Looks like I'm long overdue for an update. Since my last post Brick had another visit with the vet college to do another biopsy and CT scan. The biopsy proved inconclusive and the scan showed that the dark spot on his arm had grown a bit. We decided we were going to opt for the limb sparing procedure after much discussion seeing as he is such a high energy active older pup.

The strangest thing happening after his second biopsy though,....he stopped limping. We chalked it up to the meds he was on, but something in my heart was thinking otherwse. We started upping his daily walks back to the normal hour long time and he still wasn't limping after.

He was scheduled for his surgery last week, but it got postponed to Friday April 31 due to waiting on the rest of the parts needed for the limb spare surgery. He went in for his pre op check up yesterday for blood work etc. When we went to pick him up after work the surgeon said she had a pleasant surprise for us. They did another set of X-rays on his arm and it showed that the dark spot in his bone had started to disappear! She said there could be a couple reasons for this, but the most likely that it wasn't cancer after all, but possibly a bone cyst (very rare and uncommon, but she has personally seen it happen). After the second biopsy she believes the pressure inside could have been released and the bone is healing itself in that area. Time will tell, but as of now he is off his meds and walking fine. He's scheduled for another X-ray to recheck it in a month but in the mean time we are monitoring him. As a celebration of the great news we took him to the puppy park in his favorite mode of transportation....his VW bus! big-grin

Well it's been a little over 2 months since my last up date. It' been a very tough year for both us and Brick and what can be best described as a roller coaster ride. Since my last post everything seemed OK, and the following X-ray since the biopsy of his leg showed that the mass had shrunk a small amount. We were excited but still a bit guarded by the news. June seemed to be a good month for him , but then July came and things took a turn for the worse. We noticed his appetite diminished a lot which was highly unusual for him. We took him to our vet and she confirmed that there was something showing on the x-ray she did of his liver and spleen area. We were referred back to the U of S vet College where they have better equipment to see what was going on. They found that there was a mass on his spleen and surgery was necessary.

2 weeks ago he had the surgery to remove the tumour on his spleen which turned out to be hermangiosarcoma. There were lesions found on his liver and stomach which were biopsied also. He recovered quite quickly after the spleen surgery, but his leg started bothering him again. After this we decided to go with the palliative radiation on his leg to make him comfortable since we knew our time was limited with him and the limb saving was no longer an option, and we wanted to make the best of his remaining time. Unfortunately after his first radiation treatment he developed internal bleeding from one of the lesions on his liver. An ultrasound confirmed that in the 2 weeks since his spleen surgery the liver had become so diseased with cancer that there was nothing we could do. I'm extremely heart broken to report that we lost our baby boy on Wednesday July 15th at approx. 7:45 PM. I take comfort knowing that we were with him in his last hours and held him tight when he made the trip to the rainbow bridge.cryingWe are both gutted by the loss of him and have a huge empty space in our hearts and in our house. He was truly that once in a life time dog. RIP my sweet baby boy Brick, til we meet again.crying

May he always ride shotgun with us in his VW bus that he loved so much.

Ah this is so sad. You obviously did the best you could but it's much too soon. May you forever hold on to the wonderful memories of your beautiful Brick.

I am so very sorry to be reading this about your sweet Brick, please know you did all that was possible for him and your immense love for him was absolutely felt by him always, especially as you had to send him to the Bridge......I unfortunately know all too well the devastating heartbreak of this ugly cancer, my Tripawd angel Polly, lost her life to this crappy cancer, as well as my beloved black Lab Maggie just 2 years before Polly. There are several others here that had to battle this particular awful cancer so we definitely know what you are feeling. And we know about that once-in-a-lifetime dog as well.......

May time ease your terrible emptiness and grief, and eventually only happy memories remain within your heart; hopefully Brick will someday send you that special chosen new pup to share your life and love again.

I love that you have Brick's collar hanging from your rearview mirror, my Polly's collar and her Tripawds bandana have been on my rearview since the day I lost her 17 months ago......They both will never, ever be forgotten here.

Keeping you in my thoughts,

Bonnie, Angel Polly, Pearl, and Zuzu

Our hearts are breaking for you and with you. I'm so very, very sorry to hear Brick needed to head to the Bridge. Bit you gave him the best send off possible. He was surrounded by your love.

The disease is brutal snd unfair and makes it's own rules. But it CANNOT take away the eternal bond you and Brick had. It did not touch Brick's Spirit and did not invade his Soul. Brick got to be Brick right up until his crossover time.

You did EVERYTHING possible for your beloved Brick...everything possible. You gave him a life full of loving and spoiling and fun rides in his VW Bus to the dog park. And man oh man, I know these last few months he had more spoiling than a hundred dogs ever have in a lifetime!

You have had an incredibly intense couple of months. Your emotions have been run ragged. Your heart is broken snd the grief is suffocating. As unbearable as it seems, it even gets harder before it gets better.. The void hurts.

Through the fog of grief you will start to see a happy memory of Brick start to come shining through. Y o u have thousands and thousands of days of beautiful and joyful memories. Brick knows you'll be sad, but he really wants to see you smile when you think of him. The thing is, he's happy and free from pain and he wants you to know that.

I bet when Brick arrived at the Bridge there were dozens and dozens of vibrantly painted VW Buses full of all his new teammates waiting to go riding with him!

Stay connected. We understand like no others can. And we would love to hear more about Brick and see pictures! I just love his name BRICK!!

This feisty fighter has made quite an impression on our hearts! You can bet that everytime anyone here sees a VW Bus, we shal remember Brick and it will be with a smile.

Sending you so much kove tonight and holding you in our hearts..

I am sorry to hear of your loss. It is never easy.  But I agree that you did everything you could for Brick, and he knew it.  He wants you to remember the good times, and wants to bring a smile to your face when you think of him.  He is no longer in paid or struggling, he is running free and easy with many others that have gone before him.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and support. This is likely the hardest thing we have ever had to do. My parents were also with him in his final hours which I think comforted him also. With his last bit of energy he trotted over to my dad and gave him a wag (my dad and him had a special grandfather/grand dog bondsmiley)  My father even cried at Brick's passing....this was the first and only time I have ever seen my dad cry in the 37 years of me being his son. He certainly touched the hearts of so many with his out going personality and larger than life smile. I hope I'm not rambling,...it just seems to help me cope by expressing my feelings this way.

This is how we will always remember our baby...happy and healthy with that huge smile.

Oh you guys I'm so sorry. I know this update had to be very difficult to write but we thank you for letting us know.

Hemangio is such a nasty cancer that happens so fast. It's clear you did all you could and gave Brick the best life any dog could ever want. What a lucky boy to have so many people who loved him right up until he got his wings.

What a sweet, happy photo. I put Brick's photos in our Angels picture gallery, his smile will shine brightly there for all time.

Lots and lots of hugs coming your way from all of us.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

brick you were not rambling, but even if you were to ramble, I say ramble on!!!  I would imagine that all of us here know the heartache of loss of a trusted champion and piece of our soul.  I love the picture, and that is how he wants to be remembered.  How can you look at that joy and not smile along?

Oh my goodness, not rambling at all. This is such a hard, hard, hard time. The grief will seem debilitating for awhile.
We are crying with you...and with Brick's Granddad.

It will be more and more comforting to know he was surrounded by people he loved and who loved him. He knew his life was being celebrated as he was packing up to head to the Bridge, in his own custom designed VW Bus...with vainity plates!

That picture of Brick...such a smile maker! And it really does capture so much of his personality...his gentleness...his contagious joy! Brick touched us all here. Just as privileged as you felt to have Brick in your lofe, he felt just as privileged to have you in his.

We would love to see more pictures...hint! We would also love to hear more about all the special things that Brick did to make you laugh, to make you smile, to make you say "Awwww",and to make you think he was absolutely THE cutest dog in the world!! The picture of him in his VW Bus is a pretty good example of that!!

Hang in there, go through this in yiur own way a d at your own pace. Grief never goes away completely, but it gets pushed further and further in the background as the happy memories rise to the forefront.

Sending lots of hugs to all
