Aww, thanks! We were so thankful to have FB to keep our family (spread out all over) and friends updated on our guy. Barley is doing so well at home. Honestly he personally feels better off because the left leg was not of use to him (we won't tell him that the surgery we had done 6/1 actually DID make it so it touched the ground, so if that darn DVT, then MRSA hadn't struck he'd be hopping on two legs instead of one).

He is on two legs 90% of the time, but does a lot better using the 3rd when he's outside in a boot. We are hoping once he gets a better foot solution he will be encouraged to put it down more. I mean, the poor dude has no paw pads and only 1.5 toes on his one rear leg.

He teaches us life lessons every day- I can sit here and cry for everything he's gone through, for the guilt I can feel, if I let myself, as to why we chose the initial surgery for him, etc. etc. etc. BUT then I look at him and I know that if he's happy, I'm happy. Plus, I am at peace with our choices because they came solely from a wish to give him an improved quality of life. He's certainly better off than if we'd never done any of the surgeries at all (hello, constant bone pain is no way to live), and he's no worse off in the end than he was prior to this last one that went all wrong.

He's Barley the Brave!

Hi Michelle & Barley!
Barley, welcome home. You must be so happy to have him back!

I thought I could give a couple of suggestions for dog boots.

Prior to amputation my dog Schlomo had his paw pads removed on his front right leg and I got a customized boot from Thera Paw that worked out really well for him. They even changed closure to a top closure instead of pull on, which was too painful for him, and they added extra sherling lining to cushion his paw. It was great. You would send them an email about his condition and then they ask for measurements and a video so they can see his gait. They really care.

There is also handicapped pets and their splints are really good. Schlomo has a hard time adjusting to splints so the boot was better for him but you can even combine these with a boot for better support.

I hope these help.

Enjoy Barley! heart

Mascha & Schlomo,

I wanted to send a huge THANK YOU for letting us know about therapaw. I reached out to them, they asked for videos and photos of Barley's gait and his poor deformed foot. They made a recommendation for a custom boot and hock support, and lucky us, our local PT that we've been working with has a long standing relationship with them! Last night we went to our PT for a post-amputation followup and eval, and they agreed that the Therapaw recommendation is better for him vs. any type of custom orthotic/prosthetic/brace, because he does not really bear weight on his back limb and fear is that it would just be too cumbersome. I won't lie, we breathed a huge sigh of relief, because my understanding is that the custom-casted orthotics/braces can go into the $$$$ range. Even though it's a drop in the bucket vs. our vet bills, every little bit helps. We would have done whatever the vet said was best, but how often is the best choice ALSO the least expensive? Thank you again and we'll post a photo of Mr. Barley with his new boot once it's in. We are so happy to be moving forward.
