Hi all. I found this site while Toby is still at the vet recovering from having his left rear leg amputated. I’m putting off calling to check on him this morning but I can’t wait to see him again. He’s my buddy and my shadow.
This was a hard decision for me but when I went to my family (wife and 2 teens) it was a no-brainer to them. I am most nervous that I won’t be able to give him what he needs. I know he’s going to handle this like a champ and probably end up helping me get through it.

Thank you so much for this group. It has helped calm me a lot as I sat by the phone yesterday and last night. I’ll keep you posted about our journey.

More soon.

Michael

Hi and welcome. You have definitely found the right place for any questions and support!

I was very nervous when my lab of almost 12 had surgery, but he took it like a champ just as I am sure Toby will.

Would like to learn more about Toby. Keep us posted.

My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019.  With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer.  I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud!  He will live forever in my Heart!

Hi again. Just received a call from our veterinarian. Toby will be ready to come home about 4pm! (We're in NC.) Excited and nervous and scared and lots of stuff.

We rescued Toby on April 1, 2013, so he's almost exactly 8! Of course he was several weeks old at the time. He's a "boxer-mix" which to me, means he's brown. Toby had a lot of trouble as a puppy with too much energy. We estimate he ate 1000's of dollars worth of equipment and Amazon packages. At about a year old, we sent him away to training school for a month and that has made all the difference. He's such a big part of our family and since I work mostly from home, he's usually at my feet under the desk.

More updates soon.

Thanks for the support!

YAY Toby is coming home! That's pawesome!

It's normal to be nervous and scared. Just remember that you will set the tone for recovery. The more pawsitive and hopeful you are, the more he will reflect that right back to you.

Toby sounds like tons of fun! 😉 He's still got a lot of fun ahead of him, what a lively guy. I love that you guys are so dedicated, and that his eating obsession is under control. We had similar issues with our Wyatt Ray .

Enjoy seeing him again! Remember, recovery is only temporary. He will get his sparkle back before you know it.

Just a quick update. He’s much better than I thought he would be. He pretty loopy from the medicine but seems happy to be home. He’s given all four of us a tail wag and has peed twice already. He ate a half can of dog food (vet said he was only taking about 1/3). And he’s slept. A lot. Can’t blame him for that one.
My teenagers have really stepped up too. So he knows he’s loved and is making us proud.

I’ll figure out pictures soon and get those posted. Thanks for the directions!

WELCOME HOME TOBY!!!  Yes.he clearly knows he is loved♥️

And YAY for eating and peeing!!  May take a few days to poop.

He still jas so e good hospital  pain meds jn him, sl of he crashes I  a day or two, don't  be alarmed.  That's  when tweaking his pain meds becomes important.

Right now, rest, rest, rest, short leashed potty breaks and more rest.  May take him a few days to get his sea legs, that's  okay.

Stay connected and let us know as any questions arise.  Recovery is no picnic fof ppr a week or two, but it doesn't  last furever,

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Wow that's terrific! I'm so glad he's got such a great team of nurses. Like Sally mentioned, don't be surprised or panic if he's less enthusiastic in the coming days. His body is exhausted from surgery and he needs time to adjust. He probably won't poop for a few days too, that's not uncommon.

As long as he has good pain control he should do just fine. What medications did he come home with?

Welcome.  You have found a great community to help you out.  Love the pictures of Toby.  Best thing for him is rest.  Try not to let him do too much.  Over doing can set ya back in healing.   Also don't hesitate to ask questions if you have them.

My piece of advice right now is to make sure to stay on top of pain meds.  This right now is going to be the toughest part.  How much is the right amount.   Don't hesitate to call your vet and have dosage adjusted if you think  he needs it.  Ask them questions they are a good support as well.

A very handsome boy! He went from an adorable puppy to a stunning adult.

Glad to see he's resting comfortably and hope you are able to get some sleep too. It's exhausting getting to this point physically and mentally.

Thanks everyone. I decided to sleep on the couch tonight so I’d be close if he needs me. Really we are probably going to stage a “Who can snore the loudest” contest! He seems to be comfortable right now so I’ll get some sleep too until he needs me.

Have a good night.
