I just joined today!

I have just adopted a Tripod that we will be picking up over Memorial Day weekend!

On May 11th we lost our beloved Doc to Osteocarcoma cancer.   He was not a a good candidate for an amputation,  due to having advanced and severe arthritis in his good legs.   He spent 5 years in a cage as a captive blood donor dog before we adopted him.   If you would like to know about his life -  I posted a tribute to him on the Greytalk (greyhound forum) board:   Here's a link to his story:

http://forum.gr.....999-51111/

We have decided to bring in a new Greyhound to help heal our hearts,  and to be a companion to our other Greyhound,  Rainy.   The same adoption group - Grateful Greyhounds - that we originally adopted Doc from - had this lovely black Greyhound on their site that they have been trying for months for to find a home for.   He is a tripawd boy,  having lost his rear leg from a severe racing injury.   He is pictured on my Icon.  Once we get him home and I get some photos I'll be sure to post them.

His racing name is Solitary Trigger,  but we are going to change his call name to "Gus" - after Robert Duvall's - Agustus McCrea in Lonesome Dove.   Our plans are to train Gus to be a TDI therapy dog,  Like our Rainy is.   We will be having a GUR (Greyhound Underground Railroad) to bring him home from New York State over Memorial Day weekend.    We will pick him up in Ohio and bring him the rest of the way home to Mid-Michigan.

I am looking forward to meeting every one here on this board & learning more about how to make Gus's life the best it can be!

Hi Cory,

Welcome to Tripawds!

You are awesome for adopting Gus.  I'm sure you will find that you did not adopt a 'handicapped' dog- just a special boy!

And be sure you get the tripawd discount if you get him groomed- after all there is less to wash, and only 12 nails to trim big-grin.

I'm looking forward to more pictures.

Welcome to Tripawds, and equally important - Thank you for adopting a 'special' dog. We look forward to many great stories about Gus.

Also, my condolences for the loss of Doc & Pup to Osteo.  My own angel was tripawd as a result of the dreaded disease.

Hi Cory! Welcome! Before I forget, I want to say "amen" to Dan's observation that you aren't dealing with OSA. And another "amen" to everyone else saying thanks for bringing home a special friend. Let's just say "amen" a whole bunch!

Dakota lost his left front leg to a soft tissue sarcoma (spindle cell) in February. We don't have to worry about some of the OSA issues (chemo, mets) that many others here do, but we also deal with arthritis and OCD and weirdness. There are so many different paths represented here, all on the same journey of hope and love, so be sure to start reading some blogs to see who is here. And since you have a 4-legged dog, you may have a monkeydog! If so, we surely hope to hear about those adventures! If you haven't found out about monkeydogs yet...you will. Probably before the end of the day!

Shari and Dakota (and Evelyn, probable monkeydog)

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Dakota's thoughtful and erudite blog is at http://shari.tr.....pawds.com/

Hello and bless you!

My heart ached when I read Doc's story.  I can't imagine what all of those years were like for such a special "talkative" boy.  It must have been true torture.

I am thankful to you for taking him in and making his last years the best any dog (or person) could ask for!

I look forward to reading about Gus, and all his adventures, thank goodness that his isn't a diagnosis of cancer, yay!!!

Welcome 🙂

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

Hooray for Gus winning the doggy lotto! Sounds like he will have a great home and you will have a very special new family member. (Gus is one of my all time favorite literary characters. Our family used to have an Aussie shep named Woodrow.)

Sorry for your loss of Doc. I look forward to hearing about Gus's tripawd adventures!

Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Welcome Gus! You've got some pretty pawesome pawrents there, you SCORED! It took a while to find the right family, but now you did. Congratulations! And we're so glad you came here to meet us, thanks.

Yesterday we met some Greys at an adoption event, and my Mom just fell in love. You pups are such mellow dudes! Even crazy Wyatt Ray mellowed out around them, and that's saying something.

We read Doc's story. Wow, it made us cry. What's this thing about captive blood donors? We had no idea and are clueless about that. It sounds terrible! Thank Dog for pawesome pawrents like yours Gus, they are very special people for helping Greys like you and Doc. We're sorry he left this earth too soon.

Anyhow, can't wait to follow along with your adventures, especially your therapy dog experience. Do consider starting a Tripawds dog blog!

And, get this, we have other Michigan members! They just had a pawty, check it out. be sure to get in touch with them so you can be a part of the next big event.

Thanks for stopping by Gus & Family, we're so glad you did!

And tell your folks "Thanks" for creating tags for your Forum post! We really appreciate that.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

We are so excited to be adding Gus to our family.   I have been in contact with his foster family,  and I hear there isn't a dog or kitty he doesn't like.   He had his amputation surgery in December,  so he's now very used to being Tripawd,  and his foster mom said that the way he runs and plays,  he doesn't even miss the leg.    He had a pretty good race career before his injury- had 55 races under his belt.

What is this 'monkey-dog" thing?   laughing    My little brindle girly,   Rainy -  I always tell her she has a monkey tail - since it is so very long and thin and she likes to curl it around while we play with it.   The children who read to her at the area libraries for the Dog Tales program call her the "tiger dog" - due to her being a red brindle with black tiger stripes.    I've been teasing her that she's going to soon be a "cougar"  because she's 11 years old,  and Gus is just a "boy-toy" at 4 years old  .... aw-shucks       So can the tiger dog,  turned cougar - also be a monkey dog?

What do you think?    Tiger dog?   Cougar?   Monkey dog?        (yay -i figured how to post a photo!)

You guys will have to bring us up to speed with what classifies a dog to have the "monkey dog" title.    She does like bananas  ...

I have started a blog that I will be keeping track of Gus's progress as we train him to be a therapy dog.

See the Official Monkeydog Classification for details, but more importantly if Gus has any pack-mates, be sure to check out the Anti MonkeyButt Force!

I have started a blog that I will be keeping track of Gus's progress.

We'll announce Gus' blog as soon as you publish your first post. Check out the Help videos if you need help getting started and consider adding a link to Gus' blog in your signature (from your Profile button at top).
