It hit us a few days ago: without amputation, there'd be little hope that Jackson would be in our lives 3 months after finding his tumor. Well, we amputated (no hesitation to do so) and we would do it all over again. Today our 3-legged star is with us and is as good as ever! We love him TONS and are SO PROUD of his progress, spirit, attitude, and preservation of his (super-) quality of life. We love you, J-Pod! Keep on being a J-Hole, in your funny, obstinate way!
To celebrate, we head north to New Hampshire for the weekend. This will be huge. It was up in New Hampshire, where his grandpawrents live, where cancer was found and amputation occurred. For those that don't know the story: I brought Jackson up there a few days before my husband and I were to spend 2 weeks in Europe, just prior to Christmas 2012. The day before we left, Jackson comes inside (my parents have a ton of land and J's not a wanderer, so he goes in/out without a leash whenever he wants...which is ALL THE TIME) holding his right rear leg up to his hip. He'd been limping on that leg for a bit, but we'd been medicating it and monitoring his activity. Well, that night, he finally tore the whole ACL. That diagnosis required an ER visit at 2am (BTW - I'm leaving out all my tears of stress, emotions, frustrations, confusion about leaving him while on vacation....I was a basket-case), as I didn't want to leave J with my parents for 2 weeks w/o a diagnosis and drugs. Once stabilized and drugged, I left J up there and came back to CT to fly to Europe with my husband. It was during our trip that we emailed with my mother's vet about his ACL repair and surgical costs, needs, etc. We booked the repair Sx (with an ortho specialist) the very day after we'd get home, that way we could begin ACL-repair recovery at their home, over the holidays, with only 2 stairs inside/outside (vs our 12 here). We had a great time in Europe (Spain and Italy)! The day we were heading north, we of course got a call from the vet, but the phone call wasn't what I was expecting: it was in those pre-op xrays they found the tumor. His tumor was weakening his knee, which lead to the partial and final tear of his ACL. So that Sx was canceled and we began prep for amputation. What a homecoming! What a Christmas and New Year's! A week later, right after Christmas, Jackson had his leg removed (by the same ortho specialist - WOW, what a surgeon! He came in during his week off to take J's leg!) and recovery began up with my parents. So you see, he's not been able to tear up those woods for months. Tonight is going to be epic. Beware, chipmunks! Jackson's coming to terrorize you! I still fear the way he moves he's going to injure his other legs or rear knee. But, this is His Life. He's an active boy. Restricting him is not giving him the life he deserves. It makes me all teary now just thinking about the life we've been able to maintain and give him (back) over these 3 months. Please PLEASE let there be 30+ more months!

(Yep, he got a cookie after every one of these shots! See the Pi on his chest? He's a nerdy mom's dog for sure!)
ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!

Dear Sweet Katy and Sweet Jackson!
Sooooooo glad to here about all the celebration planned and what a wonderful time everyone will be having
Katy, make no mistake, your positive, joyous, unlimited optimism contribute greatly to Jackson's victories and I hope you take time to give yourself a pat on the back too!
You, like everyone here, contribute so much and are always supportive. You and I joke about my computer skills(?) or lack there of---so, in honor of Jackson I've tried to type an error free congratulations (and it's only taken fifteen minutes)!!!
You are such a champion and he knows he's adored! Love the close-up mug/nose photo.
Enjoy the party, Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Ampuversary to the rockin' Winter Warrior, Jackson! I never knew the full story....wow! I love the nose level picture.
Have a wonderful weekend giving the chipmunks and tree rats a run for their money! I'm so happy for all of you.
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
Ahhhh, pawshucks everyone! Thanks! We're having a great time! He's loving every minute of being up here. We've taken a nice walk in the crisp air and that's after he's come in/outside like 100x already! He's enjoying all the new treats and his favorite toys that remains at the grandpawrents' house. He's living it up!

OK, folks, Jackson had an EPIC weekend! He chased. He fetched. He was off leash 80% of the time. When on leash, it was for walk with his cousin, who is pretty arthritic. That was kinda dumb, b/c we had to go slowly and we all know slow is hard for tripawds. Between that 20min walk and all his vertical, off-leash time, he's hurting. Well, no yelps or whines, but I can tell he's stiff and kinda achy. He's resting and doesn't express any interest in his toys now that we're home. Instead of giving him more rimadyl or any tramadol, I'm opting to let him rest. I did try to give him a back rub: I clearly hit some tender spots and muscle spasms! But, Jackson isn't a touchy-feely kinda guy AND the fact that it was on tender areas, I wasn't able to massage much. I'm pretty sure my efforts failed. I know he had an awesome weekend and I wouldn't have changed anything....but now he's mopey, tired, and achy. I presume I should just let him be and not bother him too much. What do you think? Sigh.

Sounds like Jackson is worn out from waaaaay to much fun---and that's a good thing!! Haven't you had to have a few days to recuperate after a whirlwind vacation? He's just enjoying the serenity of being home. Sounds perfectly normal reaction from a week of "Tripawd Fine Wild"!
Sending you continued happiness, Sally and Happy Hannah
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
