Atlas already has a pressure soar on his elbow that is bleeding. The hospital said he choose to lay on the concrete floor instead of the bed so it was pretty bad when we brought him home yesterday. We kept worrying cause we kept seeing the bloody spots on his bedding but we now know its from the pressure soar not the incision. I called our regular vet and he gave us some silvadine to apply. Trying to get it under control before it becomes chronic. Any tips?
Thanks again everyone for you valuable insight, it helped me to back off and let him find his way. Also, very good reminder about the dopey drugs. Atlas doesn't do we'll on pain meds, when he was on them a couple years ago after a cyst removal he became very wobbly but as soon as he was off them he regained his balance. Here's looking forward to a couple weeks when his true self can shine through!
Check this older thread for links to different ideas on how to deal with elbow hygromas. This is a common occurrence in front amps as lots of weight and pressure is applied to the one elbow.
I hope Atlas continues to progress- and you will see that sparkle return soon!
Karen
Atlas is doing good today although a little more wobbly this morning. We can clearly see its the back right leg that has a mind of its own (wobblers) but Atlas doesn't let it get him down, he just perseveres and did another great poopy walk without incident and with harness assistance. He seems to do better once he gets warmed up and I think he'll do even better when off the pain meds. I picked up the food bowls and took them to the laundry room/doggie supply room which is only about 10 feet from his room and forgot to close the gate behind me and guess who's big ole head was poking in staring at me....come on mom, you finished yet, I'm hungry.....yep, Atlas had followed me without me even knowing and got down to business as usual...begging for food. After I fed them I had to go outside and let out this huge burst of tears. It was so comforting to have just the normalcy and for that moment there was no amputation, no cancer, just the normal feeding routine. You all were so right about the blessings we learn to cherish the moment. I'm getting better at it and so is worry-wart dad.
Karen thanks so much for the link to the elbow pad info - Marc researched last night the best one for Atlas. I have to share with you guys how amazing that Silvadine cream is.....in just 24 hours it has practically healed the elbow sore....granted we caught early, but that stuffs amazing! Now we just protect that elbow as best we can from future damage.

AND THE CROWD CONTINUES TO CHANT: YAY ATLAS!! YAY ATLAS!!!
Your mom and dad are doing such a great job!
Atlas is clearly figuring tings out and starting to settle into his own pace. He will continue to show more and more "normalcy" shine through in his daily routine. Yeah, if he wants to get up and follow you to his "dining area" then let him. He likes the feeling of the normalcy too:-)
Now, in NO way do I have any insight into wooblers, but unsteady and shakey leg are also normal in some dogs after surgery....so, could be that too.
You are just going to continue beaming iwith pride at every glorious sparkle that continues to come back:-)
Love the updates and love more pictures of the Mighty Handsome Atlas! Best wishes to all,
Sally and Happy Hannah

I love hearing about the progress he's making. If you've never been through it you'd never believe that a dog as big as Atlas could do it, but there he is!
Glad the elbow sore is healing up. May each day get better and better.

Atlas is one week post op and doing really good. His vet said to start decreasing the tramadol so he is getting 3 tabs x 3 times daily now. The first 12 hours after adjustment from 4 tabs to three - he was very quiet and slept a lot. Today he has more balance and more clarity in his eyes. He is also sleeping more quietly and not chasing so many psychedelic squirrels! He moves from bed to bed throughout the day finding where he's most comfy. Usually about five times a day so I figure that's good mobility for now and he does it all without assistance! Still does his little circle nest making before he lays down - even on three legs! Last night was a totally normal night for our family - mom and dad watching a movie with all four fur kids laying about. Got some good pictures and posted to the blog, lets see if I can upload them here.....
Also got started with paperwork for the physical therapy and acupuncture rehab facility. I can see clearly that core strengthening will aid Atlas long term.
Patricia, Atlas is having a stellar recovery! You don't know that because this is your first amputee (thankfully), but he's doing exceptionally well. If you want to do a little med comparison, ask others how long their dogs were on pain meds. You will be surprised; most of them not nearly as long as you'd think. Dakota had tramadol and a low dose of Deramaxx for 11 days. He continued taking a low dose of Deramaxx for most of his life, but he took it before surgery for arthritis. I think Dakota was taking a single tramadol every 12 hours for the last 2 days. Pretty amazing, huh?

Hi Patricia...just watched the Atlas videos here on the Tripawds.com site, after seeing your Atlas as our Tripawd Tuesday fella on Facebook. Have to say, the videos caught me off guard because I did not expect him to be so bouncy and full of life and hopping around like nobody's business. Not being a professional vet or anything, I don't know what to look for in "Wobbler's Disease" but these videos look like one huge happy tripawd having a romp with his mates. Please keep us posted as life goes on in your world. And please give Atlas a huge Atlas size hug from all of us tripawds! Best to you all, John Wayne (cattle dog tripawd) and human mom Jana
