WOW... such great suggestions! I know this isn't about a "Tripawd" but I am eternally grateful for the epic and collective wisdom of you all.

Great suggestion about extending our walk a little bit... I had treats w/me at the beach but she wouldn't take them. :-( But I'll walk her down the hill tonight - not to the beach but a block further than we usually go.

The paper towels last night did smell of pee, a bit. But the area that was saturated was also under a piece of furniture so that is why this a.m. I suspected the cleaning spilled something too. maybe she discovered the pee and tried to clean it up?

I ordered the calming stuff today online (thank you Carol) and I will look into a vest for sure.

I am also looking into some obedience classes for her (to help us possibly bond AND train her).

The beach is so peaceful to me but who knows ...sensory overload for sure (again, those huge a$$ ears).

If you all could hear what my mother is saying to me in the back of my head .. that little voice that says (and has said since I was young), "Patience, donkey, patience".... not sure where the donkey part came from BUT patience is definitely not in my vocabulary!

I think your Mom is just too nice in her choice of words. The story is The Thirsty Donkey, and the man keeps saying, Patience, Jackass, Patience. LOL!

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

LOL!!! I am pretty sure my mom didn't want to say "jackass" to a 4 year old but you never know ... 🙂

We did walk a bit further tonight and she was a brave girl and I praised her - in Spanish - the whole way. And gave her cookies! I wish she spoke more English but for tonight, it was "beuno senorita, beuno, Jasper, muey bueno senorita"... the Mexican lady with the baby carriage probably thought I was a nut job!

I love that you're speaking to her in Spanish! Now that's commitment!

Btw....The stain remover I was trying to remember....Bac Out by Biokeen

It is SOOOOOOO ooh Clear Jasper Lily is FULL of life lessons for you! Hopeful k , the trade off will be some day she will get to know what love feels like.

PATIENCE and using that wonderful unbridled energy in a way that builds confidence, stability and certainty in Jasper ' s scared little wise soul......yeah, a lot of life lessons for both of you.

Adventures with Jasper wil L happen......you're already having some...it's just that the ones you and Jasper are on are the ones the Universe picked for you because the Universe.....and Shelby.......know exactly what they are doing!

And maybe next time Jas' en gets so scared at the beach she climbs in n your .ap.....go ahead and give her a little hug and gentle energy of safety......that's not "enabling" that's bringi g comfort to a scared and frightened little soul who turned to you for reassurance. Work with her through her fears as a friend would help another friend.

Love to you Alison...always!

Well I may have mis-spoken about her peeing.... that large patch of carpet is still really saturated and I suspect that there might be a pipe that is either leaking or burst. I live in an upstairs apt but the guy who parks under me has noticed water dripping on his car for sometime. Our 'slum-load' landlord didn't think anything of it and didn't notice a leak when he checked my apt about 2 months ago. But there is no real other explanation for it still being SO wet that I have real towels on it and they are stinky and damp. Grrrr.

Not saying she didn't pee but perhaps she's not 100% responsible for this. And that it's under furniture too. What a mess!

On another note ... I am starting to get used to and even 'enjoy' having Jasper in my casa... she has made herself very much at home and was a very good girl on her walks yesterday. Very brave.

So last night... told Jasper "time for bed" and I went into the other room, expecting her to follow me and I came back and saw this - she put her babies to bed! That's pretty darn cute if you ask me!

Oh Jasper Lily ... you're trying so hard! I'll try and meet you half-way!

That is ridiculously cute!!

I typed up a response for you about Obie yesterday, but lost it when I stupidly went to check something in the forums without opening a new browser tab... doh!  I need more sleep!

Anyway- yes, Obie is better.  Unfortunately his eyesight is very poor, he is almost blind in bright sunlight, so that will forever hinder his progress.  However, he is hugely food motivated.  When there are snacks to be had he overcomes almost all his fears. How does JL do with food? As others have suggested treats can go along way.  When we are out walking I will tell him people and/or dogs are approaching, that keeps him from being startled (eyesight issue).  And at home I try and tell him 'loud noise' before I make one, and 'overhead' before I move something over him.  He may not understand the words (or he might, he knows lots of words) but he doesn't cower or duck.

I have turned into that crazy lady always talking to her dog. Couple that with pushing Tani in the stroller... but I digress.

Obie is the oddest pug I've known, I've had them for 15 years, and they have been part of my extended family for much longer than that. The last dog I had before Maggie was a huge newfie mix, but my life was much different then.  I started with pugs because they were small but not yappy, didn't need a ton of exercise but are pretty robust.  I used to take the pug girls up to the lake, we would walk 2 or 3 miles and they were in and out of the water, chasing each other through the grass, being dogs.  Obie doesn't like grass, in fact I think he is allergic, he doesn't like water or getting his feet wet.

I guess my point is that you may not know for months or years how Jasper Lily will be with you. Obie has been with me four years now. It's been tough sometimes, but so rewarding to see him gain some confidence and leave his awful past behind.  He will never be comfortable around a lot of dogs or strangers so I have had to adapt to him, and for me that is OK.  It may not be for you. Don't force it with Jasper Lily, but do give her time enough to get comfortable with you and her new surroundings.  As others have said- baby steps.

I have no experience in this whatsoever as I've only ever had to train very little puppies that were never housebroken, but I just needed to chime in here bc that is THE CUTEST PIC EVERRRRRRRRRRR

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. First of all, congratulations on taking this step!!  She is very cute (what a face!) and given time, you will find your routine with Jasper Lily.

Boomer is what my very good friend would call a "chicken-baby".  That's what she called all the fearful dogs that would come visit her at her coffee shop when I still worked at the sanctuary.  It sounds like Jasper might be a bit of one, too.  While house training wasn't really an issue with Boomer (he had a few accidents in his crate when I first got back to Ohio, but that was his separation anxiety) new places continue to be a problem for him.  He is more confident now than he used to be but anytime we go someplace new, I have to be extra aware of the surroundings.  He is nervous of the typical stuff, bikes, skateboards, etc, but he is also really scared of children, so if it is a park where there might be kids, I always have to keep an eye out for any approaching kids.  Fortunately, Amy thinks kids are the bees knees, so she usually runs interference while Boomer hides behind me.  I think someone has already mentioned it (I skimmed the other posts, but not in detail) but let me just reiterate, Thundershirts ROCK!  Boomer and Amy share one, she wears it during thunderstorms and he wears it when my nieces are visiting, he's going to the vet, or doing anything else that might send him into panic mode.  They are effective with about 80-85% of dogs.  We sell them at the store where I work and we rarely get returns on them (and a lot of times, returns are because people have unrealistic expectations of what the shirt will do).  It is very rare that a Thundershirt will miraculously make a dog act "normal" when you put it on them but it will help diminish the severity of the fear response.  For example, when we have storms, Amy gets really nervous and restless, she can't find anywhere she feels safe.  When I put the Thundershirt on, she isn't relaxed and she still won't eat, but instead of searching the house for the perfect safe place and relocating every 2-5 minutes, she is able to find a spot and just hunker down and wait for the storm to pass and once it is gone, she recovers much faster.  She isn't her usual self, but her fear is much more manageable.  You might find that with a Thundershirt, Jasper will still startle at loud noises, but she won't shake and she will take treats.  She doesn't know you that well yet, but keep in mind that if you are acting normal, she will read that from your body language and act accordingly.  If you baby her and worry over her when she gets nervous, that reinforces the behavior.  I never baby Boomer when he gets scared - I am proactive on his behalf and if I see a situation that I know will send him over the edge, I do what I can to help him through it.  Kids often want to pet him because he is just so handsome big-grinbut I will tell them that he is pretty scared of kids so they can say hi to him from a few feet away but he would be happier if they didn't pet him.  I always let people pet him if he approaches them but I let him tell me when he is comfortable.  When you are out walking with her, if she gets scared because you are too close to the beach or another scary location, move away from the area, but don't take her straight home - maybe go back a block and then go north or south a block or two, or go past your house and walk another block in the opposite direction.  Expanding a dog's comfort zone can take a lot of baby steps but over time you'll get there.

As for the house training, it sounds like if there is a burst pipe, there might not be such an issue there after all.  But as several people have said, keeping her tethered to you is probably the fastest approach and I wouldn't use pee pads because once she gets used to using them, you will then have to train her to stop using them.  Poochie Bells can help in the training process too.  We have lots of customers who swear by them (they are bells on a ribbon that you hang by the door and jingle them each time you take the dog out for potty breaks and eventually dogs figure out that they can jingle the bells themselves to let you know they need to go out - it sounds a little silly, but they do work for a lot of dogs).

Such a cute picture. Jasper Lily looks so darn proud of tucking her babies into bed. If your local pet stores do not carry Thundershirts, I saw them today at Bed Bath and Beyond. Do not know for sure if they are a nationwide chain, just wanted to pass that on. Glad you had a good day with her. Love from, Lori and Ty
