Just a quick update on Buddy, his surgery was on Monday and he's still there.  The Dr just called and gave us good news, buddy is doing well, his appetite is back and he is standing and walking but not so balanced since he was still using his front paw pretty much for walking and holding it up when he was just standing.  He said Buddy is in GREAT spirits though giving everyone kisses and if they had food in thier hands he really gave kisses, but he is trying to figure it all out they wanted to keep him another night and then my husband will be gone most of the day tomorrow and the Dr said with Buddy's size (97lbs pre surgery) that he will feel better if we wait until Thursday to pick him up so I don't have to do it by myself!  We are sad as we miss him really bad But understand he is where he needs to be to get the help in getting his balance figured out.  We are just so glad that things are looking good for our Buddy.

If I can figure out how to upload a picture of him I will so everyone can see him before and then some afters!  Will keep you updated!  Feeling much better... buddy's parents  Smile

Sounds like Buddy is in good hands, no need to rush. Good things come to those who wait.

Here's instructions for embedding photos in forum posts. If you still need help, send us one or two and we'll gladly add them here for you.

We are so HOPPY to hear that Buddy is doing well...yeah! My other guy is Buddy, so I feel a connection 🙂

It is a huge relief when you get good news like that - the waiting while in surgery is HORRIBLE and I know you're anxious to get him home. Are you prepared to pick him up? Have you seen pictures of what he will look like? It was hard for me to see my baby hop to me, but i focused on his eyes and his tail and just hugged him until I think he was about to pop...told him how much I loved him. The first couple nights are difficult...the first one was really, really hard for us. We got no sleep and Zeus panted all night long, i started to get anxious and he panted more and I got more anxious...the cycle went on. IT GETS EASIER pretty quickly - they really do adjust in a very short period of time. Just remember that this was major surgery, he needs his rest and so do you...also, be aware that the pain medicine may make him pant a lot or be loopy or just not himself.

Last but not least, we are here for you to help you through this...Stay strong and wow - isn't it great he is coming home tomorrow? Laugh

We haven't seen him since we dropped him off on Monday but we both have done lots of research and seen lots of dog pictures right after surgery.  We just have to remember when we see him to do what you say and look him in the eyes with all smiles and show him how much he is loved and was missed.  I know it's going to be a tuff couple of weeks but we are prepared and ready as we can be.  His brother Blue is so sad and will be happy to have him home too!

Thanks again, I will post again soon and we are going to get some pictures on here thanks to Jerry for sending the instructions... Pick up is 10am tomorrow.. Yeah!!

Just wanted to let everyone know Buddy is home and resting.  He's such a trooper they sent us home with a harness that works great.  He came up the front steps to the house without even thinking about it.  He has been resting now and we did help him out in the backyard for a bit so he could do his business.  Just wanted to let everyone know things are looking good for our Buddy.. I will try and post this picture of before surgery but if it doesn't work I'll send to Jerry a before and after picture!

Did they give you a Ruff Wear harness ? We've always told people not to use the harness immediately after surgery on front leg amputees, in fear that the straps might disturb the incision, catch on the staples, or open stitches.

But if the vet says it's OK, we'd love to know. Congratulations, and thanks for sharing this wonderful update!

Jerry

The vet sent us home with what they call a harness but really it goes under his belly and then has straps that we hold up to give him so support.  They told us to use that for the first few weeks until he figures it all out.  We did purchase the Ruff wear this week but won't use until after they give us the ok.

Buddy is doing good just very restless.  He wags his tail when I walk to him and give him love.  We are so proud of him and can't wait until the healing process is over and he's back to himself.

Good to know. Others in the forums here have even suggested making your own sling from a reusable canvas grocery bag by just cutting down the two sides.

You may be surprised though and not need it at all. Thnaks for the update!

What a beautiful ol' pup that Buddy is! Not sure why the photos didn't display properly at first. I went in to confirm they were embedded correctly, and they were ... darn gremlins!

So glad to hear Buddy is doing so well.  It's funny you mentioned Buddy wanting to be outside in the frigid cold.  Trouble has really enjoyed being outside in the sun resting since her surgery.  We make a point to take her out to enjoy the outside a few times a day in addition to her potty breaks.
