As some know, we lost our last greyhound in 2020.  We chose to love again and on 9/30/2020 Allen joined us.  His littermate Walton joined us on 2/14/2021.  They were born on 8/4 2017.

Today Allen and I are at a Bluepearl hospital to see an oncologist. He started limping the end of March and two days ago stopped putting weight on it.

I feel prepared as I can be but don't feel good about such a young dog getting osteo.  We still have no official diagnosis but a lesion was seen on xray.  I am good at reading these now and I didn't see it.  Nor did my vet.  The radiologist did and so did Dr Couto (one of the top greyhound vets in the world).

For those keeping track, this would be our fourth round with OSA if he has it and our fifth round with a leg tumor.  Tex had HSA in his left forelimb.

So when my friend Kris was looking for a new greyhound for me at her friend's kennel, I asked her to find me the largest greyhound she could fine.  Allen is a big fawn boy with amazing eyeliner.

Oh my dog Ingrid! I really, really hope you get some good news back today. Nobody should have to ever deal with cancer one time, much less multiple times! Please let us know what they say. We are keeping our paws crossed.

Everypawdy, be sure to check out Nixon's blog. Ingrid started it when her pup got osteosarcoma. She is a wonderfully talented writer!

While it's always good. to hear from you, aometi es it isn't  always under the vest "circumstances ".

First of all, gonna a send all the pawsitivty  energy in the world for a food outcome for your handsome Allen.  You ARE good at reading xrays and I'm hoping and hping and hoping your read is the right read.

I won't elaborate  any further  until you find out what's going on. Well, other than to say  Tex and Cookie and Will and Nixon. had better be  sending some good energy to Allen!   Is Blue Pearl doing further "diagnostics"?

Sending extra hugs to you and Rich

Thank you.  Allen was a Rockstar.... He couldn't handle his nerves, pooped all over himself, the beds, and still had pretty woman who just met him cuddle him, tell him how handsome he was, and clean him up. 😂

He did great though with all the tests.  The cytology just came back and it is inconclusive. So more xrays, the oncologists have asked for a consult with Dr Couto the greyhound expert from OSU, and maybe another FNA in a couple of weeks.  All xrays are clean except his tibia.

I will try to post the results later tonight.  My concern is that we have another HSA tumor in a limb.  He is already on turkey tail.

Thanks for updating us Ingrid.  I love that he jad someone who jist met him give him a cuddle and see the sweet Soul he is.  Ahe treated him with dignity  and care.  He clearly knows how to jump k to people's hearts.

Well, as it stands now, it seems nothing is conclusive, right?     To me, that always allows room for hoping for the best.  And goodness knows, you and Rich need to have a reprieve from dogs with "diseases" or "illnesses".  And just mauve Allen will be the one.

We're all keeping that pawsitive  energy  of your Tripawd family coming straight to Allen.

((((((Hugs)))))

And IF I understand  it right, Yunnan Baiyao amd Turkey Tail are two different types of "treatment', right?  Voth have had good results.

CLINICAL INFORMATION:
Aggressive bone lesion left distal tibia.
SOURCE:
Lytic lesion. 5 slides.
Microscopic Description:
The slides are examined thoroughly from end to end. They contain a
moderate to large amount of blood with occasional blood associated
leukocytes and platelet clumps embedded in a pale basophilic
background.
INTERPRETATION:
Low cellularity and hemodiluted sample, diagnosis open.
Comments:
The smears are non-diagnostic due to inadequate cellularity.
Considerations include a poorly exfoliating lesion or a lesion with
fibrosis. Inflammatory cells do not appear increased beyond that
expected for hemodilution seen. If clinically indicated, consider
re-aspiration or tissue biopsy with histopathology.
If you would like, you may resubmit a cytology from this site within
30 days of the original submission at a discounted price using test
code RCYTO. Please reference this accession number on the submission
form.

Sally, I appreciate all the hugs.  A lot.  sp_hearticon2

Yunnan Baiyao and Turkey Tail are different.  Yunnan Baiyao is a combination of Chinese Herbs.  Turkey Tail is a very common mushroom that is probably found in a backyard near you.  It is a great immune booster and has some interesting research behind it as well as a huge following in human cancer patients.

The thing about OSA - we really have only lost one dog from it.  You know I tied myself up in knots with Nixon doing 3 month xrays and he never developed lung mets.  26 months and no lung mets.  His liver gave out and everyone thought his cancer had spread but ultrasound and biopsy showed that no, he just had Cirrhosis.  His liver was the size of a really cripsy piece of bacon - the technical term from the vet.  Cookie died of Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis Polyneuropathy.  Both dogs were in double digits when they passed.  Our first greyhound, "She Who Must Be Obeyed" aka Miss Kitty was 14.5 when diagnosed with OSA.  Kitty had the most insane pathological fracture you have ever seen - her leg broke off of her body.  Like off of her body and just a tiny bit of tendon kept it attached.  I'm trying to remember if it broke above or below the hock.  Xrays showed masses in her lungs.  Those turned out to be 100% benign which upset the vets quite a bit.  But she had advancing dementia, advanced kidney disease, and 0 proprioception in her right hind - the remaining leg.  She had bad sleep incontinence to where she would absolutely dump her bladder out and a quart of urine was coating her and her dog bed.

Pro tip:  If you have an incontinent pup, the dog bed covers or the mature reusable pee pads from poochpads are amazing.  Pricey but amazing.  Second, the huge reusable kennel pads on Amazon also work really well but not quite as well as the pooch pads.

The one thing I do love about the family here is how much you help me live in the moment.  So we have a test that tells us nothing really...My boy  is still happy to go on walks, is playing with toys, eating well, and gives the best hugs.    We've got the kindest oncologist I have ever met (she really needs to come visit here because she needs to see pups who live well beyond averages), a compassionate researcher providing input, and the most amazing support group to get us through this.

JIm and Rene, Tripawds is an amazing community you've created and I'm so grateful for you and all that you have done and continue to do.

Ingrid thank you for the detailed update (and the kind words).

Aww Allen. I don't blame him for melting down. The vet team sounds so compassionate. Lucky dawg.

As I was reading through the path report I was like "uh, that doesn't say much," then I read your second post.

Sorry it's not definitive. We all want conclusive answers and when we don't get 'em it can be frustrating and worrisome. But your attitude is so perfect. You and Rich have been on this cancer journey enough times to know that nothing is ever for certain, and that our fur kids can and do surprise us all the time. You get an expert badge at learning how to Be More Dog !

Allen is still Allen, and he's taking things day by day. Just like we all should do!

It's true about how the regular x-rays can really stress us out as pet parents. Jim and I opted out of them for Jerry. When we found out he had mets, I kicked myself for a little while because we didn't do them on a regular basis. But in the end I was glad that we didn't, it allowed us to be free of the worry. We still did, but not as much I think.

Let us know when you hear back from Dr. Cuoto. Did you know that his daughter is now practicing? She's out here on the West Coast as the first oncologist in Bend, Oregon. That's a BIG deal! Finally, a great town has a great oncologist! Since we'll be spending summer in OR, I'm thinking we should go interview her for Tripawds News.

sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2sp_hearticon2Lots of love & hugs to all of you!!! Keep on keeping on and following your doggie's leads. You know how it's done.

I have not been around for a month because life has been tedious!   Finally got a diagnosis (maybe) on May 10.   Second FNA came back as a sarcoma but unsure of which one.  The tumor is now growing quite aggressively and poor Allen is not able to sleep from it even with pain meds.

I am exhausted having to follow up with all the vets involved who aren't doing what they said they would do and keep causing delay after delay.

The specialty hospital did finally do an emergency CT scan to see about doing SRST.  Bone destruction is over 50% so no go on that.  They are now leaning to OSA but still not 100%.

With the bone destruction, I thought they would move fast to amputate but I was wrong.  Even with his pain levels, weight loss, and risk of fracture I cannot get the surgical team to return my phone calls.  They at least gave him a vial of Zoledronic acid which helped with the pain.

Finally, my vet just cleared his schedule and is doing the amputation next Thursday.   He doesn't do amputations every week but he does enough a year on all dog sizes that he feels confident he can do this safely.

I will have to provide overnight nursing care and they will take him during the day if needed.

Now to figure out chemo.  With Allen's personality oral chemo may be a better option.

Do I need to stop his turkey tail before the amputation?

Oh my gosh Ingrid, I feel for you. Between the uncertain diagnosis and trying to get answers, you must be so exhausted. And even when you've got all the advocacy and vet care background that you have, that's saying something when you can't get calls returned.

It's madness right now in the vet industry. A member here tried to get their dog into the nearest ER for a severe looking ear issue that developed overnight (and this is a big city mind you), and they told her not to bother coming in unless it was critical. Another ER told her it would be at least a 6 hour wait.

I'm glad you got your regular vet to agree to proceed with the amp very soon. Allen must be in so much pain, poor guy. Just so sorry that you are even going down this road again. Ugh!

I can't specifically answer you about the turkey tail. My gut instinct would say yes to stop it at least 48 hours ahead, but I would ask Dr. Pam. Great question.

We are sending you lots of pawsitivity and strength. Keep us posted.

Cannot even imagine how frustrated  you must be trying to advocate  to get Allen the best care.  As Jerry said, with all your background and knowledge and someone like you can't get the support you need for Allen...grrrr.

I know Thursday can't come soon enough

I'm just so sorry you and Rich are having to deal with this piece of crap disease yet again.  I can only say from a "Universe " perspective, these dogs find a place in your heart and in your home because they will find love and care there.

Heck, as much acknowledge you have on amputations (regretably), you could probably assist your Vet in the surgery.

As always we will all be sending pawsitive energy to Allen and to you, for a smooth recovery.

Lots of love to yoi and Rich
