We are feeling very, very thankful today. COVID-19 has presented challenges to a lot of veterinarians (and people in general) but today we were able to get a met check. Grover has been a bit slower lately and they felt that this warranted a check in ... and we are relieved, happy and thankful to report that he is still free of visible pulmonary metastases and his rib met has remained stable for 6 months. Likely he is just slowing down a bit between having his pre-existing orthopedic challenges, over 9 months on 3 legs and not being able to go to rehab in light of current events.

I included (I think?) a video of him goofing around with his favorite football. We are very thankful for this group and all of their encouragement.

(PS -  I realize that the video may make it look like he is resource guarding his toy, but I promise that was not actually the case)

Go go Groooooover! You look so terrific big boy! smiley_clap What a joy to see you prancing and pronking. I don't think you have a resource guarding bone in that big ol body of yours, you are such a sweetie.

Stable metastasis is as great as it gets when you're dealing with this kind of issue. You are ROCKIN it Grover!

We get strength and hope knowing that yes it IS possible to keep this disease from progressing, thank you for taking time to stop by. Czar's mom could really use the pawsitivity right now, he also has metastasis happening and we're all hoping it behaves.

Meanwhile we all send lots and lots of love to Grover and you, he truly is a big giant miracle on 3 paws. sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2

That is such great news!

this is the first video In have seen of Grover. He is one handsome and happy pup!

Is He in the Shepard family???

Just asking, I know one day down the road I would like to have another big dog.

My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019.  With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer.  I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud!  He will live forever in my Heart!

Grover is having such fun!  Griffin used to have one of those squeaky footballs and loved it.  I can't wait until Griffin is ready to play with his toys again and in the meantime, I'll enjoy watching Grover's videos!

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

We jokingly call him a "lesser Dane" because he is small (95 lbs) and not exactly what a Great Dane enthusiast would call a great specimen of the breed (we got him from a rescue and of course don't care ourselves). His "small" size has been in our favor for this last chapter though!

I hope that Czar will have the same luck we have had - we are also on the Yale vaccine and Losartan. You never know if it's luck or something you're actually doing, but no matter what it is ... we will take it!

One more video of my husband and him playing. There's something about an old dog still playing with his toys that just melts my heart. So glad that with everyone's encouragement here we gave him a chance and for the support during the first few hard weeks - no matter what the future holds these have been 9 amazing months.

He looks soooo hoppy!! Watching him prance around for toys just made my day.

I agree that his small size is a huge advantage in this situation. He looks fantastic.

Thank you for sharing that video. It's great to see all the dogs doing great. Me and Ziva are just at the start of our journey and seeing this makes it much easier.

I wanted to share our 11 month met check update on Grover. I can't believe that it's been 11 months ... it seems like both yesterday and a lifetime ago. The support of all of you has been huge to get through the rough patches to here.

The good news from our met check is that based on radiographs he is still free of radiographic evidence of pulmonary disease. Additionally, is rib metastasis is largely unchanged. The less exciting finding was during an abdominal ultrasound to work up recurrent UTI's they found an unrelated abdominal mass. It is still small and they think attached to his colon. They tried to sample it with an FNA but the results were non-diagnostic. Given that he is currently asymptomatic the oncologist recommended waiting four weeks (as long has he continues to be happy) and then getting a CT of his chest and abdomen. If the mass is still there and he is still free of pulmonary metastases then we will consider abdominal surgery to resect it and remove it.

Overall though I take this to be good news - lung tumors are likely what will eventually the be end, so the longer they stay away the better.

Woooowwwwweeee Grover is a SUPER STAR! smiley10smiley_clap That is good news overall. The cancer is tamed, things are stable, and he and you are loving life. While we all wish to never have to engage with that awful disease, this really is as good as it gets at this point in time when it still exists. And for Gover that ain't so bad at all! I'm so happy to know that he's 11 months out. AMAZING!!!!

Sharing his story with us is such a huge help for others to see that even when things look iffy, even if a met pops up, or there's a weird image on an xray or whatever, it doesn't mean the end of the road. Not at all, if Grover will have any say about it!

I'm so hoppy for you. Got any pics or video? We want to see him!
