Hello Tripawd Friends -

The description of this group of forums mentions horror stories as a potential topic and, well, I think that's what we have.  As some of you know, Holly, my Tripawd Warrior Princess, has been having a bit of a rough patch over the last few days.  We are in the midst of struggling with watching her discomfort and hoping that we can get past this stage.

Holly has been meaning to write a post introducing the rest of her pack, but she hasn't quite gotten around to it yet.  Unfortunately, we now have to introduce one of the Monkey Butts to you under less than ideal circumstances.  Clyde, a pitbull mix, went to the vet today and was diagnosed with oral cancer.  We don't know yet what kind it is - the vet did an aspiration of his lymph node; if the cancer has already spread there, we should get a diagnosis from that early next week.  Otherwise, the next step is likely a sedated or anesthetized biopsy.  Obviously we don't know much yet, but from what the vet has told us so far, what we do know is that our guy is in trouble.

We have an appointment scheduled with our new BFF, our oncologist, for Tuesday (I'm going to start having my paychecks just direct deposited to the clinic) to start this entire process AGAIN.  At least I have read all of the cancer books, I guess.  I am aware that I am terrified and devastated, but at this point I am mostly just in shock.  I absolutely cannot believe that this is happening.

I am so glad to have found this site.  During the past few weeks, as we have started down this road with Holly, the information has been invaluable and the support maybe even more so.  The sense of community here is just wonderful - from Crystal's mom's helping me think through potential heart problems to the fact that I have Baby's Power Mushrooms sitting on my kitchen counter, I am just blown away.  As the tripawd, Holly will obviously continue to be the main character on her blog etc., but I am so glad to have this resource for cancer information as we move forward with Clyde.  I can't thank you all enough for welcoming us into your community.

And now, a little bit of the good stuff...the pics! winker

here is the Clyde:

 and Holly & Clyde together:

(Holly would like to speak up here and say that this picture should in no way imply that she likes Clyde.  She doesn't want you to get the wrong idea.)

Just a couple of months ago on a hike, back before all of this...it seems like forever ago.

Alex, I'm just as stunned! And so very, very sorry. Geez. Dealing with cancer once is bad enough, but twice at one time? Aggh!

How did you know there was something going on? Did you see a spot? I'm so paranoid about this now, especially after ModPawd etGayle posted about oral melaonma here

Paws crossed that this can be treated, and that Holly gets her spunk back really soon. Whatever happens with Clyde, and Holly of course, remember we are here for you. I hope we can help make this better!

{{{{hugs}}}}

Oh No! We are so sorry to read about our friend Clyde! Please keep us posted on the test results!

Spirit Samson was Spirit Tripawd Daisys four legged "brother" and ruled as the self proclaimed head of the Monkeybutt Federations East Coast Division. Lady Chunky Monkey stayed from Oct 2011 and left for the bridge in Apr 2012. Miss Perdy is left and has some big pawprints to fill.

Oh my goodness, how overwhelming. I hope the onc has good options/news for you.

Hang in there. Sending pawsitive thoughts out to the whole pack,
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I'm sorry Alex- I can tell you from experience that oral cancer is tough.

Maggie survived her mast cell cancer for 4.5 years if you go back to the first tumor, she made 3 years and 9 months after amputation.  I lost her to oral melanoma.  We did have some extenuating circumstances, she also was dealing with kidney failure (and the mast cell) so our treatment options were limited. I did not think she would survive a surgery so we really could not treat it.

Gayle fought oral melanoma too- I think she survived 11 months after her first diagnosis.

Sorry- I don't mean to just throw bad news your way- but I believe in knowing what you are up against- if it is melanoma.

And- Maggie did have lymph system involvement when her leg was amputated.  She was given 6 to 9 months after that.  You never know what will happen.  Stay positive and hope for the best.

Let us know what we can do to help.

Thanks, everyone, for the encouraging words and positive thoughts.

Our first sign of a problem with Clyde was a swollen lymph node. Unfortunately, his tumor is pretty far back in his mouth and so very difficult to see.

Karen - I'm very grateful for anyone with experience or knowledge sharing. I agree, I much prefer to know what I am up against...throughout this whole thing, I have wanted to learn everything that I possibly can.

Unfortunately, we weren't really able to spend time today getting used to the idea of clyde's news. Holly had a terrible day - it started out ok...this morning she walked downstairs on her own and was very cheery, in good spirits. She has declined rapidly throughout the day to the point that she can barely stand or take more than a step or two on her own. Her legs are incredibly weak, even her front one is bad all of a sudden. Fortunately, it seems to be just weakness - she doesn't seem to be in any more pain than she has been over the last couple of days...because of this we didn't take her to the emergency vet tonight. I fear this may be her heart, in which case there is nothing that the dr can do for her. We decided it was best to just let her rest and relax at home tonight then take her in tomorrow if there isn't improvement. Maybe they will magically tell us that it's something that they can help her with, but I'm not optimistic and we may be approaching decision time. For now, we carried her upstairs and put her on our bed so that we can snuggle and love on her as much as possible.

I am nowhere near ready.for this. I thought we had more time, and I hope we still do, but tonight, even though I told her I'm not ready and I want her to stay a little longer, I also told her that it's ok to go if she needs to.

Please continue to send pawsitive thoughts - we need all the help we can get!

I am sending you lots of pawsitive thoughts.  I hate the way things can creep up on us or jump out at us and catch us by horrible surprise during this journey.  I don't need to tell you to treasure each precious moment with Holly.  Cuddling up to our beautiful furbabies is so heavenly. Remember, there is time later to succumb to fear and feel the pain. For now, truly enjoy and savour the moments you have with Holly.  Don't let cancer take that away from you.

I wish I knew why sometimes the universe throws such awful curveballs like this, I'm so sorry. We're here if you want to vent.

Suggle your fur kids like crazy today, and give them lots of smooches from Tripawds. Paws crossed that Holly bounces back.
