Although Harley is not a Tripawd and most likely never will be, I do want to put his medical history (so to speak) out there because I know how helpful it was for me to follow the progress and updates in the forums and blogs.

Harley had been scheduled for an amp (5/29) for a recurring infiltrative lipoma only to have the surgery canceled because two masses were found in his chest cavity.  We followed up with a visit to his regular vet on 6/2 who patiently went over all this again with me and yesterday we went for a consult with an oncologist and I am copying in a part of her report.

RADIOGRAPHIC EVALUATION:

VD and lateral views of the thorax are available

The cardiac silhouette and pulmonary vessels are normal. There is a large soft tissue mass in the right caudal ventral lung lobe. There is an additional smaller mass like area with a possible central area of gas in the caudal subsegment of the left cranial lobe. There is a mild diffuse bronchial infiltrate.

Diagnostic impressions:

Two pulmonary mass like areas as described. These may represent metastatic disease (from the infiltrative lipoma or other neoplastic process ) or could be a primary neoplasia but could also be granuloma (fungal) or abscesses. Sampling would be required to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

At times, I still don't believe this happened.  Harley had a big fat tumor, not cancer (or so we thought).  He's tired and I am tired, but I can't leave a stone unturned for this dog so I plan to have the blood test for blasto and an ultrasound to see if there is a mass elsewhere in the abdominal area that has metastasized to the lungs and a FNA of chest masses if feasible.  The oncologist is also going to request the pathologist to take another look at the slide(s) from the previous surgery to see if there is a possibility that it could have been liposarcoma.

This group is a wealth of information so if anyone has any ideas or "what-if" scenarios please submit them.  Thanks!

Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/

Hi Kathy,

I don't have any scenarios to offer but I did want to say that even if Harley never becomes an official tripawd- you are officially part of our family here... once you start posting there is no escape!

Cancer sucks no matter how many legs you have- it sure helps to have a support group to help you through.

Keep us posted on how Harley (and you!) are doing.

I wish I had some good/promising "what ifs" for you. But we have lots of good wishes for you and Harley.

And, yes, Harley and you are definitely part of the family!

Keep us posted and we'll be sending out pawsitive thoughts for some good news,

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Yep, once you join Tripawds, you're a member for life, quad pawd or not!

You are a terrific advocate for him. Thank you for sharing his history here, you are so right, lots of people will find it helpful.

I don't have any "what if's" because you are doing so much for him, it doesn't get any more thorough than this. Nice work! I hope that some good news comes your way with this next round of evaluations.
