Hi, just introducing Bandit, a merle collie lurcher who had his left rear leg amputated 21st August.
You can see him with his pals here (I hope)

Wow! What a jumper! He is gorgeous, thank you for joining us and sharing his video. How did he lose his leg? Are you in the UK? That's generally where our Lurcher friends tend to live.
We're so glad you're here. Your future posts won't require moderation.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes we're in the UK - Wales to be precise. Bandit was diagnosed with a sarcoma first week in August; our vet did an x-ray thought it was osteo and recommended euthanasia. Bandit was so fit and active we couldn't accept that and had him referred to oncology specialist vets a. There is no evidence of osteosarcoma, although his tumour was very aggressive. We have decided not to have more tests as we don't want to put him through chemo (it would involve a lot of travelling to and fro and he is not happy away from home and his 'pack'). If he only has a few months we'd like them to be fit and active ones

Wales eh? Welcome!
Oh my gosh from an osteo diagnosis and euthanasia recommendation to another diagnosis and life as a Tripawd? What a whirlwhind! I'm so glad you didn't take no for an answer. Did the most recent diagnosis get any more specific?
Chemo isn't right for everyone, I didn't have it either mostly due to the traveling involved for us (six hours each way!).But I went on to beat the odds and lived two more glorious years! I really hope that Bandit does too.
Did you know we have a Tripawds UK group on Facebook? They're a lot of fun. Here are some flyers you can download to help spread the word so that more vets in your part of the world learn that life on three legs can be good!

Kudos to you for going with your gut instinct and giving Bandit a chance. It's because of the courage of people like you who go against convention that dogs can keep on showing humans how incredibly resilient they are. Thank you!

It was the information and stories on this site which gave us the confidence and knowledge to go ahead with the amputation and give Bandit the best chance. They could have done more tests on the tumour etc, but as we had already decided not to go the chemo route we thought it didn't really matter and we would take each day as it comes. thanks for the link, i will definitely drop a poster in to the vets. And a huge thank you to everyone on this site for their stories and the information

Welcome! You have such a wonderful attitude and a fighting spirit (which is NO less than bandit deserves). We had a similar experience - terrible prognosis (in fairness, we had a lung met and a spot on the liver at the time of diagnosis) but we decided to amputate anyway and we got ten awesome months with Zeus.
I wish you the best of luck!
Lisa
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Welcome Bandit and pack! Bandit certainly is full of life. How old is he? I like your attitude; now Bandit is a tripawd, pain free and enjoying the heck out of life, stick your head in the sand and enjoy him enjoying life. By the way, I love Wales; my father grew up in Builth Wells. Keep us posted on Bandit's progress.

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011
Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011. Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs. If love alone could have saved you…
Thanks all, not brave just refuse to be beaten (not very good at listening to people vets to be honest). Bandit's tumour was poorly-differentiated too, but we'll see what comes.
Catherine he's 8 and a half .

Welcome to you and Bandit! I hope you have a good long time together!
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
Welcome. As is often said on this site, it is always best to go with your heart and you have done exactly that. Every month after amputation is precious and worth so much more than before, mainly, I think, because us humans start being more dog!
Good luck and here's hoping you have many many months and hopefully years ahead of you.
Karen and Spirit Magnum
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
