Yesterday I asked the oncologist again about limb sparing and complications. Dino's oncologist, in particular has done more limb sparing than anyone else in all of Germany. He is down to an average of 5-10% recurance on the limb. But as far as Dino's diet, there is so much conflicting information out there that it's truly confusing my wife and I. Red meat, no red meat, etc...

Hi, What a beautiful guy Dino is! My first dog Olga, a bullmastiff, got osteosarcoma in a front leg and went through a limb sparing operation. She also got Carboplatin intravenous. Everything went very well. She lived almost one year after the operation but died because of an accident, so I don't know how long she would have lived if that hadn't happened. My Penny got osteosarcoma in a rear leg and got amputated because the veterinarian said one can't do limb sparing with a rear leg. Penny also got Carboplatin and everything went very well for her too. She lived almost a year after the amputation. I know sometimes limb sparing is not going well, but you have to make a choice. I just wanted to share my story and hopefully it strengthens you in your situation. It seems you have a very competent veterinarian/oncologist for your dog. That's wonderful! I wish you all the best and sending hugs!

Thanks for the help. Yeah,Dino's oncologist, Dr Klaus Scharvogel, has done the most limb sparing in Germany. Still, my wife, our best friend and I still picked his brain for every little bit of information possible. He, along with the three of us had a change of opinion regarding the best course of action after seeing just how perfect for limb sparing Dino's arm is. Surgery and oncology wise, we feel 100% secure with the clinic. What is tearing our brains now is diet. Alternative meds I'm still working on. Right now it's exactly what barf diet would be best since at this point we are running into conflicting opinions regarding red meat. No conflicts on chicken/turkey. Here in Austria we have the benefit of mostly organic chicken grown less than 10 miles away. Personally, with this, grass fed cows raised within eyesight of our apartment, fluoride free water which comes from a glacier 4 miles away which kills me as to why I was so lazy to waste an amazing barf opportunity until a week ago :-( But anyway, we are now going full barf. But I'll be honest, tough to figure it all out at first. But even on red meat, which we are stopping food now, poops have been reduced by close to 50%. Mind blowing!

Gunillas, thank you SO MUCH for sharing Olga's story. If you ever want to write a guest blog post about your experience with limb sparing, we would be so grateful.

Meanwhile, it sure sounds like Dr. Scharvogel knows what he's doing. I tried searching for information about his work but couldn't find any English results (sorry, sad American here who only knows 1 language!). We would love the opportunity to interview him for an article here. If you ever remember to ask, would you let him know that we'd love to write about his work with limb sparing?

As for nutrition when fighting cancer, try not to let things overwhelm you. Take it one step at a time right now. When you're ready, we found that the Dog Cancer Survival Guide nutrition and diet information is awesome. Our Tripawds Nutrition blog has tons of good info too.

Oh Eduardo, we sent you an email thanking you for your generous support. Would you check to see if we got spammed? We would love to send Dino a "Tripawds Rule" bandanna, just need to verify your mailing address. Check your email for a note from us OK? Thanks!

Hey folks, I'm sorry I haven't been in here for a few days. Dino had his operation and is doing wonderful. He is scheduled for the first chemo next Thursday. The difficult part now is slowing him down since he still wants to jump and run like a puppy. Anyway, the oncologist decided to take out the ulna entirely since the tumor was a little larger than he expected. Right now he is doing fine on radius alone. I'll keep posting and pics come later. Thanks guys.

So glad to hear he's good!  Yeah, it's tough to keep our pups in recovery mode.  However, the fact that he's ready to tear it up is kudos to you and he for recovering so well!

~ Katy & Jackson

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hey folks. So far so good. Dino is limping a bit and its hard to keep him from running and trying to jump. But he does not complain about the limping at all. He is still on post surgery pain medication and antibiotics. Though I always think about how beneficial infections are in limb sparing with day and night longevity figures when compared to no infections. But anyway, Thursday we drive him over to Munich again for his first round of carboplatin. Let's hope it goes good. He is on two weeks of barf diet. Mostly chicken, turkey, salmon, and a rabbit here and there, vegetables, fish oil, cottage cheese, egg shells and turmeric.. Zero diarrhea so far and the most mind blowing thing is the downright drastic reduction in poop. Since my wife and I work at home its not hard work making 2014 the year of our Dino. We are hoping everything goes good with post operation recovery and chemo so we can get down to the business of taking Dino on a grand tour of Italian beaches. We hope we can make this one hell of a year for him. The next project for me is just what additional holistic items to feed him. I'm still researching it all.

Hey it's good to hear from you! I'm so happy that Dino is as feisty and spunky as ever. Keep him calm, as you're already trying to do, so that he can rest up. Some dogs are just a real challenge to mellow out during recovery but you're doing great.

Did I ask you this already? I can't remember, but what kind of pain meds is he on? Forgive me if you already mentioned it, it's late here and my brain is kaput :)

How does the oncologist feel about him being on a raw diet? I'd say that the majority of oncologists here would say No to raw diets while on chemo, although many Tripawd pawrents make their own decision to continue with raw (and the dog still does fine!). The biggest worry we've heard cited is that because of the weakened immune system the oncos think that raw puts a dog at risk for contracting salmonella, e-coli, etc. Any feedback from your oncos on that?

By the way, Dino's pics are ADORABLE! I love the close up, he's like "OK, enough you silly humans, can we get on with things?!"
