hello everyone ...i have a 10 yr old GSD named DODGER who had a lump on his left hind leg on the bottom part  for 4 yeARS...which went on

growing very slowing and one fine day it bursted  n the trouble began... he was sent in for a surgery to remove the remainders... surgery

went  well but the vet said tht thr were lot of tendrils wrapped around which she tried to remove as much but she was not sure whether she

could remove all... the wound started healin well... n within 3 weeks it was almost healed .. only a dot remained n then i realized sumthin

started popping ..n i waited but in two days time it became reasonably big... i rushed him to vet again  again n the vet saw n said it looks like a tumor

..meanwhile the biopsy reports came which declared it ws hemangiopericytoma.. i was sent to a senior vet who deals with cancer. he immd did

cryosurgery on it...freezingthe wound.. but after 4 days it grew more aggressively...afte tht another cryo n then more faster growth... at

every bandage change i cud see the  tumor was bigger...dodge's pain was growing day by day...he had started limping... n then thr was lot of

water retention in his paw ...finally the vet decided to amputate ...but on the surgery day he had some other plans... he said  dodge being

a GSD would   have weak hip bones.so we shuld conside getting prostethic done... so he guided us to contact orthopets ... he said find out

how much leg has to be chopped/retaind in order to get a prsthetic... the weekend had begun...we emailed to orthopets...n they replied after

3 days cos of time diff... dodge was suffering... his pain was growing.. his leg started to stink as it ws rotting..i sent pictures of his leg to orthopets n after looking at them

they  said they vl require hock n melioli(bones) to fit the prosthetic... but then they said its a borderline case. the tumor may come back.. his tumor is quite close to

the hock. he may not have clean margins. we told this to our vet. he said he vl try his best n pull clean skin n vl cover the hock. but we

were worried as most of the vets had suggested full amputation ..then he scheduled the surgery after a week... ooops ...why this delay? he

was travelling. that one week was hell for dodge n us. he was under tremendous pain. rushed him to another vet n he put him on fentayl

patches which kicked in after 12 hrs.

Finally the  amputation  day   -20th june.. he did the surgery n did a clean job.. We got him back in the evening..lots of whinin at

night... the days started passing by... all were full of pain. he didnt look happy.. then 5th day i saw water retention in his scortum.

rushed him to vet(diffrent dr) ..he chkd n said tht since dodge is nt neutered so he has lot of space in d scortum n cos of gravity water

has collected thr.  we were  sent back home n asked to monitor.. but it grew more... i was reading tripawds for 2 months but somehow cudnt manage

to register n post... finally that day i registered n chatted with jim n sent pic too.... he asked me to go to vet n get it drained.
i went in the  next day n asked if it can be drained. he said it vl b difficult and should be done under ultrasound guidane which was

available only once a week. he put him on diuretics... it started wrking . swelling has come down a bit. it is very slow n cos of the

weight it keeps pulling the skin so a part of the  insicion is not healing well...

while all this was going on , another problem came up. dodge   got a new hard lump on his face n its growing very fast. its been 7 days

since i noticed...it has become the size of table tennis ball... and for the last 4 days he has been coughing n gagging... today he is coughing more...Today we took him to vet again n he suspects hemangiopericytoma again..needle aspiration cannot be done cos its very hard..he has been scheduled for ultrasound and xray on tuesday..vet says how many more sugeries vl you make him undergo... (btw he has a history of lumps, one was on tail(removed), one was underhis eye(removed), one inside ear canal(removed)..  . this one is very firm n is attached to the tissues inside.. vet says even if we remove it vl grow back... he says now lets give him palliative cure n jus make his as comfortable as possible...

i love my dodge n i dont knw how to go about it... have we lost it?? pls share ur thoughts n suggestions ... i m not good at writing... but tried to put as much as i can.. sorry, about typos n errors ...n thanks for reading

i m sorry i missed telling a part.. on the day of his surgery ie 20th june when the vet looked at his tumor it had become huge n thats when he decided to amputate the entire leg ..he feared that it was melonoma.. he even said that hemangiopericytoma cannot be this aggresssive. but later the biopsy of his leg stated that it was hemangiopericytoma only...

So sorry that you and Dodger are in this situation. I'm glad he is medicated and hopefully comfortable. My dog's cancer and experience has been very different from yours, so I'm not sure that I have any great advice. But, you have to do what is best for Dodger and yourself. Good luck with everything and keep us posted.

hello everyone,

dodge had his xrays n ultrasound done and the results were not good... the radiologist told me that she saw swollen lymph nodes around his groin . she saw a 10 cm mass on his spleen. big nodule on one of the kidneys n lots of round nodules on lungs. and then she asked me the biopsy result. i told he had hemangippericytoma on teh leg. she was shocked . she said the biopsy results and teh tumor are not relavent to each other as pericytomas are not metasistic ..(we r d unluckiest ones )...but she said she is very sure that thr r malignant tumors inside.. she told me other possibility could be fungal infection as she has  seen this ind of case previously where the dog was thoughtto be having cancer but later theyy realised they were fungal infection spotts.

later spoke to the vet and he says now we cant do much as chemo doesnt work on hemangiopericytoma. surgically he is beyond repair..bt still they have put him on antifugal medication.

dodge has not been walking much for the last 3 days. at home also he doesnt change places much.... he is coughing n gagging, trying to spit sumthing out but nothin comes. he tries to sleep but wakes up with some  discomfort..

i still feel sumthing is wrong in diagonis... how can be thr so much of hamangiopercyomas in his entire body when it is nt suppose to spread..

can anyone pls help me to ustd wht is goin on . here the vets r nt able to tell much . pls sumone help... i want to make him comfortable ... i ustd  we may not be able to cure him.. but i want to help him.. anything i wud do.

currently i m nt giving any painkillers as he is not whining in pain... i feel he is very uncomfortable. wht can i give him so that he can have uniterrupted sleep...

pls any suggestions , advice ...help us pls...

I am so sorry.  That is definitely not the news anyone wants to hear.

Schedule a consult with your vet. Make sure you have the utmost confidence in his/her ability, and then trust they will lead you the right direction. Quality of life is key. The other given is that there is no time stamp on his butt - meaning we are all given the time we are given.  Treat each day as a special gift, and enjoy each moment with him.

Do some research and get him on a good food, and some good immunity supplements.  Do what you have to do to insure he is as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.  Sending all the good thoughts I can find to you and Dodger.

Oh poor Dodger, this is such a tough situation, my heart goes out to you, this is so unfair.

Dodger knows you are doing all you can do for him. Cancer is so unpredictable and terrible, and sometimes even the best doctors and all the money in the world can't keep it from taking over.

It sounds like he could be in pain based on what you described. Maybe right now what he needs is palliative care, meaning, pain killers that can help with the pain and lessen the coughing (when a dog coughs nonstop it can injure the lungs and make things worse) for whatever  amount of time he has left. Ask your vet what you can do to alleviate the discomfort as far as medicines go (in the U.S. we use painkillers like Tramadol and Fentanyl and cough medicines like Robitussin DM).

Sadly, at some point we all must make the heartbreaking decision to release our best friend from the pain of cancer. It is the hardest decision ever but one that is necessary in order to prevent additional suffering. The only thing that makes it bearable is knowing that their spirit never, ever leaves our side.

I'm so sorry. I wish I could offer more help. Please post anytime and let us know what's going on OK? {{{{hugs}}}}

I'm so sorry about Dodger.  This is so heartbreaking.

German Shepherds are so prone to cancer, particularly hemangiosarcoma.  I lost one at 8 years old to it.  It was sudden.

You have done so much for Dodger and you have given him an incredible life.  As sad and painful as it is to let go, I think your heart will lead you in the right direction for Dodger's sake.   Your love for him will guide you.

Please know we are here for you.

Hugs across the miles to you and to Dodger.
