Hi I have an eleven year old shnauzzer cockapoo mix named Tiggy he has been diagnosed with a mast cell tumor the vet is giving us 3 options because it is right on his ankle joint 1) leave it 2) try and remove it and do a skin graft or 3) amputate.  I am just curious as to if anyone has an older dog that has had a rear leg amputated and how they coped.

Can't wait to see pictures of Tiggy! He sounds adorable!

You've definitely c l me to the roght place for support and information. Our Admin Guy has given you great links. I k n ow this is a scary time, but do your research, formulate a plan and move forward knowing that any decision .ade out of love for Tiggy is the right dec!

My beloved Happy Hannah (a so ewhat "fluffy" and "mature" Bull .Mastiff), nad a rear leg amp. due to osteosarco.a, and never missed a beat walking on three legs!
And when the vet first mentioned amputation I was shocked and said absolutely not! And then I did some research. And in her case with the osteo the lain would increase rapidly and become unbearable. And her zest for life and joyful state let me know I jad to move forward wkth the amp. She wanted more treats and tumm h rubs and wasn't about ready to throw jn the towel. BEST DECISION EVER!!

Shelby's mom will chime in, but Shelby was 13 when she had her amp and did great!

Amputation is .major surgery and it has risks. But as far as getting along on three legs, al.ost all dogs handles that with no lroble.s within the first 24 hrs. Recovery for two weeks is no picnic. Every dog is different..some recover much faster, some take a bit longer. But once recovery takes
Lace a d their sparkle co es back..WOW!!!

Stay connected here. Yoh are not alone! We u derstand like no others can!
