.

Wow, WOW.

Obviously Tika was reading the boards while Tim and I went out to grab a bite to eat, because when we came back, she was all about LET'S TAKE A WALK!

It wasn't very long, October Midwest Thunderstorms, yay!, but I actually let go of Tika's leash because I was going to slow for her.  Okay, works for me, go baby go.

Thanks everybody.  I want to be helpful, I want to share my twisted humor, and I really always think of everybody, and I share your stories with everybody also, I just found out that one of my instructors dogs has cardiac cancer and is doing very well. Goes jogging and everything.  It's funny because, he didn't realize that Tika's amputation was due to cancer really. I'm like yeah, we were bored, we just wanted to cut her leg off.

Sheesh!   Evil humor time Little Devil.  Should we dress Tika up like a pirate for Halloween?  ARRRGGGH.  Peg Leg?  Might traumatize the kiddies.

We took some pics, I will work on getting them posted, Tika looks very proud of herself. Like, yeah, baby, look at me!

Thank you everybody, best wishes to you all!

If she is Still going too fast for you, you might need to cut off another leg.

Little Devil

I remember your EHT stories from a summer camping trip. The newbies should search the archives for that one. How did that leg taste by the way? Confused
