Sounds like you're doing a really good job of monitoring him and adjusting pain meds, Etc accordingly.

And when you let Rocco decide he has to pee when it becomes really important, as you can see, he will get up and go out on his own. Just like humans, if you're resting you try and hold it off as long as you can before you hop out of bed and go pee! And no, he doesn't feel like running a marathon yet or having a great big doggy party. He's recovering from major surgery and he instinctively knows he needs to rest. So I know there a couple of theories on whether a dog gets depressed or not, but for the most part the less than perkiness you see is mostly due to needing to rest from the surgery as well as the pain meds kind of delling his personality for now.

As Jerry said, you will see his sparkle return!  It usually starts with with some extra tail wags, or maybe a bark  if someone  knocks on the door,,,,,,,,and then becomes more and more like Rocco!

Oh I did not see the cannabis link. I will review it. It’s the Ruby that my friend  gave me. She is a distributor and told me that it does not say it’s specific for dogs but I could use it on Rocco since it has the pain relief and anti inflammatory as well. Thanks for the wealth of information provided to all of us desperate for guidance.

Thank you Virginia 😆 I am getting the hang of this, I kept saying your pets names instead of yours! All the dog lovers at work are now aware of Tripawds website and the wonderful work being done here. Love you guys!!

Hey you are so welcome, I hope you find the info useful. When it comes down to it, most hemp tinctures are OK for animals as long as they don't have THC in them. In some cases a tiny bit is helpful, but in most, you want to stick to products without it, unless you're being guided by a veterinary cannabis expert (I can connect you with a vet who is one if you want more help in that department at some point).

LOL, Virginia / @benny55 is Sally 🙂 But really, when it comes down to it, we always only remember the pet's names, right?!

Thanks for sharing the word about Tripawds! Love you back!

Today is one week of Rocco’s surgery. He does not want to get up at all I had to make him get up this morning, he is still on the same bed it is already 6 pm and still does not want to get up. Is this normal? Also his appetite decreased I am wondering if it was the CBD. I did not give him any today. I also noticed that today he did not have any panting he has been resting peacefully. Does not seem to be in any pain. Any thoughts?

Checking back over your posts today was the first day he did eat as much?  Still ate, but not as much?  Overall, not too worrisome, especially  if he's still in antibiotic (which I think today is his last dose?).

Sometimes things like this are a matter of doing exactly what you are doing.....eliminate  one thing at a time.  So eliminating the CBD, then having the antibiotic done, may help.

With Vet approval  and if you think the pain is being managed  as you get further away from the surgery,  you may try spreading that Gaba out further apart.  I think now you are at every six hours?  So, for example,  maybe every 8 list to seemof he's a little more alert?

Again, only with Vet guidance.  Obvioisly  if you have any concerns at all, have your Vet take a look at him.

How is the bruising?  Incision  look "okay"?  No drainage,  etc.  Seems hydrated?

Food wise, feed him any and every yummy goodies he'll eat.  Try warm rotisserie chicken, cheeseburgers, scrambled eggs with some bacon, even cheese pizza crust.

Another "trick" is to have someone  he likes to come  over and knock excitedly  on the door, calling his name, coming in a cheeseburger.

I k now it seems like recovery will last fureve.  He does have his sea leg, he has been eating, drinking, pottying.  Jjst not being real perky or spunky yet?,  Do you get a  tail (stub) wag?  Does he show alertness if you open a goody bag and say cookie/treat?

Rocco is a vit of a "mature" dog and is considered  a "large" dog.  They generally aren't  ready to have a pawty this early out. Remember,  Hoomans  would be acting far worse than Rocc at this point!

Continue  being upbeat, confident and crazy happy acting around him.   Try tweaking the pain med a bit (withBet approval)  and eliminating the CBD.

Extra higs!

Aww darn I'm sorry he's not feeling great. So, remember, it's still not a long time at all. What was his activity like before this started? Does anything get him interested in getting up?

Lack of appetite can often be linked to pain even though it seems like he isn't hurting. When did he eat last? Is he drinking water?

Sorry so many questions!

I'm doubtful it's the lack of CBD, but if you can give him his dose in something really super tempting that he'll eat (scrambled eggs, cheese, etc) you might want to see if that will help.

Remember, stay on top of pain control and medications, even if he seems comfortable. Stick to a regular schedule so you can stay ahead of the pain, because it takes twice as long to bring it down if it spirals.

Paws crossed he starts feeling better!

I decided to go to the store and bought a bag of chicken leg quarters which I am currently cooking for him, and he loves better than any dog food I give him. I will mix it tomorrow with veggies. I used to give him eggs before because I had laying chickens but the hawks were killing and eating my chickens I gave up having free range and sold them all. I hate eating store bought eggs now,  I got used to the good ones. 😌 I am being over protective and worried. You two are right this is a major surgery he went through and it is only normal he feels tired not yet himself. When my husband got home he got up and almost ran outside and made us so happy to see him poop and pee 😂. I will give him 1/2 of 1/2 ( .25 ml) of the CBD at bed time, you are right I can’t have him have pain. He is drinking water. Incredibly the bruising has gone down a lot. The scar is dry, clean and did not drain that much only first two days after surgery,  very little not much. Again immensely appreciative of the advice and the listening ear you have given this crying desperate mom!

It was a hit! I found a way to keep him nourished!! 😀   And he did it again all day he did not get up from his bed in my office,  of course close to me always. As soon as his dad got home he jumps up to greet him and please him with a pee and poop 😊. I can see now how he is recovering by sleeping and renewing his cells. He sleeps all day, he is alert when his dad gets home, then again to bed for the night.  Today marked 8th day post surgery. The bruising has gone down considerably we are closer to removing the stitches. He is such a good boy he does not touch the incision at all. I still put on the cone on him when I am outside or not close to him to avoid any mishaps.
