Hi Linda and Barkley....hope all is going well, please keep us updated. The first couple of weeks after surgery can be challenging, and scary and stressful, but each day will get a litte better. Stay positive and calm, Barkley will follow your lead. (When I needed to freak out, I made sure Nitro wasn't anywhere near me, then I returned to him all calm again). I saw your post on his fourm thread, so you know how well he's doing today. If you're interested in his story, our blog here is titled "Doberman's journey".

You're about to start what can be an incredible journey....tripawd dogs rock! Good luck

Paula and Nitro

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

THANK you all for all your input and wisdom and experience. Barkley is officially a TRIPAWD!  He is out of surgery now and coming out of anesthesia very slowly and on a concoction of pain meds that would probably put Keith Richards to shame. laughingway-cool His Doc said he was probably feeling pretty good right about now. They are keeping him overnight tonight and Friday night as they make the switchover from IV meds and injectibles to oral meds when he is ready. They said the surgery went very well and he seems to be doing very well too. I couldn't ask for a better phone call. They have a doctor on hand at the hospital overnight and he will be monitored throughout the night. No news is good news. They will update me in the morning.

They are supposed to send me a pic when he is more alert, but that may not be until tomorrow. He comes out of his grog pretty slowly from past experience. I love him so much! Ok, time for the CHOCOLATE and I'm adding some WINE. superstar Thank you all again. I will keep updates coming!!

Have a great night!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I just wanted to update again on my baby Barkley's amp. He is doing EXCELLENT so far and we couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome! He was kept at the hospital for 2 nights, and on the morning of day 3, we got a phone call from the vet saying he is ready to come home and that he was trying to escape from his kennel so they actually had to sadate him a little. That's my boy!! He is getting around really well, does not need help getting up and has a very healthy appetite. He wants to be active, but we have to wait a bit on that still. He is having normal movements already and is wagging his tail and so so happy when we have friends over to visit him. It's only 2 nights he has been home but has had a LOT of people come to see him and that made him sparkle and wag to no end. Our other pup, Sophie, is being very motherly and lays down outside his pen and makes sure he is ok.

His spirit is back already, and I know it will shine even more in the coming days and weeks. This absolutely was the BEST decision for him and his quality of life. The vets said he would rate about a 5 on the scale of 1-10 in good candidacy for this procedure, but I think they will have a different opinion when they see him at his first follow up.

I do have a question though, they were supposed to put a patch on him for pain meds when we picked him up to bring him home. WHere would that be? Is is visible? I don't see one anywhere.......

This place is the BEST place ever! kiss

I'm so happy that Barkley is making a strong recovery. Good Boy (except the bit about trying to break out of the kennel....). I can see that keeping him quiet during recovery might be a bit of a problem. But that is a good problem to have!

Ellie was a rear amp, and the patch was in the shaved area up near the spine. It was a clear bandage, a few inches square on each side. It was pretty obvious so if you don't see one I bet he doesn't have one.

Denise.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Wow, I guess they forgot to put that on? I will call them, although I think he is ok wihtout it at this point. The only thing we have to be cautious about is when we try to ice pack his area for swelling, it obviously hurts him, so the first few times he actually tried to bite (not to draw blood or anything, just out of reflex) my husband, but now he knows we are only trying to help and will let us do it even though he clearly hurts.
