In the spring of 2010 in Asheville, NC, Ashanti, our red-nosed pit bull then 8, developed a lump on her right ankle which we weren't too concerned about (she'd had her annual check up the month before) until it got larger, and she began to limp.  Our vet performed two inconclusive punch biopsies and referred us to a surgeon for a third. The surgeon sent us to an oncologist instead for an ultrasound-guided aspirant which confirmed the osteosarcoma suspicions. We left her with our vet at 8 AM that morning, and Ashanti hobbled out on leash at 5 that afternoon! Our vet walked outside with us to assist with lifting her into the car. Ashanti instead walked to the grass where she first squatted to pee then took two steps and pooped - both without a wobble! The vet said THAT was why he became a vet.  It was obvious then she hadn't been using the limb for some time (took 3 months to confirm cancer). 32 months later, she doesn't really go for walks anymore, but still loves to eat dog biscuits, play with her red ball, and chase whatever's in the yard. Ashanti's a celebrity at Redwood Animal Hospital and still loves Dr. Doug Elledge and the staff.

Ashanti....you are my hero.  You told that cancer straight where it can go.  This is amazing and will be such an inspiration to everyone that is just starting on their journey.  Wishing you many more years with Ashanti.

Wow!  Impressive!  Way to go!  Yes, please, we'd love to know her treatment protocol.

Keep it up, pretty girl!

~ Katy

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!
