We also are trying to make a decision re amputation/treatment. Our shepherd is 12 and had FHO surgery on her right hind leg because of an injury before we rescued her. Now the left hind leg is cancerous. I only see pictures of front leg amputees.
Anyone with experience with hind leg amputees?
Hi and welcome, your future posts will not require moderation.
I hope you don't mind that I moved your post here so it didn't get lost in the other topic.
My pug Maggie was a rear amp due to mast cell cancer, she lived almost 4 years after her amp. Our current spokespup Wyatt Ray Dawg is also a rear amp due to abuse. There are many rear amp pups here. Conventional wisdom has it that rear amps get along better than front amps since dogs carry 60% or so of their weight on the front end, but I have lots of front amp friends that get along just fine!!
Tell us more about your girl....what's her name? What kind of cancer does she have?
Karen
Well I think I just lost my rather lengthy post,, but I'll begin again. Our girl Dicha has received one Zoledronate treatment as part of a clinical trial. She is responding well, but we need to decide about amputation. Sooner rather than later seems best. I would like to hear about others' experiences, especially during the post-surgery recovery phase.
Dicha, we're sorry we missed you earlier in the chat room . Please stop by again but next time scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see the chat box (you have to be logged in to participate).
Members will give you tons of feedback but in the meantime I encourage you to check out Jerry's Required Reading List and our ebook library to help put your fears at ease. As Karen said, we have LOTS of Tripawds here who are rear-leg amputees, all you have to do is dive into the Forums and the member blogs and you'll see. What would help us give you more specific insight is, tell us more about your pup. Is she an active dog? A couch potato? Does she have a strong spirit? And what kind of cancer do the docs think you're dealing with?
As for amputation after FHO, again, we've had lots of dogs in the same scenario. One of them, Tripawd Max, is profiled here.
Also, if you want a dog who will inspire you, check out Murphy Swindell's story. He had his FHO after becoming a Tripawd, which is a very difficult recovery but he did and is doing GREAT!
I hope this helps. If anything keep this in mind: German Shepherds are very resilient dogs who generally do very, very well after surgery. I'll bet Dicha is definitely one of them.
Thanks again for joining! Please help us help you with more information when you can.
