Many people leave their dogs alone within the first week of recovery. But every dog is different. If Roman is not licking or exhibiting other nervous behavior, and you have him confined to a "safe room" he should do fine if you leave him plenty of water.

After Skyler had surgery to remove a mast cell tumor, we confined her to the finished basement area. Since there were couches there, we didn't want her to jump up onto it and get hurt. We put her in the pen that we had used when she was a pup, and kept her sister Chloe upstairs. Since we knew Skyler would be a licker, we put a soft-coated e-collar on her too. We went home every day at lunch time to let her out, and to give her a break from the collar. Thankfully we only did this while she had her staples in (2 weeks).
Please keep us posted on your progress. What type of dog do you have? Why did he have surgery?
Sending you lots of golden hugs!

I had similar concerns with Zack. We used a tshirt that kept his staples covered, so I wasn't worried about that as much as him falling and not being able to get back up. I work about 12 miles from home, so I bought 2 wireless Internet cameras and would check on him periodically, planning to run home if I needed to. Luckily, the cameras were more for my peace of mind than anything else – Zack's routine didn't change much after the surgery – he still took his day-long naps while we were gone.
Zack, King of Dogs, 1996 to 2010
Zack lived a full 14 years, even to the end.
The joy and memories he provided us will last a lifetime.
Surviving him is his sister, Izzy, a 12-year-old boxer mix quadpawd.
And the latest addition, Zula, an 11-month-old pit bull mix tripawd.
Welcome to Tripawds! I'm so sorry about your pup!
We are all Nervous Nellies, so don't feel bad! Did I miss his name?
Keep us posted on the progress!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Welcome to Tripawds!
Being nervous is par for the course, everypawdy is at first, until they see how PAWESOME their dogs handle life on three legs.
If you kept a web cam on him I'll bet you'll find that he sleeps all day long!
We recommend baby gates, crating, or whatever can keep a patient in one room while you're away, at least for the first couple of weeks.
Good luck! Do tell us more about your fur kid when you get a chance.

Sorry it's taken so long to get a reply up. Roman did fine alone, he wears the cone and a t-shirt. I leave around 8 every morning and come home for a half hour at lunchtime to check on him, Mon-Fri. I was hoping once his staples were out he could go back outside during the day but he developed a pretty bad seroma at 2 weeks post-op and its still about dime size(at its largest it was half dollar size) and draining, its getting smaller every day but I wont leave him out until its completely healed. So I probably have another few days of lunchtime visits ahead of me! He had his first walk today and didn't want to stop!
