I've been so caught up with Meeko's recovery from his amputation surgery that I completely forgot to post up about the post-amputation biopsy results. There was some speculation that the first biopsy which showed chondrosarcoma may have been wrong and that what he has might have actually been osteosarcoma. Well come to find out, thank God, that the cancer is NOT osteo and it is chondrosarcoma. Both biopsies said chondro. Its still a cancer but soooo much better than osteo. The prognosis is a heck of a lot better. He could potentially live a full life!! What's even better is that we caught the cancer while it was still a grade 1/low level tumor. Chondrosarcoma metastasizes in less than 10% of dogs with low grade tumors and since the tumor was removed with the amp surgery we have high hopes for our boy!! :)

Our tripawd is Meeko. Four and a half year old male Leonberger. Certified therapy dog with his CGC. Diagnosed with grade 1 chondrosarcoma 9-16-12. Right rear leg amputated 10-1-12. We also had Casper who was an 8 year old Great Pyrenees diagnosed with osteosarcoma. We sent him to the Rainbow Bridge 10-29-11.

Where else could you possibly go and have people excited about a different type of cancer diagnosis?! The prognosis sounds really bright for Meeko.

So happy for you, but so sorry that you have to deal with cancer at all!

Our beautiful Lily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her front leg on 12/14/11 at age 8 and had amp on 12/16/11. She completed 5 rounds of carbo. She was so brave and kicked cancer's butt daily! She lived life fully for 4 years, 3 months, and 15 days after her amp. My angel is a warrior princess. I miss her so much.

Hooray for not being Osteo! Treats all around (grain free , of course!) to celebrate!

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

This is wonderful news, thank you for sharing.  It puts a smile on my face for you both.

-samdog's mom

Samdog was a 10 yr old Golden and retired SAR dog. We found a bone mass on 8/17/12, needle biopsy showed sarcoma 8/22/12, amputation on 8/23/12, post-amp biopsy confirmed osteosarcoma on 8/28/12. Sadly, we found lung mets on 11/27/12 and my Spirit Sam earned his wings on 12/2/12.

We didn't know where we were headed and we don't regret a single step along our path. It all happened too fast, but he left a legacy of love that we will always cherish. Good bye my heart.

Wonderful news. That is definitely a lottery win!

Karen and Spirit Magnum

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end.
