Our 13 year, 9 month old German Shepherd, Porsche fell 9 days ago and fractured her femur. X-Rays indicate bone cancer. We have amputation scheduled for Thu, Nov 13.

Family has been floored with the sad news, but Porsche is so full of life! Her appetite and other functions are good. We're using a towel to support her while she pees n poops, but will try the grocery bag.

This site has brought new hope to us that is having us lean heavily towards amputation versus euthanasia.

More to come...

Hi Porshe and family, welcome. I'm so sorry to hear about the diagnosis but really hoppy to hear she's doing so great. GSDs are pretty tough doggies, I have no doubt that she will bounce back and be the strong girl she has always been. If there is anything we can do to make your journey easier just bark at us, we're here for you.

Please share some photos when you can, we'd love to see her!

Bless your heart. I'll be keeping Porsche and you in my thoughts and prayers.

Also, I found this inexpensive "comfort lift" online. I ordered one for my Harmony but never got the chance to use it. When it arrived I inspected it and thought it looked great. I'm keeping it just in case there's a need in the future.

Here's the link if you'd like to check it out:

Looking forward to reading all about Porsche and her family!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

I'm sorry Porsche is dealing with a bone fracture and cancer.  This is a great community with LOTS of folks who have been where you are at.  There's a lot of support and advice here.

The first couple weeks of recovery will be rough.  There will be ups and downs but Porsche will figure out how to maneuver on 3 legs.  There are ebooks offered through this site (Three Legs and a Spare and Living Life on Three Legs) and I ordered them when my Leland underwent his amputation.  I found the books very helpful in preparing and understanding how best to help Leland when he came home.

Stay connected and we'll help you navigate this new journey.

I'll be keeping Porsche in my thoughts on 11/13 for a safe surgery!

Thinking of Porsche and all of you. Shooter was 13-1/2 at the time of his amp and adapted so well. They are amazing in their ability to go on.

Will watch for updates.

Update:

Today we meet with the surgeon and have chest, heart and left hind leg x-rays taken. After these are done, we will consult with the surgeon and make a decision to amputate tomorrow or euthenize her (if the cancer has spread to her lungs or left rear leg).

More to come.

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. I wanted to update you all.

Porsche had surgery on Thu, Nov 13 to remove her right rear leg. She made it through surgery with no issues. Friday, Nov 14 was a recovery day and she slept for most of the day and the staff kept opiates in her to cope with the pain. We visited her Friday afternoon and she perked up immediately when we visited. She also at this time had the space collar on, had a drain tube where her leg was, a drain tube in her nose, an IV and a catheter.

We came back and visited her today in the afternoon and she was MUH better. She sat up and the staff worked with her in a sling and she walked out of the vet hospital onto a grass area outside the hospital. We spent about 30 minutes with her and she loved it. She had lost the former leg drain tube and the tube in her nose. While we had her outside, she lost the space collar.

We then had the staff walk her back into the kennel. At that time. She ate a slice of bacon and a chocolate free cupcake.

We expect to get her home on Sunday (tomorrow).

So happy to read sweet Porsche did well with her surgery......now it will just be taking one day at a time to get her back on all 3 leg and feeling great again. She seems like she already has a head-start on that, though !!

Please keep us all updated on your girl, and her progress,

Bonnie & Angel Polly

I'm so glad to hear that Porsche is still with you and that her surgery went well.  I hope that by now she's has finally made it home so she can start the recovery process.  Just remember that the first couple of week will probably be rough with some ups and downs but that will pass and things will begin to even out.

Please keep us updated on how sweet Porsche is doing and let us know if you have any questions.  With so many of us that have already gone through this there's a lot of knowledge in this community.

HUGS to everyone!

Hoorrraaaay! So glad to hear things are looking good and she's kickin' butt. How did her return home go today?

I'm totally curious about the drain tube in her nose. What was it for?
